Dear Parents The LP & MP Nativity was absolutely marvellous yesterday and a real sign that Christmas is coming rather than the commercial pressure of Black Friday. This edition has news of the Bright Stars Pyjamas Day, Middle Prep visit to Hampton Court, Form One Viking experience, our Cross Country squad’s performance at Charterhouse, and numerous successes at the Woking Festival. There is also an interesting update from Mrs Broadbelt regarding the Ghana Appeal. I am looking forward to Sunday when our Junior Chamber Choir will perform at All Saints’ Church, Ockham. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Ghana appeal Dear Parents, I just wanted to write a note to say a huge Thank You to each and everyone of you, who donated to the Ghana Appeal. It was a tremendous success as there were over 85 bags/boxes of donations collected - so thank you all so much! The pictures show all your donations stacked up, ready to be loaded into the container which will be heading for Ghana. This will be achieved as soon as they have raised the funds to pay the £1,500 for the container. You will be kept updated on each step of the journey. So, hopefully, very soon I will be able to send you pictures of Cranmore’s donations being loaded into the container. Then pictures of the final step of the journey, when they finally arrive in Ghana and all your donations being personally handed out to the children there. All your contributions will make such a difference to their lives. Many thanks once again for your wonderful support for this project! Louise Broadbelt

Cross Country at Charterhouse On Thursday 9th November, Cranmore's Cross Country team went to Charterhouse for the annual district trials selection event. Over 100 runners lined up to tackle the challenging 4km course, with many slippery slopes and steep hills. Milo Roe managed to place 2nd in his age group and he was closely followed by George Williams, Morgan Cook, Thomas Agar, Charlie Williams and myself. As two age groups ran side by side, we are still awaiting confirmation of the individual results, but we are hopeful that Milo will have done enough to secure a place in the District team. I would like to say a massive thank you to Mr Heaver, for organising the team and taking us to this race – and also to Mr MacKinnon and Mr Worth for their support during training. We had a very exciting day last Wednesday when everyone came to Bright Stars wearing their pyjamas! This was part of our night-time theme, and also linked in very well with Nursery children learning the letter-sound P/p. The children brought in their favourite bedtime stories to read together under the duvet and enjoyed porridge as a mid-morning treat. Pre-Nursery children have an exciting new Space Station to play in which they have decorated with papier mache planets and stars. It is very sparkly! Nursery children continue to expand their knowledge of letters and numbers in fun ways, such as exploring shaving foam to see what is hiding beneath the foam. We have begun practising our Christmas songs and are looking forward to singing them to our families on Tuesday December 5th.

Beware of the Vikings! A strong northerly wind blew the longships much further south than usual and on Thorsday, sorry Thursday, a brave, fearsome group of Vikings invaded Form One. Led by Ingvar Silvertongue, the Vikings took part in quizzes and games from their culture and recounted some of their historic conquests and achievements. They practised their bloodcurdling battle charge in the playground, striking fear into the heart of many of the Seniors. They compared the different types of armour and discussed which weapons would be best for hunting or fighting. The day ended, as do most Viking days, with some exciting spear wrestling and a thrilling saga. When the Vikings left they took with them the spoils of the day, a replica Viking coin to treasure. Middle Prep Outing to Hampton Court
On Wednesday 15th November Middle Prep enjoyed an exciting day at Hampton Court Palace. We learnt a Tudor dance and looked at real Tudor artefacts, deciding if they belonged to the rich or the poor people. We then set off around the palace visiting the kitchens where meat was cooked on spits over the huge fireplaces. We learnt about rumours of a ghost who may walk down the whispering gallery. We played by the beautiful fountains and sat in the Great Hall where Henry VIII held his banquets and dances. We were told Henry VIII was out riding but we did meet Jane Seymour, his future wife, who was walking in the courtyard.

This year we have decided to take part in The Awesome Book Awards! Anyone aged under 10 in the 2nd or 3rd form can apply to be on our readers’ panel. The Awesome Book Awards is a prize that honours the best new fiction authors for young readers. If you want to take part by being on the readers’ panel, you will have to commit to reading the 5 short-listed books below by March 2018. https://www.awesomebookawards.com/
We will supply the books from the school library and we will meet as a group about once a month or so to discuss the books as we read them. Author interviews will be featured monthly on the Awesome Book Awards website and book reviews for the website can be sent in. In March 2018 we will choose our favourites and the voting online will take place, by a school representative on behalf of the pupils. 3rd May 2018 is the date for the Awards Ceremony at Cranleigh School. If you would like to apply to be on the readers’ panel, please contact Mrs Trumble.
