The Second Form visited the pyramids, temples and tombs in VR to help them understand what it looks like, whilst they are recreating Tutankhamen's tomb in some architectural CAD software. Dear Parents Albeit a little bit early for the season, I know everyone who was there was thrilled with the LP & MP Nativity last Friday. Clearly, all the children enjoyed performing for a packed house. The Junior Chamber Choir was on top form at Ockham Church on Sunday. Not only was the singing superb but we were treated to a trumpet solo too. On Wednesday we were delighted to welcome Tamsin Greenway, a distinguished international Netball player, to run a masterclass at Cranmore. She proved to be truly inspirational for our young players. It is almost ten years since I watched the 3D movie Avatar at the cinema. It was regarded as a powerful example of cutting edge technology for its time. This week I had great fun trying out one of our new VR Headsets which were funded by the CPA. It is amazing how one can be immersed in a different world – underwater to outer space – from the comfort of an armchair. These devices offer a rich educational potential and one can only speculate what new technologies will shape education in the years ahead. Today we shall be welcoming Fr John to celebrate our special Mass for St Andrew’s Day. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Safeguarding and Child Protection at Cranmore The internet is an amazing resource which enables children and young people to connect, communicate and be creative in a number of different ways, on a range of devices. However, the internet is always changing and being able to keep up to date with your children’s use of technology can be a challenge. You may sometimes feel that your children have better technical skills than you do, however children and young people still need advice and protection when it comes to managing their lives online and using the internet positively and safety. Parents and carers play a key role in supporting children to learn about how to stay safe online, and they are one of the first people children turn to if things go wrong. We know it can be difficult to stay on top of the wide range of sites and devices that young people use, so we hope that the following online resources will help you support your child’s journey though the digital world. www.childnet-int.org A non-profit making organisation working directly with children, parents and teachers to ensure that the issues of online child protection and children’s safe and positive use of the internet are addressed. www.thinkuknow.co.uk The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre has set up its own educational website which has been designed and written specifically for children, young people, teachers, parents and carers. www.internetmatters.org This website contains lots of information about staying safe online, with tips about games, social networking, mobile technology and more www.kidsmart.org.uk Kidsmart is an award winning internet safety website for parents and those working with children. www.chatdanger.com This website is about the potential dangers with interactive services online like chat, IM, online games, email and on mobiles. It provides information, advice, true stories and games. The resource page also contains a number of links to other useful websites.

The 4 big internet providers in the UK (BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media) provide their customers with free parental controls which can be activated at any time. Information on parental controls offered by these providers can be found below: www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-centre/parents-and-carers/parental-controlsoffered-your-home-internet-provider With more and more children having their own mobile phone, it is also important to monitor what apps they are using and how they are using them. This is especially important, as these devices do not necessarily connect to your Wi-Fi to access the internet. Use the guide below to help you see what monitoring apps are available: https://www.internetmatters.org/advice/apps-guide/monitoring-apps-parentsguide/? gclid=CjwKCAiA0O7fBRASEiwAYI9QAr7yisq8ORmhfvswipap0C4oxS4tkK6jy2b jsz-dAGqSx0WQDnxSFRoC1gcQAvD_BwE

The second week of the rugby season included the U11s competing at the Wellington Festival, the U12 A & B playing against Thomas’s, Clapham and the U9 A to F competing away at Cranleigh. On Saturday, Cranmore hosted an U11 A to C triangular with Cranleigh and Trinity, and U10 A to C played Cranleigh away. On Thursday at Cranmore, we had the first U8’s rugby fixtures of the season versus Cranleigh, with a total of 12 matches taking place across the year group. There were plenty of tries scored and plenty of tagging, on this very enjoyable afternoon for the children. On Monday we had the U9s Danes Hill block fixture taking place with six teams competing (A to F), with three at home and three away. Finally, on Tuesday our squash squad competed at the Lancing College Tournament (U11 & U13). Despite some Cranmore children playing up a year group, the team showed excellent form and effort, resulting in the team reaching three finals. This week sees the U13 and U12 A & B heading to Cranleigh for a triangular to play Hurst/Cranleigh and Cranleigh/Aldro respectively. On Friday, the U9 A and B are competing in the CLFS festival and are competing against Northcote Lodge the day after. Also on Saturday at Cranmore, the U11A,U12A and U13A are playing against Northcote Lodge and our 5th and 6th Form rowers are competing in the Burway Head of the River. This week is a very exciting one regarding netball, with England netball player Tamsin Greenway visiting the school on Wednesday to deliver a masterclass before the U8 A/B and U9 A/B teams play a match against Cranleigh on Thursday. Finally, many congratulations to our Cricket program that has been recognised in ‘The Cricketer Good Schools Guide’. Cranmore was honoured to be chosen as one of the top 50 Prep Schools in the country for Cricket by the Cricketer Magazine’s Good Schools Guide. The selection was based upon our provision of the sport, opportunities to represent the School in fixtures and our outstanding facilities. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the hard work and commitment from staff, pupils and parents. Well done, everyone!

Netball with Tamsin Greenway On Wednesday 28 November, Upper Prep to Form Two took part in a netball coaching session run by Tamsin Greenway, who has played netball for England and is a successful coach / player, previously with Surrey Storm and more recently Wasps, winning the last four netball super–leagues as a player / coach. The children all had an enjoyable time, working on different areas of the game, movement, footwork, passing and shooting, finishing with a small game. There was plenty of enthusiasm and teamwork from across the year groups. Well done everyone and thank you to Tamsin! th

News from the Nursery Last Thursday as part of our Night-time theme we held our annual Pyjama Day! All the children came in dressed in their favourite pyjamas and so did the staff! Activities included eating porridge and reading lots of bedtime stories under the duvet. Pyjama Day coincided with the first really ‘sparkly wintry weather day’ so the Pre-Nursery went out to explore the frost first-hand, enjoying the sparkly patterns left by ‘Jack Frost’. They enjoyed their cups of hot chocolate in the cabin on the field. Nursery children went out into the garden and discovered that the Mud Kitchen had in fact become an Ice Kitchen overnight! The children are currently very busy preparing for our Christmas Singalong. We are looking forward to welcoming all our families and friends for this special celebration on Tuesday December 4th at 9.15am. After singing to families and friends the children have been invited to sing again at Lime Grove Home for the Elderly on Thursday December 6th and we are delighted to be able to take the Nursery children out on the minibus to bring Christmas cheer to our elderly neighbours. Our Toddler Group Christmas Party takes place on Friday December 7th between 2 and 3.15pm. If you have younger children do come and join in the fun. There is no charge and refreshments are provided.

Two Third Formers – Ronan and Charlie from 3J – have been delighted to receive letters from well-known authors. The children had written to them as part of an English homework set during Book Week in October. Ronan had a response from Christopher Paolini in Maine, U.S.A. and Charlie was sent a letter by British writer, Tom Palmer. Both authors thanked them for writing and urged them to carry on reading. Congratulations to Ronan and Charlie!

VIKINGS IN SURREY! The Viking Invasion seems to be an annual occurrence and this year was no exception. The Vikings blew into Cranmore port last Thursday, armed to the teeth and ready for anything. The day was spent handling ancient Viking artefacts, retelling the saga of Ragnarok and practising the Viking battle charge. This year there was even a Viking Parliament and the children used the old Viking methods to vote for a new leader. The spear-wrestling competition, hotly contested between the two teams, was also a great favourite. As always it was a wonderful day full of fun and learning.
