Dear Parents I very much enjoyed meeting fellow Heads from all around the UK, and a few from overseas, at the IAPS Conference in Edinburgh last week. There was an eclectic mix of speakers and topics but one central theme was prevalent in all the discussions: the recognition that parents often make considerable sacrifices to give their children a high quality education. In turn, this places a duty on all schools to ensure that they are doing their very best to develop and nurture the children in their care. This edition highlights many of our recent activities and events. Form 1 enjoyed their football tournament and congratulations to our U10 squad who did so well to win their competition. It has been a very “musical week, not only with our remarkable Musicathon which finishes this morning, but our Wind Band performed at Charterhouse too. The photos show that Form 2 enjoyed their residential experience at Grosvenor House whilst Form 4 had a real adventure at Hindleap Warren. Our senior pupils enjoyed the French Drama, a comic farce, which was performed by a professional cast in the auditorium. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Last week at Forest School Lower Prep went searching for Autumn treasures. We found lots of different coloured leaves and made beautiful Autumn Crowns to wear.

Form One Football Matches Last Friday the WHOLE of Form One set off to Downsend for the U8 Football matches. Recently Downsend have been beating us in football matches but today was to prove different. Every child played was a member of one of 6 teams. The rain stopped just in time for the beginning of the matches. You could tell every team was determined to do well and with Mr O’Brien’s advice to pass more, tackle more and shoot more than Downsend ringing in our ears we began. Every child got fully involved. Half time scores looked promising but there was still work to do. Come the final whistle we discovered that out of 6 teams, 5 had won, one team coming back from a few goals down. We are so proud of the way our children showed perseverance and an excellent sporting spirit to reverse our fortunes against Downsend who are a tough opposition.

On Saturday two U8 teams played in the Cranmore Football Tournament. Mr Hudson’s team played 3 matches in the group stages, winning two and losing one and went through to the main competition semi-final where we lost to a very good performance from Downsend. Multiple saves from D. Powell in goal combined with diligent defending from E. Birtchnell made us very difficult to score against. Determined and dogged midfield play from F. Firth and A. Bull supported the creative and ruthless attacking play from J. Crisp and K. Mack. An excellent team performance in what proved to be a competition of a very high standard. Mr O’Brien’s team’s player of the day was B. Craigen. The team played with great spirit and endeavour in the group stages and made the plate semi-final, where the pupils saved their best game till last. With a great performance against a strong Cumnor House team in the semi finals, the team lost 0-2, but played so well. It was an exciting game! Special mention must go to Ollie McBride who turned up to support all his friends who were playing, epitomising the Cranmore sporting spirit!

This week we have all been finding out firsthand about Autumn. We are enjoying the variety of weather Autumn brings, from windy days to wet days to bright sunny days too! The children love to put on their waterproof clothing and welly boots and head outside. Last Friday we went out to see how many puddles we could find when the rain stopped. The children jumped and splashed and had a lot of fun! They are very busy every day sweeping and collecting leaves in the Bright Stars garden. Over in Forest School the children are finding out about different trees and Autumn fruits. We are looking forward to welcoming the children’s grandparents next Friday October 13th between 9.30 and 10.15am. We plan to bake some cakes for them and sing some of our favourite songs to them.

Music News
Members of the Cranmore Wind Band had a fabulous day at the Charterhouse Wind Band Day. Brushing up their sight-reading skills, they rehearsed in smaller groups during the afternoon and came together as a large band later in the day. Parents enjoyed, not only the music which was performed in the concert, but the rather nice Charterhouse cakes!

Mes Chers Voisins On Tuesday 26th September the 5th and 6th form watched a French play, 'Mes Chers Voisins' performed by the Onatti Theatre Company. We received a synopsis which told us that the play would be in French. Naturally that set alarm bells ringing in our heads but the description said the actors would speak slowly and use simple vocabulary. We arrived in the auditorium. There were 5 doors on the stage, suddenly a man and a woman burst out and gave us a warm greeting. The play was about 5 teenagers who live on the same street and their relationships with each other. One is a Justin Bieber superfan who is convinced Justin will marry her, another is trying too hard to woo Hugo who is the perfect teenager and Sam is trying to get a date with Marion. Even though it was in French it was still very funny and easy to understand. I especially liked the cheesy outfits, for example a neon suit and a pair of lime green trousers. Thank you to Ms Meneghin and Ms Schembri for this wonderful opportunity. Haris MacNicol, 5M

Form 4 Trip to Hindleap Warren The Fourth Form recently enjoyed a busy bonding day at Hindleap Warren outdoor activity centre in East Sussex. The focus this year was on communication and team building. Under clear autumnal skies, the children worked in groups of eleven to complete a variety of tasks and their ability to listen to each other’s ideas and organise themselves effectively improved noticeably during the course of the day!

Form 2 Trip to Grosvenor Hall As part of the welcome to the Seniors, Form 2 visited Grosvenor Hall in Ashford to make new friends, bond with classmates and get to know their teachers a bit better. We set off from school, stopping at Leeds Castle for a spot of lunch, a walk in the grounds and the famous maze as well as watching an interactive display about the castle’s use during WW2 and the Battle of Britain. Our appetites and minds filled, we set back off on the coach to our destination. The pupils and staff were all excited to be sleeping under canvas and after a tour of the grounds, we set off back to the tents to get ourselves organised. Over the course of the three days, we did archery, problem solving, abseiling, giant swing, the leap of faith, (nicknamed the leap of death by some) laser questing, orienteering and nightline. During the first evening, we all went for a swim and that evening, 50 tired children were all asleep and quiet in their tents by 9.30pm, the staff not too far behind! In the morning before breakfast was served we had a room inspection with plenty of merits up for grabs. Once the rooms were cleaned, Mr Morgan took the children on a light, gentle run whilst we worked out the winners from each tent. After breakfast, we were straight into the day’s activities where the pupils could earn merits for displaying courage, teamwork, kindness and really pushing themselves. A full day of activities ended in some wacky races at the Mini Olympics. Another quiet night followed and on the final day, after packing our bags and having breakfast, we headed off for our final few activities. After an early lunch we then jumped straight onto the coach to make our way back to school. When we arrived, children were met by some of the mums and dads with a big hug, happy for them to have returned. It was a great few days of team building and is a great way to say ‘Welcome Form 2 to the Seniors!’
