Cranmore Chronicle 17th May 2019 Editor: Mrs S Watkinson

Dear Parents This edition contains many news items for the Nursery, Juniors and Seniors. You can read about the Drama rehearsals which are in full swing, admire the super work produced in Art lessons, and learn all about the Awesome Book Awards. As ever, we feature sport too and I particularly wish to congratulate our fantastic Ski Squad on their remarkable results at the SATIPS Championships. Many pupils are looking forward to next week when we shall be making various recordings of our choirs and ensembles. This will be a wonderful opportunity to create a permanent record of their talents for years to come. Of course, I am sure many pupils are also practising hard for our very own Young Musician of the Year Competition which begins after the half-term break. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Water play in the garden was fun!

Role play: visiting the doctor’s surgery for a check up

We planted butternut squash in our vegetable patch.

In Science, the children looked closely at fruit and vegetables.

Our strawberry plants needed water to help them grow.

Juniors

Last Thursday, LP had their class assembly all about growing. They told everyone what they have learnt in Lower Prep this year and what they would like to be when they grow up. Congratulations, LP, on a wonderful performance!

UC enjoyed weeding the vegetable patch at forest school in order to plant the carrot seedlings which they are growing in the classroom.

1S planted several seeds: we are excited to see how they turn out and who can grow the largest sunflower!

Seniors

Changing Environments at Bushy Park The Fourth Form had a fascinating trip to Bushy Park on 13th May, learning about man’s impact on the environment and how to measure this, with the Field Studies Council. We learnt how to sample species using quadrats, measure noise pollution and observe the impact of trampling on plant ecology. The highlight was pond-dipping: we found many incredible nymphs, newts and other pond-life, whilst learning how to assess water quality. A brilliant day out was had by all in the sunshine and beautiful surroundings of the park.

Rehearsals for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory continue in earnest!

Third Form coffee morning on 9th May

We are delighted to announce that two of our pupils’ work has been accepted for the next stage of the Surrey Wildlife Art Competition. We are eagerly awaiting the results which will be announced next week.

One of our students completed this superb work of art this week. Mrs Darnton thinks that if this was printed onto silk and made into a summer dress or a tie, it would look amazing.

30 pupils from Cranmore read all 5 of the Awesome Book Awards shortlist. We celebrated this achievement on 13th May with a party in the Senior Library. 10 lucky pupils were also able to attend the ceremony on 2nd May.

The winning book was Being Miss Nobody by Tamsin Winter. Over 70 schools participated in the voting. At Cranmore, our winner was Brightstorm by Vashti Hardy, who will be visiting our school in September!

Sports Focus It gives me great pleasure to bring to your attention an outstanding performance from our Cranmore Ski Squad at the SATIPS Championships. Over 100 skiers from the South of England region competed at the event which was held at The Snow Centre, Hemel Hempstead. The competition ran across two age groups, U11s and U13s, and the format of the morning was both an individual and a team event. All 12 Cranmore children skied superbly, ultimately resulting in our U13s finishing second and our U11s finishing first in their respective age groups. A special mention to Grant Messinger who, despite being an U10 competitor, clocked the fastest overall time out of all 108 skiers on the day. The Ski Squad always performs exceptionally well in any competition the teams enter and a huge reason for this is the leadership and passion for the sport shown by our Head of Skiing, Mr Mellstrom. Whether it's the commitment to Ski Club and Ski Squad training on Monday evenings at Sandown or the endless hours of waxing and sharpening of skis, the dedication from Mr Mellstrom is clear to see and is evident in the results on the slopes.

Our Tennis Squads were in action throughout last week against Downsend, Shrewsbury House and Lanesborough School (see SOCS for results) and our U11 and U13 Golf Squad competed at the Charterhouse competition on Tuesday. Members of our Swim Squad participated in the South East Regional Finals in which we had qualified earlier in the year. Our U11s had a top 5 finish in the Freestyle Relay and a top 7 finish in the Medley Relay. Cricket fixtures have included matches against Downsend, Shrewsbury House and City of London Freemans. Congratulations to our 1st XI who are through to the semi-finals of the Surrey Cup after a ten-wicket win against Rokeby school. Mr Paul Hodgson, Director of Sport Director of Sport

***Young Musician Competition*** The heats of the Senior Department Cranmore Young Musician Competition will take place during class Music lessons immediately after half term. Pupils wishing to enter this competition should prepare a piece and then perform it during their Music lesson with myself. Those pupils wishing to enter the vocal class should be prepared to sing to Mrs Thornton at a lunchtime during that week. A sign-up sheet will be placed outside her room. There will be plenty of merits available to participating pupils and if the performances are particularly accomplished, those children will be also be invited to take part in the section finals later in the term. Good luck to all competitors.

Mr Harris, Director of Music

Congratulations to this young singer who performed in assembly on Monday. She sang ‘Maybe’ by Charnin and Strouse beautifully. Bravo!

Congratulations to this amazing young musician who passed Grade 8 saxophone with Distinction. A truly remarkable achievement for his age. Bravo!

Middle Prep had a fun afternoon trying out all the different instruments of the Orchestra. Any parents who would like their child to have a taster lesson on an orchestral instrument should contact Mrs Thornton before the end of term.

Congratulations to Arthur Brown who passed his Grade 1 drum exam with Merit.
