Dear Parents We have enjoyed a busy programme this week despite the severe weather although we are closed today. I know that the visit to the Globe Theatre was a great success, if rather bizarre, with snow falling through the open roof. We are grateful to Fr. John for coming here yesterday so that we were able to celebrate Mass as planned. We hope our skiers have a wonderful time on their trip to Italy. Let us hope that the weather improves for next week. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

A number of pupils had an opportunity to swim at the Olympic Park at the Surrey Trials. This was a great day for all the swimmers taking part and gave them a taste of what it is like to line up at a 50m Olympic pool.

Much Ado About Nothing or A Winter’s Tale at the Globe Theatre? Watching actors perform Shakespeare’s comedy ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ through a veil of snow was the highlight of a memorable trip to the Globe Theatre in London for 5M, 5SM, 6D and 6M on Tuesday 27th February. Icy weather on the Thames precluded our eating outside and, instead, we enjoyed our lunches in the grandeur of the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. At two o’clock, suitably wrapped up, we sat to watch the play. It was a magical experience for the pupils and we were all impressed by the actors’ hardiness in saying their lines as the snow fell about them. My thanks go to Mrs Hopkins, Mrs Trumble and Mrs Walker for accompanying us on this special day out. Mr Chapman

Chaplaincy News As part of our charity outreach and through the Guildford Mukono School link programme, we have begun to form links with a Catholic School in Uganda. The school is called St Kizito and is located in the region of Mukono near the shores of Lake Victoria. We have read and replied to the letters that have been sent to us from the pupils of St Kizito. As we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary it seems a fitting time to form links with a particular school. It is hoped that such a link will enrich the curriculum of our pupils and give them a greater personal awareness of how, when we help others, we help ourselves too. The Seniors held their Lenten Fast Lunch on Friday 23rd February.

Kung Hee Fat Choi! We have really enjoyed celebrating the Year of the Dog here in Cranmore Nursery. We were very pleased to welcome Luyi and Emma’s Mummies in on Thursday. They spoke to the children about how they celebrate with their families and read a story to the children, before giving them a lucky red envelope and fortune cookie to take home. The role-play area was transformed into a Chinese Restaurant and looked very colourful indeed! Nursery children also made a dragon and lion and danced in the Gym to the sound of cymbals and drums.

Celebrating Chinese New Year
Lower Preps made impressive Dragon Masks to mark the Chinese New Year, and Form 2 and 3 enjoyed a fantastic Chinese workshop to celebrate the Year of the Dog. They prepared their own lanterns and were given some goodies to wish them luck for the New Year.

Le défilé de mode des CE2 Form 2 enjoyed creating their own French fashion show this week, inspired by the famous French designer, Jean-Paul Gaultier. ‘La collection d’été 2018’ was a great success and all the students made a tremendous effort presenting their creations in French.

Finding Out About World War Two The Upper Preps enjoyed two fascinating talks based upon their World War Two Topic. Mr MacKinnon presented an overview of the War, after which Mr. Hurst, grandfather of one of the Upper Prep children and a child evacuee himself, shared his memories of leaving his family home in the War. We are hugely grateful to both of them for taking the time to pass on their wide knowledge and experiences.

We have had a fun week in Science Club, with some nail-biting testing of our Knex Bridges – the tension was huge! The challenge to build a bridge which could span the science benches and withstand the most loading was a tie in the end between Fourth Formers James, Charlie and Josh, and Science Club newcomers William, Jonty and Harvey – all in Form 3. Both teams built brilliant designs, with the former building a multi-functioning creation that doubled up as a vehicle! We enjoyed seeing all the designs and the children’s creativity never ceases to impress. Form 3 have been learning about the Properties of Materials. Today’s lesson investigated the effects of heating – do the materials burn, melt or react in air?

Form Ones Visit to the Roald Dahl Museum The children had ‘stupendous’ and ‘whoopsy whiffling’ fun! They enjoyed finding out how Roald Dahl created characters from his adult life. Dressing up in different characters from his book was definitely a winner! The children were interested to see where Roald Dahl had lived and was buried; they appreciated the significance of the site and they behaved respectfully.
