The Ones and Middle Preps took advantage of the sunshine to read together outside in the grounds. Dear Parents This edition has marvellous news of our skiers who have been very successful. There are also photos of the recent visit by Middle Prep to Painshill Park and Form 4 at Battle Abbey. Music is a big part of life at Cranmore and you can read about some recent performances. The children in Nursery were inspired by the Royal Wedding and the forthcoming marriage of Miss Roberts whose wedding takes place tomorrow. The whole school is ready for our picnic this afternoon which is sure to be great fun. Looking further ahead, please read the details inside about our use of the Royal Barge, the Gloriana. I wish you all a restful half-term. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Cranmore’s 50th Anniversary River Procession at Walton on Thames Sunday June 10th
We have been honoured with the loan of the Queen’s River Barge Gloriana to head our procession. Gloriana was presented to the Queen in 2012 for the Jubilee Celebration in London and is used by the Royal Family for formal occasions on the river. For Cranmore’s celebration Gloriana will be crewed by past members of Cranmore’s Rowing squad and she will be escorted by current and more recent members of the school’s club, rowing the school’s fleet of boats as well as the ‘Walton Monarch’ with parents and families of our current squad on board. All families of current pupils are warmly invited to join us for what should be a wonderful afternoon beside the river. 1.30pm – The clubhouse will be open and visitors will be able to see our facilities and perhaps enjoy a drink in the bar with its panoramic view of the Thames. 2.00pm – The procession departs. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate any more passengers on the boats but it is a pleasant riverside walk up to Cowey Sale where we will turn and come back to Walton. 3.00pm - Tea will be served in the clubhouse and Gloriana will be moored for families to visit. She is not open for public visiting. Our base at Walton Rowing Club is at the end of Sunbury Lane (KT12 2JA); parking may be difficult and you may prefer to park at the Excel Leisure Centre and walk the 400 metres up the towpath to the club.

Senior Department Sports Day 15th June Dear Parents Senior Department Sports day is coming up on Friday 15th June. Staff in the Sports Department, together with the House staff, have been sorting out teams to ensure all children are involved in the day. Final teams will be posted in the gym changing room by Monday 4th June and the timetable of events is in this edition of the Chronicle and also on the website. Printed programmes will be available on the day. All events will be held on the field behind the pavilion. Field events will start at 10.00 am except for the 6th form who will start at 9:30 am. Track events on the 15th June will start promptly at 2pm and events will conclude by 4.30pm. Children are expected to remain until the end of all the events and support their House. They will then be asked to return to their classrooms and collect their kit bags and uniform. Every child who is participating will need their House T shirt in addition to clean kit. Also a water bottle or drink, sun screen and a hat or waterproof depending on the weather forecast. If coming to watch the field events in the morning please be aware of throwing events and take care when crossing the field.
Please could I ask spectators with young children to keep them with you at all times to avoid any unnecessary accidents. Spectators may like to bring their own chairs or rugs. On this occasion children will be allowed to travel home in their sports kit. Please could I ask parents to check that their child has their school shoes with them when they leave school. There will be a short Late Class on Sports Day for children waiting for collection at 5pm. Should it be necessary to cancel the event due to inclement weather an announcement will be posted on the school web site, www.cranmoreprep.co.uk by 10am. The car park is always exceptionally busy on Sports Day. Please could I ask parents attending sports day NOT to double park or park in such a way that prevents another parent from getting out. Should you foresee any difficulties please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely, Susan Walker

Middle Prep Trip to Painshill Park On 22nd May the Middle Preps had a wonderful time at Painshill Park. We hid from the bears in the long grass and learnt how to build strong, cosy and waterproof dens. Some of us got rather wet when we tested them but we all learnt how to work as a team! It was a beautiful warm and sunny day and we sat out to have our picnics. Then we went pond dipping and tried to identify the creatures that we caught. We found tadpoles, snails, water boatmen , blood worms, swan mussels and pond skaters. It was a great day and we all had lots of fun.
Some of us were not so confident the den was waterproof so chose to take cover under a tarpaulin, just in case ...

