Dear Parents This edition has news of our tremendous success in rugby and an interesting article about our rowing squad. The 5th & 6th Form had a presentation from Eagle Radio this week on the appropriate use of social media, a topic which is rarely out of the national news. We hope they now have a better understanding of the key issues in order to avoid the pitfalls which are out there. I was in Liverpool last week in my capacity as Vice-Chairman of CISC – the professional association for Catholic Independent Schools. Our conference is always a wonderful gathering of Heads from all over the UK and some from overseas. We enjoyed listening to several distinguished speakers but a particular highlight was a short presentation by some pupils from St Vincent’s, a school for those with sensory impairment. In fact, most pupils are blind. It was very moving to hear their dreams of continuing their education, making new friends and having a career. One is conscious of the obstacles they face in comparison to the vast majority of their peers. However, their enthusiasm, hope and ambition shone through like a beacon. I look forward to seeing many of you at our special Mass next Tuesday and also at the Cranmore Live concert on Wednesday evening which is sure to be fantastic. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

RUGBY NEWS! A good start to the term was improved by some excellent results last week. The Under 10A and Under 9A were in action at the Shrewsbury House Festivals, losing only one game between them over the two days. Not to be outdone, all the other teams in the senior department took part in the Murray Cup, a new competition played over the week between Rokeby and Cranmore. After 15 matches, with over 350 pupils taking part, it concluded on Saturday morning with Cranmore victorious in the inaugural year. Well done to all involved and keep it up! Eagle Radio On Tuesday afternoon we welcomed Jack Johnson from Eagle Radio. Jack came to talk to our 5th & 6th form as part of our pastoral programme about the use of Social Media and the law. Jack introduced the topic and asked the children the five areas that they should not post about on social media. He then presented them with a variety of scenarios and for each, three different outcomes. In their groups they had to decide on the correct course of action and say why. Our older children proved to be quite knowledgeable about the use of social media and were in most cases able to recognise the right course of action. They were able to articulate their views very well and went away with a clearer appreciation of some of the mistakes to avoid when on-line. Thank you to our 5th & 6th form! Susan Walker

Pre-Nursery children have been continuing their wintry theme, with lots of lovely creative activities as well as stories to support their learning and fun in the igloo role-play area. This week the children have been finding out about the role of doctors and nurses, as well as paramedics and ambulances. They have dressed up in role and set up a waiting-room and surgery. They have discussed their ideas and shared non-fiction books together. Nursery children started their swimming sessions last Wednesday and really enjoyed their time in the water. This week they have begun French on Monday afternoons, meeting our French friend Pierre and learning to say “Bonjour”, “Au revoir” and “Je m’appelle …” What fun!

LB held a cake sale last week to raise funds for charity. No wonder they look proud of themselves! These cakes look delicious.

Nothing can dampen the spirits of the Cranmore Rowing Squad! The weather may have been cold, damp and dreary but the same could not be said of our rowing at the Weybridge Winter Head! The mixed quadruple scull of Arjan Kang, Jett Dyason, Ava Louisa Christensen, and Manasa Arun coxed by Jai Arun may have been the youngest crew in the event but they were determined to put up a good fight. The course was a long 3000 metres with a fast stream, so the crew needed to get off to a quick start, then settle into a steady race pace and build up a few bursts to keep the boat running. In the closing stages, with an older, bigger crew bearing down on them, they rose to the challenge and held them off to the finish. They were helped by Jai, who skilfully kept the boat in the centre of the river to make the most of the stream. Marcus Muir joined a composite Cranmore Danes Hill crew which had every sign of being a real challenger to the mixed crew. Unfortunately they suffered an equipment failure when a rigger came loose. They did not allow this to dishearten them and courageously completed the course. Everyone is now looking forward to the Hyne Cup in February when we hope to get everyone out racing. Mr B Martin
