Plenty of action when the U10s played rugby against Danes Hill and St George’s on Saturday
Dear Parents Our rugby season got off to a wonderful start last weekend which bodes well for the weeks ahead. This edition has lots of news on sport, music and what has been happening in the Nursery. I am delighted that many pupils have engaged with the Awesome Book Awards, a passion for reading has always been a key feature of life at Cranmore. I am looking forward to our annual visit to the Church in Ockham on Sunday for the special service in which our Junior Chamber Choir performs. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Safeguarding and Child Protection at Cranmore As part of Anti-Bullying week, the Senior Department was lucky enough to see Robert Higgs deliver an excellent presentation on strategies to combat bullying. Robert Higgs comes with a wealth of experience. He is the author of two published books and eight plays on Bullying, and he has accumulated a decade of experience of working with schools, colleges, universities, local authorities and corporations throughout the UK. Robert has served as an AntiBullying Co-ordinator with responsibility to assist the implementation of 'AntiBullying Strategy' at Local Authority Level and he is a core member of ABA [The Anti-Bullying Alliance] The play was called ‘The Boy In the Photograph.’ In his presentation, the following areas were covered: What Bullying is and the difference between 'bullying' and 'banter.' How bullying manifests, including verbal, indirect, cyber & physical bullying. Practical Techniques for building self-esteem, confidence & resilience. Practical Techniques for tackling 'name calling', 'banter' or verbal bullying. Bystander behaviour & how to be a 'Defender' bystander and prevent bullying in school. Cyber Bullying & tips for managing online behaviour. What to do and where to find support if you are bullied or are bullying someone. For more information about Anti Bullying Week 2018 and advice for parents, you can access the following link https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/tools -information/advice-parents . We have also devised an Anti-Bullying handout which can be accessed on the VLE, under PSHE (Senior Department).

Awesome Book Awards We have been overwhelmed by the response to the Awesome Book Awards. Children across Forms 2-4 have begun reading and enjoying their first book – some even finished within a week! We look forward to seeing which book emerges as our favourite. Mrs Spooner

The Nursery engaged in new activities when they visited Forest School. They got out the ropes and made swings and climbing bridges, working together as a team and learning by trial and error. The children brought in gifts for the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal. We talked about how happy the children living in difficult circumstances would be when they received their Christmas gift.

The first full week of the new rugby season was very enjoyable as the children showed plenty of excitement and enthusiasm for the change of sport. On Wednesday, the U13 and U11 Rugby teams travelled to Worth School to participate in the host’s festival for the first year. Both age group competitions were made up of eight schools, with six in each having played rugby since the beginning of September. Despite this only being Cranmore's day three of the rugby season, both the U11 and U13s reached the final. This was certainly a fantastic achievement and bodes well for the rugby season ahead. On Thursday, the whole Form Two travelled to SGJS for matches A to F. Despite being the first year of tackling, all the children were applying the learning from their early training sessions with fantastic effort and perseverance.

U10s in good form last Saturday
Our cross country team performed very well at the Guildford District Trials at Charterhouse, whilst our squash squad won plenty of individual matches on Friday evening against CLFS, held at Cranmore. We had a great first Saturday morning of rugby, with our U10s A to E competing in a triangular with visiting teams Danes Hill and St. Georges. The second week of rugby includes our U11s competing at the Wellington Festival, U12 A and B against Thomas’s, Clapham and U9 A to F away at Cranleigh. On Saturday Cranmore hosts an U11 A to C triangular with Cranleigh and Trinity, and U10 A to C play Cranleigh away. Finally, on Thursday, six U8 teams are competing in their first rugby fixture this season against Cranleigh at Cranmore. For fixtures, team sheets and more information please use the sports portal via the Cranmore school website http://www.cranmoreprepsports.co.uk , or the very useful Cranmore sports web app and https://twitter.com/CranmoreSchool Mr Paul Hodgson
