BOARDERS GO TO KINGSTON The boarders went on a trip to Kingston on Saturday, which is rapidly becoming their venue of choice for a shopping spree! The sun was shining and the girls were in jubilant mood as they enjoyed listening to street performers and purchasing food from the market stalls. On Sunday the girls enjoyed the sun in the afternoon and made cookies to celebrate Mother’s Day. For our last weekend this term, Chessington World of Adventures and a cream tea (and hopefully, some packing!) Mrs Wragg, Deputy Head of Boarding
Eco Tips of the week: Remember, tiny pips of balled foil won't be recycled because: a) they will probably fall through recycling machinery; b) if they don't fall through the machinery, our staff probably won't even see them; c) if our staff do see them, they won't be able to pick them up with gloves on. Try to ball your foil up to about the size of a tennis ball. Wrap them in bigger bits of used foil, if you need to.
ARMY CADET MARCHING COURSE On Saturday 19th March we went on a course for the Regional Marching Band at RAF Northolt from 0900 to 1600 hours. We learnt how to march in different formations and how to play instruments at the same time. In the first hour we learnt to march with other experienced cadets in different formations, before retiring to the RAF music rooms where we learnt a few pieces of music. This was the band room which is used by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. At 1500 hours we went back to the parade ground with our instruments and played the pieces while marching. At 1200 we marched to the canteen where we got to know some of the other cadets. They told us about the different badges we could earn and their past experiences. It was a truly unforgettable experience that we all thoroughly enjoyed. Abigail, Felicity and Gabriella Year 8 CCF Cadets
THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE BRAIN by Dr Guy Sutton What a wonderful day we had and how much information we learnt about the brain as our Sixth Form Psychologists, Biologists, Year 10 students and parents in the evening were treated to a series of engaging presentations by Dr Guy Sutton. Topics included the functioning of the brain, the effects of space travel, brain degeneration, the criminal brain, brain organoids, future developments and a brain dissection. Mr Gill, Head of Psychology

ST TERESA’S WEEKLY QUIZ ACCUMULATOR Please click here for this week’s quiz. As we come to the end of term look out next week for the final results table. How much will things change now? I dread to think! We’ll be back next term with a whole new revamped, snazzed up, uber-jazzy, cool as cucumber variation on this popular pastime, aka another weekly quiz…

SIXTH FORM NEWS During our Whole School assembly on Monday, Leah G (our Senior Prefect: Values) presented an assembly launching our Whole School Easter Egg Hunt! Students from all age groups have the opportunity to get involved in this hunt and work together within their teams to find clues, to result in working out the correct word to win an Easter egg! The Head Girl Team also addressed the school with another exciting event as the run up to Easter is approaching. They are organising an Easter themed boiled egg rolling race! During the Easter Period in the 1950s, the St Teresa’s girls used to roll hard boiled eggs down the front drive, and we decided to reminisce and re-enact what was done at Easter 70 years ago! We will take pictures of the girls rolling the winning eggs down the hill and send them to STOGA. It will be a competition for who will be lucky enough to roll their egg. There will be a race for both staff and students. The best decorated eggs (with the theme of character) from each year group, will roll their egg down the hill and the winner overall will get a chocolate Easter egg. This will be a fantastic end to the term and prepare us for an exciting Easter break!
On Monday, myself and 8 other Sixth Form students took part in a Teaching English as a Foreign Language course (TEFL) all day to earn our TEFL qualification. We started the morning looking at the English language vocabulary and grammar which really gave us an understanding into the struggles of learning English for the first time when it is not your native language; we take for granted how easy we find our own language to learn when it is actually very complicated for others. We spoke through some ideas and games that we can use as teachers to establish confidence within our students and keep them focused on the task at hand in the classroom. In the afternoon we were tasked with coming up with our own lesson plan which had to be operationalised so that another potential cover teacher would understand and be able to take over. It was a really enjoyable experience, and we are all looking forward to putting the skills we learnt into practice in many countries worldwide, as qualified TEFL teachers. Imogen L This week’s hockey match on Monday was against City of London Freemen’s School. It was the Upper Sixths (Hannah K and Nia M) last time playing for St Teresa’s. We played very well as a team, and we have improved so much this season. Unfortunately, the score was 5-0 to CLFS but this did not reflect the standard of play from St Teresa’s. Well done to all Sixth Form hockey players this season and thank you for getting involved. This Monday the Sports Scholars had a lovely dinner catered by Gary and the kitchen staff. Thank you for our delicious lasagne and brownies! The guest speaker was Leah Wilkinson, who plays hockey for Wales and played in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics for Great Britain, earning a bronze medal. She had an incredible story to tell about her journey of making it to an elite level hockey player. Thank you, Leah, for your motivational story that many girls can learn from. There was also a quiz about sports at St T’s in which Sixth Form girls (Hannah K, Pippa M and Ella W) were only just beaten by the Year 10s in a sudden death round. Congratulations to Hannah for winning the Senior Sports Scholar of the Year Award. Ella W (Sports Captain)
BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH Over the weekend 47 of our students and boarders completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Two days spent walking the Surrey Hills with an overnight stay camping. The girls all completed the assessment and with sore feet and a few blisters all girls should be congratulated for their commitment and behaviour. We look forward to them moving on to their Silver Award in the near future.
SIXTH FORM NEWS The A-Level Politics students from Years 12 and 13, including Lara A, Pippa R, Adeayo L, Freya R and myself went on a trip to London on Tuesday with Miss Marsden and Miss Nelson. We began our day with a tour around the Houses of Parliament. It was so interesting to go into both of the chambers and learn even more about Parliament to add to our knowledge we have already learnt throughout the course. Then, we walked through Whitehall, passed 10 Downing Street, to the Royal Courts of Justice. We also had a guided tour around the courts and learnt so much about both the history and the modern life within court. After that, we walked to Covent Garden to have a bite to eat for lunch, to then finish our exciting day out.
The Year 13 Business class had a wonderful opportunity to boost their grade at the grade booster workshop at Westfield White City cinema where we all met the examiners from tutor2u. This insightful workshop allowed us to explore in great depth how to answer A level style questions and gave us insightful tips on calculation methods and what the examiners themselves are looking for in answers to their questions. We thank Mrs Angel for organising such a supportive trip and to Mrs Randall for her kind assistance. Scarlett A
During our Enrichment Session on Thursday afternoon, all of the Sixth Form girls listened to a fascinating speaker Senior Technical Business Analyst at Credit Suisse. She is also a charity trustee and founded a social enterprise MDS Mentoring. Mr Neate met the speaker on the Trustee Board of Fight for Peace, a charity working with young people at risk from gang related involvement. She is an incredibly inspiring woman who has had an incredibly successful career in IT in the banking sector. It was fantastic to hear her story about her career path! During Year 10 and 11’s Year assemblies on Thursday and Friday of this week Kirsten L (Senior Academic Prefect) and Jess H (Academic Prefect) launched their Academic Tutoring scheme! The girls showed lots of interest and look forward to being tutored by the Year 12 students over the coming months in a variety of subjects.

