2M and 2S were supporting the French entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Allez la France!

Dear Parents There is a broad range of items in this week’s edition describing recent activities. Our Nursery children enjoyed the special visit from Firefighters; we were delighted to welcome a small group of Missionaries who described the work they do overseas; we held our very own Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra; 6H enjoyed their working visit to Cherry Trees and Form 3 had a marvellous time at Fishbourne Palace.

Our cricketers played very well to retain the Phillips-Travers Trophy with some strong individual performances.

Please note there is a helpful message from the Second-Hand Shop.

Finally, we are looking forward to next Friday when we shall hold our whole school picnic for pupils in the afternoon.

Whole School Picnic Next Friday 25 May as half term approaches we will be having a WHOLE SCHOOL picnic as our 50th celebrations continue. The children in the Junior Department will enjoy a picnic lunch on the paddock prepared by our Catering Team and the older children will have their picnic on the Henderson Fields.

Form Teachers and Year Group Coordinators have been busy coming up with ideas for outdoor games to add to the fun.

Fingers crossed for a fine sunny afternoon!

A Young Pupil’s Guide to the Orchestra The Middle Prep pupils and parents were treated to a wonderful performance by our talented musicians in Senior Orchestra. I hope that the junior children were inspired by what they heard and may consider starting lessons on an orchestral instrument in the future. Any junior parent who is interested in their child starting lessons should contact Miss Fourie.

Young Firefighters!

The Nursery had an exciting day last Thursday when the Painshill Green Watch Firefighters visited and both Nursery and Pre-Nursery children had the opportunity to climb aboard the fire-engine, try on the helmets and squirt water with the hoses! The children all had a great time.

Meet the Missionary On Monday 14 May three missionaries spent the day at Cranmore. The missionaries had worked all over the world. Sister Azezet was originally from Eritrea and is presently a missionary in Palestine. Sister Natalia Gomes is presently living in London but has spent many years looking after people with leprosy and refugees in South Sudan. Father Christopher has been a missionary for many years in Mozambique. We also had Brigitte from Belfast who was thinking about becoming a missionary. We had a great day together.

Our missionaries took assembly and met a number of children in RE lessons and in lunch. We truly saw that Christ is indeed risen and He walks amongst us.

2nd Hand Shop Newsletter Summer Term 2018 Dear Parents, We have covered the position for someone to take care of all admin and accounts for the shop. This role will be filled by Suzanne Roberts for the next couple of years while her son goes into the 5th and 6th forms. You will be pleased to know that Carol and Louise are still there and you can greet their smiling faces every Friday as always….but they would like some extra company please!

Being part of the 2 Hand Shop is very rewarding. It’s a great way to meet fellow parents at the school. It’s a perfect opportunity to do your bit for Cranmore CPA and give a little of your time for great rewards.

This role is crying out for a couple of parents from the Prep years to come and join in. Grab a friend and come and see what it’s all about. Carol and Louise are experts on the requirements for the Seniors’ uniforms and together with a couple of Prep parents, all the needs and questions from customers can be answered easily. Of course, any and all help in the shop is welcomed, so wherever you are in the school, if you are interested in helping out, please get in touch.

Smaller sizes of uniform We are once again opening for two afternoons in June for the new starters in Lower preps through to Year 1. If you have your son or daughter’s old smaller uniform sitting at home waiting to come in, now is the perfect time. We need it by the first week back after half term ideally please, so that we can sell it on to parents looking for the smaller sizes. It’s always worth your while as 2/3rds of the selling price comes straight back to you when we write our commission cheques. Please check the Cranmore website/Parents/CPA/2 nd Hand Shop for a guide to how to sell your items and a link to labels that must be attached to each item you want to sell before bringing in please.

We are extremely low on stock of girls’ uniform items so this will definitely sell very quickly if you have any for us please.

Facebook Page The 2nd Hand Shop fb page continues to be a useful tool for keeping fellow parents up to date quickly on news from the shop. We have, in the past, successfully sold guitars and football boots through this page without them ever getting as far as the shop themselves.

The page is ‘secret’; a decision made to protect your privacy, so you cannot find it yourself even if you search. You need to be invited through a member of the group, either myself or another parent already a member. If you are on the page, please go through your friends list once again and add any parents not already on it, and if you would like to be added, please contact me and I will go through the process of adding you myself.

2018 Phillips-Travers Trophy Our annual cricket fixtures against Rokeby in which we compete for the Phillips -Travers Trophy took place in the variable weather of the first week of May. Thirty teams and over three hundred pupils participated in the matches. The week started well for Cranmore with the U.11 A team recording a victory based upon a fine run chase with James Fortescue making 87 not out. Any result was possible with the final ball of the U.11 B match. Unfortunately, a run out resulted in a frustrating loss for Cranmore by one run. Terrible conditions on the Wednesday meant that senior matches had to be cancelled.

On Thursday the U.8 A and B matches were won convincingly at Cranmore and the U.9 A’s won at Rokeby with a good team performance. Rokeby’s win in the U.9 B’s meant that going into the last day Cranmore were holding an eight points to four lead with six points still available. The U.10 matches were closely contested with the B team narrowly losing and taking the score to eight-six.

There was a tense finish to the A team match. Rokeby made every effort to bowl us out to achieve victory but Zac Hyner remained calm under pressure and showed great determination to secure the draw and the necessary point for Cranmore to retain the trophy.

This overall victory means Cranmore have now won six times compared to Rokeby’s five. Well done to everyone involved and let’s try to keep the winning records coming for the rest of the season.

Sixth Form Making a Difference Earlier this week 6H spent an afternoon at Cherry Trees participating in some community service work. They proved to be enthusiastic and extremely proficient at a number of gardening tasks.

Their efforts saved Cherry Trees over ÂŁ120 that otherwise would have been spent employing somebody to undertake the same tasks. Well done to our older pupils, who should be congratulated for their hard work and good team spirit. Mr Davey, Head of Care at Cherry Trees, commended them for their enthusiasm, their pleasant demeanour and their willingness to work together to complete all the tasks in record time.

My thanks also to Mr Jakubowski for accompanying us and Mr Lewis for driving us there.

Well done 6H, you certainly made a big difference! It was a pleasure to spend the time with you.

Third Form trip to Fishbourne Roman Palace On a pleasant early May day the 3rd Form visited Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex, the former home of one Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus – who else! We quickly split into two groups and soon mosaics, clothing, amphorae, wax tablets and other artefacts were being scrutinised and analysed. A few lucky ones even had the opportunity to don Roman clothing, and mightily impressive they looked. We also had the opportunity to walk around the villa gardens, looking at the vines and stretching out ‘Roman style’ in the outdoor ‘Triclinium’, or dining-room.

Apollo was obviously pleased with us and the sun continued to shine. We had lunch outside before paying a visit to the gift shop where the purchase of ‘Mood Rings’, swords and bows and arrows proved once again to be among the most popular items. It was then onto the coach and back to Cranmore after a successful trip; my thanks to all members of staff who accompanied Form 3 on the visit. Carpe Diem? I think the pupils certainly did!
