Dear Parents Congratulations to our young linguists who performed so well in the recent Junior Language Challenge. Our rowers had a great adventure visiting the Southampton Boat Show, more details inside. The children are very much looking forward to Book Week which will be held next week. Mrs Trumble has provided full details about this great celebration of literature.

I recently attended the National IAPS Conference for Heads which is always a wonderful opportunity to hear an eclectic mix of interesting speakers, from a former Head of Eton to Sports Presenter Gabby Logan. However, an underlying theme was the need to equip young people with the right toolkit to succeed in a rapidly changing society. In particular, although we often celebrate achievement, we need to foster positive character traits such as resilience too. This focus was also apparent in my recent update training as a school inspector – I shall be inspecting a school later this term. It is interesting to note that in the latest inspection model, the quality of education is measured by two strands: Academic (& other) Achievements and Pupils’ Personal Development. Whilst there are eight criteria for achievement e.g. numeracy, ICT and study skills, there are ten for Personal Development e.g. self-knowledge, decision-making, adaptability, self-discipline and perseverance.

It seems to me that the balance is correct for a 21st Century education in that we should give equal importance to a child’s holistic development as a person as we do to formal exams and assessment. Unfortunately, as many of you have heard me say, it is sad that children are under increasing pressure to pass the 11+ pre-test as most senior schools continue to place much greater emphasis on achievement than personal development.

Dear Parents, This year, as part of our on-going Pastoral Care programme and in response to feedback from you, we have arranged some presentations for parents. The first of these is next Thursday 6 October at 7.00pm in the Auditorium.

We have been very lucky in that we have managed to book two speakers who are specialists in talking to children and their parents about relationships and areas of concern facing our children today and us as parents. Our speakers will be talking to our 5th and 6th form pupils during the course of the afternoon.

I would like to strongly encourage parents with children in the 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Form to come along next Thursday to hear Alex Fryer and Amy ForbesRobertson speak. Should you have younger children you will also be most welcome.

Junior Language Challenge Semi-final Last week we hosted the Junior Language Challenge semi-final at Cranmore. It was a fierce competition where four of our students competed against the clock. They were tested on Korean, which they had learnt over the summer.

F Barklam, J Howes, J Inglis and H Williams all did extremely well. They were great ambassadors for Cranmore School. James managed to qualify for the final.

He has to learn Swahili for the grand final in London on Friday 14th October. Good luck, James!

Library News

Cranmore Book Week 3rd – 7th October During Cranmore Book Week, there will be lots of activities and competitions based on books. We won’t be having a dress as a book character day this time, but on Thursday 6th October (National Poetry Day) we will be welcoming a visiting poet, James Carter. Find out more at his website http://www.jamescarterpoet.co.uk/ James will be performing his poems to all the children from Lower Preps to 4 th Form (not 5th and 6th Form) and he will be running writing workshops with all the 3rd Formers. James will not be signing books on the day, but there will be an opportunity to buy his poetry books after the visit. I will send out an order form and he will return signed copies to us.

All through the week we will be holding a Book Fair in the Library Corridor. Parents are very welcome to come and browse from 3.30pm to 5.00pm each afternoon. We receive a fantastic commission from Travelling Books, of books worth 60% of the Book Fair takings and this enables us to update the Junior and Senior Library stock.

During the week most classes will have an opportunity to visit the Book Fair with their teacher. From Monday 3rd October, your child may come home with a ‘Book Wish’, which is a card with the title of a book he or she chose at the fair whilst browsing with the class. Please do not feel that you must buy this book; do come and check the books out for yourself at the after-school sessions.

If you cannot make it to the book fair, please do not send cash in with your child. If you would like to buy the book your child picked out, please send a cheque made payable to Cranmore School in an envelope, together with the ‘Book wish’ card, which will include name and form. Address the envelope to Mrs Trumble and the book will be sent via the form teacher. If a particular title proves especially popular and sells out quickly, we can order extra copies to arrive within a few days. These will then be delivered to your child’s classroom by the librarians.

The children enjoy choosing books for themselves at the Book Fair and we are always pleased to encourage them in their love of reading. Our last Book Fair was very well stocked and also raised a huge amount of commission in books for the Senior and Junior Libraries. Thank you very much for your support!

Books on stage On Saturday 1st October (tomorrow!) there is an opportunity to join number one bestselling author, national treasure and broadcaster Clare Balding at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, for an afternoon full of inspirational stories and family entertainment to mark the publication of her very first children's book The Racehorse Who Wouldn't Gallop.

The Dinosaur that Pooped a Show, Sunday 9 Oct, 2:30 - 3:30 at The Electric Theatre, Guildford, age 5+ Created from the bestselling The Dinosaur That Pooped picture book series, host Alastair Watson brings the books to life with help from The Dinosaur himself! An interactive, fun event that includes dinosaur impressions, live drawing, a Dinosaur rhyme and gross games like Guess Poo, it’s perfect for entertaining children ages 5+ Sunday 9 Oct, 16:30 - 17:30 The Electric Theatre, Guildford, age 8+ A must for all Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans and great family entertainment. Host Alastair Watson brings the books to life with fun activities including The Wimpy Kid Draw-Along and The Wimp Wars! Quiz. The event also includes exclusive clips of author Jeff Kinney talking about the books, his involvement in the films and showing how he draws the characters.

For a half-term treat, from Wednesday 13th October to Sunday 30 October, the Polka Children’s Theatre in Wimbledon is presenting a production of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. This looks like great fun and is suitable for ages 6+.

‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ is on at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking from 9 - 19 November.

The Polka Theatre Christmas production is always very good, and this year they are staging Dick King-Smith’s much-loved ‘Babe the Sheep-Pig’. (Please note that the 2nd Form will be going to see this as a year group outing in January.)

‘The Snow Queen’ is showing at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre from 17 - 24 December, suitable for ages 8+

Rowers learn new skills During a visit to the Southampton Boat Show, our 5th and 6th Form rowing squad learnt to kayak and also managed to enjoy stand-up paddle-boarding, courtesy of Rockley Watersports who run our summer watersport holiday in France.

It was not all hard work. We also had an exhilarating high speed ride down Southampton water on a rib, looked around a schooner from the 1920s and even saw the Tall Ships Challenger yacht which we are looking forward to sailing for a weekend next summer.