On Friday, the Head Girl Team and Senior Prefect Team were invited to have lunch with the assistant Anglican Bishop in the Diocese of Guildford, the Bishop of Dorking, The Rt Revd Dr Jo Bailey-Wells. Bishop Jo is an inspirational forward thinking church leader, and a fine role model for women's ministry. Previously serving on the Archbishop of Canterbury's staff at Lambeth Palace, and a Cambridge Don. She also has a genuine love for young people, and oversees aspects of the independent school chaplaincy throughout the area. It was a wonderful occasion to meet her and find out more about the work she has done. During Period 5 and 6 on Friday, all the Year 12 and Year 13 students were presented with a retreat run by her. It was such a wonderful and relaxing way to end what has been a rather busy week! Emma W (Deputy Head Girl)

Following 12 years of our successful Senior Choir tours to Umbria, Florence, Venice, Vienna, Paris, Lake Garda and Barcelona, Athens and Malta, the 2022 Choir tour will be re-visiting the magical and beautiful island of Sicily! We will depart from school very early on Friday 14 th October by coach to Gatwick Airport in order to catch the 06.10 flight, and return in the afternoon of Monday 17 th October. All girls from Year 9 upwards in September 2022 are eligible to join the Choir and the tour. There is no audition for the Senior Choir (only the Chamber Choir requires an audition), but the girls are expected to commit themselves to the Choir for the coming two terms. Girls must be prepared to give priority to all rehearsals, which are held every Wednesday at 4.15pm until 5.15pm. Participation in the Autumn and Spring Concerts, and the Carol Service, are mandatory. Some photos from our Classical Concert last night.

PSHE NEWS Last week we shared with you guidelines about Snapchat. We know that colloquial language used by young people can be hard to interpret immediately. The Safeguarding Alliance has produced some guides to explain what emojis or acronyms used in messaging mean. These guides are attached. Some of the meanings may make for uncomfortable reading, but we feel that it is useful to share these in case you see them on your child’s device. We hope you find this information useful and we will endeavour to continue to share helpful material with you from relevant agencies.

NSEA Competition Reports At Coombelands on Sunday 20th March, we had a group of individual riders head out to compete at the Grassroots Show Jumping & RPL Qualifier. In the 70cm and 80cm RPL, Lilly S and Inde W both rode well and Inde placed 10th in both classes, and Lilly placed 9th in the 80cm. Well done girls! In the 60cm Grassroots, Pernille A rode well but unfortunately picked up some faults which knocked her out of the placings. Finally, Jessica R rode in the 40cm and 50cm Grassroots classes and rode clear in both classes, placing 6th in the 40cm and 3rd in the 50cm! Qualifying for the Grassroots Championships! Well done everyone! Also, over the weekend was the BSJA Just for Schools Championships! We only had one rider head over to Wales on a trip that took 3 hours! Jackson B rode in the 70cm and jumped double clears to land 7th as an individual! Congratulations to Jackson and his sister for doing brilliantly!
This Week In Chapel this week we continued our half-termly series looking at the close links between Faith and Science—and busting the myth that there is any divide. This week we looked at biology and medicine. Arguably the first person to systematically investigate the efficacy of herbal remedies was St Hildegard of Bingen. Hildegard truly was a polymath, investigating everything, but she had a particular interest in the traditional remedies that were used to treat the many visitors to her Abbey. As a woman of great faith, and now a Doctor of the Church, the investigating of the natural world and her spiritual life were inextricably linked.
Perhaps the most familiar name among those we looked at is Gregor Mendel, the Augustinian Friar who famously conducted his experiments in his monastery gardens, often caring for 25,000 pea plants at a time as he devised the early understanding of inheritance. To this day he is known as the Father of Genetics. Again, he was a man of huge intellect and unrelenting faith. Louis Pasteur is, of course, remembered as the Father of Microbiology. As well as devising the process that bears his name, pasteurisation, to remove harmful microorganisms from milk and other food, he also developed vaccines for Cholera, Rabies and Anthrax. Much of our work to minimise the impact of Covid is as a direct result of Pasteur’s work. And, yes, he was a man of deep faith, deeply devoted to Christ. Finally we found out about St Guiseppe Moscati who, in the early 20th Century, not only gained a saintly reputation for prayer, and for selfless care for the sick, recognising the link between spiritual and physical health, as well as developing the use of insulin to treat those with diabetes. Let no one spin you the myth about a divide between Faith and Science!
