Dear Parents Congratulations to those pupils who have been elected by their peers to the school council. Our youngest pupils, the Pre-Nursery, had great fun recently when they became explorers and set off on foot armed with a pair of binoculars – super photos inside. You can read about a recent visit to the WW1 Battlefields by our senior pupils and Mr Martin is leading another group to Belgium again this weekend. We recently celebrated the European Day of Languages and this edition has a full report. Staying with this theme, the 5th and 6th Form enjoyed a drama by the Onatti Theatre Company – with audience participation – which was performed entirely in French. The ski club is in full swing again and this week’s report confirms that they have welcomed many new members. This is a wonderful way for children to learn to ski before they hit the snowy slopes. Please read an important letter from the second-hand shop and also the information on the CPA Fireworks Party. There is a busy programme next week with pupil photos on Monday, Junior Harvest Festival on Wednesday, Harvest Mass on Thursday and the traditional extravaganza of Action Day on Friday. Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Bright Stars News The children in Pre-Nursery enjoyed listening to the story of ‘Brown Bear’ and thinking about all the colours of the animals. We then made our own binoculars and went on an autumn walk around the school. We used our binoculars to look for different colours in our environment.

Cranmore heads for the trenches Nine 6th formers headed for the World War I battlefields to gain some insight into events some 100 years ago. The visit started in Ypres where we were moved by the Last Post ceremony and wreath laying at the Menim Gate. The following morning, we headed down to Vimy Ridge to visit the Canadian trenches and tunnels before heading to the French National Cemetery, where the memorial to over half a million soldiers has just been opened. Our final day was spent visiting Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth cemetery, and the nearby Langemark German cemetery where we learnt about the battles that raged in that area of Belgium. We also visited Sanctuary Wood where the trenches and tunnels have been preserved as they would have been during the war. The enormity of those battles really hit home and caused all our pupils to reflect on events. It was not all serious though. We enjoyed playing football on the Dunkirk beaches and the chocolate fountain at Le Crocodile restaurant was a big hit! Mr Martin

European Day of Languages 2016 On Monday 26 September, the Senior Department celebrated European Day of Languages. The day commenced with an assembly presented by 4S. In the assembly, we learnt about what the day involves, why it is celebrated and how language has evolved. We were taught about Neologisms and their place in society, how influential the languages of Klingon and Esperanto are and we even heard the Our Father prayer, spoken in 10 different languages. At lunchtime, we were treated to a variety of European foods from Ukranian Borscht (soup) to Italian meatballs in tomato sauce and it is safe to say, that we all enjoyed the English apple pie with cream! Onatti Theatre Company presents ‘Au Café’ Last Friday, double French was a different experience for us all as we were joined by the Onatti Theatre Company. They performed the play, Au Café, which was set in a café initially with two customers, myself and Daniel Cassidy, whilst the two main actors played a variety of roles. Later on in the play, other 5th and 6th form pupils played a part in the play which, at times, had us in stitches. The play was humourous, dramatic and all in French! I surprised myself as I understood far more than I expected and it was a very enjoyable way to practise French. Felix Wood, 5MF

Cranmore Ski Club Ski club has started with its usual mix of beginners and expert skiers. The squad has managed to get three teams into the national finals this weekend and we wish them all the best at Norwich. On Monday nights there are lots of new skiers on the nursery slope learning to snow plough and using the lift ready for the snow later in the year. On the main slope the lessons are progressing nicely as the children learn to parallel turn and already a number have moved into the race squad. The ski club is open to all children and siblings from Cranmore and takes place on a Monday evening at Sandown Park Ski Centre. Mr Mellstrom

Cranmore 2nd Hand Shop Newsletter Christmas term 2016 Dear fellow parents, For those of you new to Cranmore or those that just haven’t been to see us in the 2 nd Hand Shop… Welcome! We have some exciting news for all parents…. We are very pleased to say that the shop is well stocked at the moment. Come and check out our stock of winter coats, jumpers and beanies before the cold weather sets in, as only those that think ahead grab the best quality at amazing prices. Last Friday, we had a run on jumpers, so I we can’t guarantee stock for long! Don’t forget to bring your old small sizes in with you when you come in to get the next size up, as the smaller sizes are always the most popular and sell very quickly. You will receive 2/3rds of the final selling price and selling a good amount of uniform can prove very lucrative! ‘’What do you think it’s worth?!?!’’…SALE! Those of you that have been in lately will realised we have a small shoe problem! Our shoe racks have given up and there are shoes everywhere! We are on the case…..but it got us thinking. We currently have many donated items, both coming up to and past, their two year stint on the racks. Together with shoes, each Friday that it doesn’t rain (?!) we will be putting a rack outside and you may take items for a simple donation to the CPA, for whatever amount you feel is appropriate. We will continue to do this until we have moved as many as possible of the items that have not sold over the past two years and we will then donate the rest to Africa. It’s clear to us which items to put out and please be assured, if you have brought something to the shop to sell, this will not be used. Speaking of which…..Africa Once again we have a connection with an organisation and schools in Africa. This is brilliant news! Recently a few bags of the old non-current uniform were sent: rugby shirts, black and white shorts and white polo tops to name but a few. The shipment is only just now in the process of being taken over there and we look forward to passing on more of the details of the schools involved to you when we receive them. The Second Hand Uniform Shop is in the hut next to the new section of the car park. We open every Friday morning in term time and we are run and managed by a small but incredibly friendly team of fellow Cranmore mums. All profit goes directly to the CPA and is put back into the school for the benefit of our children. Further details about how to sell your items are available on the CPA section of the website.
Our opening times are 8-9am every Friday morning during term time. I am always available on my mobile, or via email, to assist however necessary. Many thanks to you all for your support from Lorraine and all the team. Mobile : 07711 261386 Email : lmoynihan@btopenworld.com
