We congratulate Mr Toby Heaver on being awarded his MSc in Learning and Teaching from St Anne’s College, University of Oxford. The photograph was taken inside the School of Divinity where Parliament sat in1625 and 1665—so this is another historic occasion!
Dear Parents We were fortunate to have such fine weather for our whole school photograph and we look forward to seeing the finished article. The gold hairbands and ties will certainly make it more distinctive this year. Some of our keen readers had a wonderful evening at the Awesome Book Awards, whilst UP enjoyed a super presentation from Mrs Elson about the importance of coral reef. We have another busy schedule of cricket matches tomorrow with several teams in action. I must congratulate the Cranmorians CC on winning their inaugural match last Sunday. Looking further ahead, please note the date for Picnic in the Paddock. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

The U8 Cricket A Team enjoyed playing Rokeby last Thursday afternoon in the sunshine.
Last Saturday C Clarke (3rd form) and O Angell (2nd form) took part in the Surrey Schools Regatta at Papercourt sailing club. C Clarke sailed in a Topper and received an Endeavour Award for taking part in his first regatta. O Angell sailed in an Oppie and came third in his sailing class.

Athletics at RGS On Tuesday 1st May our 5th and 6th form competed in the RGS invitational meet against RGS, Danes Hill and the American Community School. It was very early in the season but the boys were keen to get out there and performed very well. Both the year 7 and year 8 teams finished 2nd overall in their year groups to RGS. A great achievement! We had some notable results, with first places for M Cook - hurdles, W Harris - 100m, J O’Neill discus, M Roe - 800m. The 6th form relay team of M Cook, J Brown, J Harris and W Harris, after some wet weather training and an outdoor practice at lunchtime that day, ran really well to secure first place. We also had a number of 2nd and 3rd places and I was particularly impressed by the attitude of all the boys on the day. They were focused at their events and they should all be proud of their performances. Well done, everybody. Mrs Attree

Awesome Book Awards!
Last Thursday 14 very excited pupils from Cranmore, along with several hundred other bookworms, attended the ceremony to announce the winner of the Awesome Book Awards at Cranleigh School. They had all read the five shortlisted books as part of our Awesome Book Awards reading group—sadly there was only a limited number of tickets so not all the readers could attend. Dylan Lesser, a former Cranmore pupil who emigrated to New Zealand at Christmas, was given a special mention and a prize for completing the reading in his new country! Ross Welford, author of last year’s winning book, Time Travelling with a Hamster, introduced the proceedings. All the shortlisted authors (Christian O’Connell, Peter Bunzl, Lucy Strange, Lisa Thompson and Sylvia Bishop) gave a presentation about how and why they came to write their books and then the result of the votes of hundreds of children form schools in the area was revealed. The overall winner was Cogheart by Peter Bunzl, which had in fact been Cranmore’s favourite as well, although the voting was very close. Our pupils really enjoyed meeting the authors in the flesh and getting their books signed. It was a very inspiring evening and who knows, we may be producing some prizewinning writers of our own in the future! Mrs Trumble

Saving the Coral Reefs Mrs Elson, one of our parents, who is a reef ecologist, came in last week to talk to Upper Preps about her work on some Coral Reefs, the animals you might find there and how we can help to protect coral reefs. She also brought in a selection of corals for the children to look at. It was fantastic!

In Nursery and Pre-Nursery the children have lots of fun developing their fine and gross motor skills, both indoors and outdoors, through a number of varied activities each day. They enjoy regular visits to the Gym, where they develop coordination skills, balancing along the beams, jumping from a height and climbing on the bars. Children develop strength in their hands through playing with dough, pouring and scooping sand and water in preparation for holding pencils and writing. We are looking forward to the Painshill Firefighters coming in with their Fireengine on Thursday. Let’s hope they don’t get called out to an emergency!

Middle Preps have been learning so much at Forest School—recording where they found wild flowers, working together on planting and weeding, and using teamwork to build a den.
