Chronicle - 8 November 2019

8th November 2019 Highlights in this edition include: trips to Forest School; Action Day; Year 2 trip to Windsor Castle; Year 6 trip to Rugged Earth; Year 7 Residential; and a message from the Rugby World Cup England team!

Nursery News We used coloured rice to decorate our Rangoli pictures.

Pre-Nursery enjoyed exploring the coloured rice.

We enjoyed acting out the story of Rama and Sita.

We made Diva lamps.

We used the interactive whiteboard to produce our Mehndi designs.

We had fun on our autumn walk.

Junior News A busy week at Forest School!

Reception enjoyed a special treat at Forest School on November 5th! We had our own bonfire and roasted marshmallows and made popcorn. We learnt how to build up the fire safely and the three things it needs to stay lit. We also shared our knowledge on fire safety.

Year 1 loved learning all about the senses.

Year 2 also had a bonfire at Forest School, alongside a variety of other activities.

Junior News Year 2 Trip to Windsor Castle Year 2 had a brilliant day at Windsor Castle on Thursday 17th October. We enjoyed watching the changing of the guards ceremony and then, thanks to one of our parents who used to be in the Welsh guards, we were able to go into the guards’ room and try on the bear skin hats as well as hear from the guards about their role at Windsor Castle. We then took part in a workshop about ‘becoming a knight’, acting out many of the stages and jobs the knights in training had to do! After lunch, we walked around the state apartments and St George’s Chapel.

It was a wonderful day which brought our topic of ‘Castles’ to a fantastic finish!

Senior News Year 6 Trip to Rugged Earth

The skies cleared and the sun shone on Year 6’s trip to Rugged Earth on Friday 18th October. The three classes of 6EF, 6MC and 6RC enjoyed a busy day working in teams completing a range of team exercises including building shelters, lighting fires using flints and cooking their own sausages over a fire of logs. A great way to end our first half term together!

Senior News Year 7 Residential at Mill on the Brue

Whether it was getting the team across a river, rescuing a trapped caver from underground or guiding each other blindfolded round an assault course, the Year 7s rose to the challenge which their weekend away at Mill on the Brue presented to them. Whilst the weather added to the challenge on the Saturday, their tenacity and team work saw them through.

We were delighted with the outcome. The instructors were complimentary about the boys, their ability to solve problems and to work together as a team. Everyone gained from the weekend away, whether it was through developing greater self-belief, problem-solving, developing their listening skills, working as a team or understanding each other.

Senior News Action Day Congratulations to all the senior pupils who displayed their many talents at this year’s very memorable Action Day. Monies raised from this event will be donated to two worthy charities, CAFOD and MISSIO.

Concert for Guitar Pupils on 2nd December The senior guitar pupils of our excellent teacher, Mr Smith, will be invited to play in an informal concert in the Auditorium on Monday 2nd December at 5 p.m. All parents are very welcome to attend.

Year 4 coffee morning on Monday 4th November

Senior News Tylor House met in the chapel on Thursday for a pupil-led prayer meeting. Working together in our house groups, the pupils chose our hymn, prepared a bible reading and composed their own bidding prayers. We learnt about St Cuthbert, our house patron saint, and some pupils contributed to the meeting by producing some artwork.

Cookery club enjoyed making salmon and haddock fishcakes this week. They tasted delicious!

Sports News Football Football has continued either side of halfterm as we come towards the end of our football curriculum block. Across the school, we played Northcote Lodge, Parkside and KCJS. On Monday, our 1st XI played their Surrey Cup quarter final against Feltonfleet and on Wednesday our 1st XI, 2nd XI and 3rd XI played away against Danes Hill (see results on our sports portal, via the Cranmore website). The grand finale of our football season is the annual Henkes Shield which takes place tomorrow, hosted at Rokeby.

Hockey Our U8 girls’ hockey teams had a great fixture against City of London Freeman's before our break, whilst also participating this side of half-term in their regular joint lesson with St Teresa's.

Rugby World Cup Finally, we were very fortunate to have a video clip sent from two England players in the 2019 World Cup Squad. Jonathan Joseph and Joe Cokanasiga were able to give some insight into their World Cup experience, Japanese lifestyle and how they managed when the typhoon hit Japan. The rugby internationals were able to share some of their fondest memories of sport as they were growing up. They also passed on advice and emphasised the importance of playing a variety of and enjoying all sports.
