Dear Parents Congratulations to our U13 football squad which has made it to the National Finals and to our skiers who have enjoyed great success too. Literature has been a strong theme recently. We welcomed a poet for our celebration of Poetry Day and I am grateful to the many parents who played an active part in supporting our Book Week. Our pupils in Bright Stars had a wonderful time in Forest School and Form 4 had their own adventure down at Hindleap Warren. This edition also has photos from the Battlefields tour and a report on the visit of our Wind Band to Charterhouse. Science has always been a popular subject at Cranmore and Forms 3 & 4 had a real treat with a wonderful Space Show recently. The Junior Department led a wonderful Harvest Festival on Wednesday and yesterday we celebrated our traditional Harvest Mass. Today we have a busy programme for Action Day when the pupils in the Senior Department have an opportunity to show off their talents in music and drama. I wish you and your family a most enjoyable half-term holiday.

Yours sincerely Michael Connolly

Bright Stars News Last week, the Nursery children had a great time making flags at Forest School. We squashed berries and leaves to make colourful marks on our material. Look at us waving our flags!

Dear Parents Thank you for filling the Auditorium to capacity on Wednesday to celebrate our Harvest Festival. I hope that you soaked up the wonderful atmosphere and that you are really proud of your children. Thank you so much for your enormous generosity in donating gifts for those who are less fortunate than us. Thank you to Mrs Barnes and her amazing team of helpers who organised and delivered the harvest gifts to Cherry Trees, Lime Grove Home for the Elderly and to the Homeless Shelters. They are all always so grateful for our offerings. You will receive a letter regarding After School Care, in particular Junior After School Club which runs from 4.00pm-5.00pm. We have had to change the arrangements for this service because we have had so many children staying who have not been booked in. Please can I encourage you to make reservations for your children if you wish them to benefit from a hot meal and a different activity each evening. Finally, I would like to wish you a relaxing half-term break ready to return for an exciting and special build-up to Christmas. Kindest regards Margaret Kieran Head of Junior Department

5th & 6th Form WW1 Battlefields Tour Our second group of 5th & 6th Formers headed off to the battlefields of Belgium and Northern France last weekend. We were once again fortunate to have sunny, mild weather. Having visited the Flanders Fields Museum and attended the Last Post ceremony in Ypres we had a good understanding of the background to the conflict. The huge loss of life was brought home by visits to the Tyne Cot Commonwealth cemetery (47,000), Langemark German cemetery (44,000) and the Menin Gate (55,000). We also went through the trenches and tunnels at Sanctuary Wood as well as Vimy Ridge. Marshall Curri was pleased to discover the Canadians who took Vimy Ridge in 1917 were led by his fellow Canadian, General Curri!

Charterhouse Wind Band Day The Cranmore Wind Band had tremendous fun at the Charterhouse Prep School’s Wind Band Day last week. Our top wind players were split into various groups according to their ability and rehearsed all afternoon. It was wonderful to see that so many of the Cranmore musicians were selected for the higher grade ensembles. To round off a productive day, the musicians from all the schools came together for a short concert to family and friends in the Llewellyn Room. My thanks to the Charterhouse staff for a very enjoyable day and for feeding us all with a splendid selection of cakes!

Mr Harris

Teambuilding at Hindleap Warren The Fourth Form enjoyed its team building trip to Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre at the end of September. An array of brave souls shook off the inclement weather and did their best to scale the increasingly slippery climbing wall during the morning session. The pupils also enjoyed the team exercises which tested their skills of problem solving, listening and communication. I, for one, particularly enjoyed watching the groups traverse the ‘lava bed’ with only three tyres and not a space to put a foot wrong, so to speak. It was a lovely way to start the year together and my thanks go to Miss Schembri, Mrs Preedy and Mr MacKinnon for their encouragement of all the children during our day out. Mr Chapman

AMAZING SpaceShow with guest star ‘Nao’ the singing and dancing robot!! Sponsored by the UK Space Agency, the ‘RoboKids’ show took our Form 3 and 4 audience on a fun and inspiring journey into the future of space and programming using robots. The audience had to help programme the friendly robot “Nao” and her friends for a joint human and robotic Aurora mission to the moon and beyond! Linked to the National Curriculum for computing, science and design technology, RoboKids delighted and inspired all present. Mrs McFadden Head of Science

Poetry Live! Last Thursday we were very privileged to spend National Poetry Day with a visiting poet, James Carter. http:// www.jamescarterpoet.co.uk/ James gave very enjoyable performances of his poems to all the children from Lower Preps to 4th Form (accompanied by his guitar called Keith and his keyboard Steve), and he led creative writing workshops with all the 3rd Formers, who produced some impressive poems.