Wedding fever has hit Nursery and Pre-Nursery! Not only was there the Royal Wedding on Saturday but we celebrated Miss Roberts’ forthcoming wedding here at Nursery last Thursday afternoon. The children came dressed in their wedding finery and during the course of the morning they made bowties and top hats, as well as head-dresses and jewellery. In the afternoon they sat outside in the garden, waiting patiently for the bride to arrive. Mrs Moule conducted the ceremony which included many bridesmaids and page-boys, a toast to the bride and cutting the cake. The children learnt a great deal about what happens at weddings, including specialised vocabulary such as confetti, bride and groom, veil and bouquet. They presented Miss Roberts with a special book of good wishes and a lovely present to remind her of the children in years to come. It was a wonderful afternoon and we wish Miss Roberts and her fiancÊ Joe an amazing day on Saturday and many happy years of marriage together. Congratulations to them both!

Music News
I am thrilled that we have a record number of pupils sitting a Theory of Music exam on Saturday 16 June. All pupils in Forms 2 and 3 have now received their practice papers and should complete one paper at a time in pencil and hand in to me for marking. I will be available in my room every Monday and Friday at 1.30pm prior to the exam day to help any children who maybe finding difficulty. Richard Harris, Director of Music
On Tuesday afternoon an incredible number of our Junior pupils performed in a piano concert. The children did themselves and their teachers proud and I would like to thank Mrs Geddes for organising such a lovely concert and for the encouragement and support of all the piano staff. It was a truly memorable afternoon for everybody involved. Miss I Fourie, Music Co-ordinator, Choirs

Cranmore Book Clubs for Pupils and Parents Building on the enthusiasm generated by the Awesome Book Awards, we have decided to start a Breakfast Book Club for pupils currently in the 2nd and 3rd forms, and any parents who would like to come along are very welcome too. We aim to meet at least once per half term, choose a book to read at home and then meet to discuss it. The day for the meeting will change each time so that early morning music groups etc are not affected by the club meetings. We had our first meeting last Friday, when we chose our first book, Time Travelling with a Hamster by Ross Welford (winning title of the Awesome Book Awards 2017). All are welcome to join, so get reading now and the date of the meeting for next half term will be published soon! We also have a Mums’ Book Group which meets two or three times a term, usually over coffee at 8.30 in the library, although we do occasionally have evening meetings. We have a lot of fun with a very varied choice of books and would love to have some new members. Our next book is Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi and we will meet to talk about it on Monday 18th June at 8.30. Do come along and meet us in the Senior Library. Sue Trumble

Form 4 Trip to Battle Abbey Battle Abbey and the scene of the famous Battle of Hastings in October 1066 was the destination for Form 4 last week. On arrival we were met by appropriately dressed ‘medieval’ Battle Abbey staff who, after an introductory talk on life around the time of the Battle of Hastings and events leading up to it, proceeded to arm the children with Saxon and Norman shields- a brave move! The children role-played with gusto and great enthusiasm but could not alter the result—it remained Normans 1-0 Saxons and one in the eye for poor Harold Godwineson! The tour of the battlefield and Abbey ruins went by in a flash but was most informative. We enjoyed our picnic lunch outside and there was just enough time to rush into the shop to buy the obligatory bow and arrow before the coaches arrived to take us back to Cranmore. A good day, and many thanks to all the members of staff who came along to help. Mr MacKinnon

Cranmore Ski Success Monday 14th May saw two U11 teams and one U14 team compete in the annual SATIPs Ski Competition in the snow dome at Hemel Hampstead, an event that Cranmore has always done well in, even though we struggle slightly with the artificial snow. For the first time the school could post two teams in the U11 event. After some very close racing on the deteriorating track, the A squad managed a Silver position with Grant Messinger setting the second fastest time of the day. In the U14 event it has always been difficult to beat the local teams who get to train on that slope but with an amazing 2-second -faster time than anybody else on the day, Ben AldridgeBate set the standard and the U14s brought home the Gold. On Sunday 20th May it was back up to Sandown for the now annual Eddy the Eagle dual slalom event, which Cranmore have dominated over the past 2 years. In the 10-and-under category the 3 teams smashed all in their qualifiers to make it an all Cranmore finals and secure all 3 medals. In the 12-and-under and 14-and-under, the competition proved much harder with entries from the local race team, of which many of the Cranmore squad are members. After all the racing was finished, both teams walked away with Silver, completing another fabulous day’s racing. Mr Mellstrom

An Exciting Win for Toluwa Toluwa played for his football training academy (PDA coaching) in the Surrey FA County Futsal Tournament on 21st April and qualified to represent Surrey as the County winners. They represented Surrey in Chichester on the 12th May in the regional FA Futsal Tournament and won in a very dramatic tournament to go on to represent England. They will be playing against the winners from other European countries in June.
