14th JUNE 2021

Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents, Throughout this academic year, our focus has been on the School value of compassion. There have been many shining examples from our pupils in their interaction with each other, their approach to teams from other schools and their unrelenting drive to support others in the community such as CAFOD, Mary’s Meals and Cherry Trees. We have had some excellent compassion presentations and assemblies. During art lessons, older pupils have been designing and creating a collection of butterflies for a school display, writing postcards for the residents of Lime Grove and our younger pupils have been busy making cards for each other with special messages of compassion.

There was a real buzz throughout the week with numerous Sports Day events in the Lower and Upper Prep Schools and I was delighted to see parents back on site in support of the pupils. The weather was on our side and the Sports Department and Nursery team did an exceptional job facilitating the different year group events, well done to everyone involved. Similarly, the auditorium has been full of life with a multitude of musical performances during assemblies and equally impressive Summer Serenades. We look forward to another oversubscribed Open Day this weekend, an opportunity to showcase our wonderful school. Mr Everitt

Three Cranmore Winners in Digital Art Competition! using our amazing new Samsung Flip Touch Board The Senior boys have been taking part in an art competition using the new Samsung Flip Touch board. Creating digital art by using paintbrushes on the interactive surface has been game changing for the art department as the board allows different brushes and levels of sensitivity to be used. The pupils have created some amazing pictures that were described by the judges as ‘incredibly artistic’ by some ‘very talented artists’. The competition was run by The Digital Line and sponsored by Samsung in order push the boundaries of technology in education in a positive way. Cranmore have been very fortunate to partner with The Digital Line during this competition and have enjoyed being able to be at the fore of technology in education research. A big well done to the three Year 7 winners, Max, Finlay and Billy who walked away with some incredible Samsung prizes and my thanks to Mrs Sanders for giving all the boys time to create such amazing works of art during their art lessons.

Exceptional performances by Chamber Strings and Year 7 flutes and wonderful Summer Serenade Concerts In assemblies this week Chamber Strings performed ‘Slavonic Dance’ by Dvorak and Year 7 flutes performed ‘Trio’ (unknown composer!). Congratulations to them all on these exceptional performances. This week it has also been wonderful to listen to our talented musicians during the Summer Serenade Series of concerts. From year group choirs to solo singers and instrumentalists, the many talented Cranmore musicians provided great entertainment to those listening in the Auditorium and those who were watching the live stream from home. Finally, congratulations to Yashraj S who gained Grade 1 Rock and Pop Drum Examination with Merit. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Year 7 pupils make Solar Stills in Science to mark Compassion Week Water Scarcity and showing Compassion for our Planet To mark Values week at Cranmore, Year 7s have been developing their compassion by learning about the challenge that faces over 1 billion people on the planet – water scarcity. They heard about the dangers many people face obtaining clean, drinkable water and some of the scientific advances which help them. This work built on their understanding of Changes of State and how we distil substances to purify them by evaporation and condensation. Year 7s made their own Solar Stills, using recycled plastic and cans, to separate pure water from muddy water; this useful technique is a handy survival technique too. These photos were taken during our work making Solar Stills as part of Year 7 lessons on Water Scarcity and the importance of Science in helping those facing these challenges. The temperatures were perfect for using Solar Energy on Monday and Wednesday! Dr Verny White, Science Teacher

Year 2 celebrate Week of Compassion and study mass in Science

In Year 2 we decided to celebrate our ‘week of compassion’ by writing a special message to each other. We all chose a name of someone in our class (without looking) including our teachers!

We then wrote a special message, gave it and read it to them. We decided where to put our special message in the classroom. We shared some of the messages and talked about how it felt to write and receive these wonderful messages. Year 2 are also learning all about mass in Science this week. They loved exploring different weights an investigating objects that were heavier and lighter.

Mrs Carpenter and Miss Freeman, Year 2 Teachers.

A Message from our Chaplain A reading from the Gospel of Mark Again He said, “What shall we say the Kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.” The Gospel of the Lord Praise to You Lord Jesus Christ The Kingdom of God This week we are focusing on the Kingdom of God and we hear how it is like a mustard seed. The mustard seed is one of the smallest of seeds. Jesus is reminding us that God's love is planted in each one of our hearts and once planted there it will grow through prayer and service. Let us pray this week that we may allow God's Kingdom to grow in our hearts; may His love take hold of us and grow roots in us.
