Autumn Term

21 JUNE2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020

I write this amidst the Ragnarök of the end of term, so it will be brief. Please enjoy this range of photos that capture all the activity on site over recent days. We will see you tomorrow at Prize Giving, online on Teams from 11.30am, unless you are the parent of a Year 13 pupil. Well done to all prize winners, and to all girls for their splendid efforts this year. I wish you and your families all a restorative summer. Thank you for your huge support this year; we look forward to September! Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane

WINNER : ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Congratulations to our winner of the art competition; Youngin in Year 10.

BOARDING NEWS What a fantastic last week of term! We have certainly had such a memorable week. In amongst the packing, the Year 11s had their ball, we had a bake off with the boarders, we went to the Escape Room at the weekend and a Leavers Ball for the Year 13s.

We are certainly looking forward to next term where we will welcome new boarders and have planned a variety of weekend activities. We wish you a warm and restful Summer holiday and can't wait to welcome our boarders back in September!

SIXTH FORM NEWS Aspirations Newsletter The 2021 Summer Term Edition of the Sixth Form Aspirations Newsletter was published this week by the Sixth Form team with the aim of encouraging our Sixth Form students to make the most of their Summer Holiday time by fuelling their academic curiosity. This enrichment publication is traditionally sent to all Sixth Form students and parents at the end of every term, however, it struck me that there are ideas contained that other students may also wish to enjoy; high aspirations are not limited by age after all, and so please do click the link here to see the latest edition and enjoy! Wishing all of our students a wonderful and fun filled summer holidays. Miss Pitchford, Assistant Headteacher: Head of Sixth Form Year 12 Enrichment Talk Last Thursday LJ, one of our year 13 students, gave a very interesting and powerful enrichment talk on transgender misrepresentation in theatre and film, and why authentic representations are crucial to the trans community. After a presentation on the topic we were shown the premiere of a short film that LJ had made within the Drama and Film Undergraduate seminars for Year 13 A Level University Preparation Programme. The film followed a young person feeling alone and how they were able to overcome their own fears. Feedback from the audience was very positive with audience members sharing that it was ‘eyeopening, something we all need to be aware of’ (Lucy-Kate), ‘inspiring and educational’ (Amberleigh) and ‘amazing, Oscar worthy performance’ (Charlotte). Well done to LJ for preparing and delivering such an important enrichment session for Year 12 and we wish you all the best on your BA in Drama, Theatre and Film at University next year. Imogen L, Deputy Head Girl

Prep School Debate & Public Speaking Event in the Sixth Form Lecture Theatre This year, after being elected the Prefect for Debate & Public Speaking, I made it my mission to create the first ever Debate & Public Ppeaking Society down in the Prep. After extensive planning, the club launched and the sessions have been successfully commencing for half a year now, this is apparently the most popular prep club turnout ever! Running the first debate club is genuinely such a rewarding thing to be able to do, and I am so happy I was able to support the prep students in learning crucial skills such as debate and public speaking. Seeing them all blossom with confidence is extremely gratifying. To conclude this year, I orchestrated a Public Speaking event for my prep club girls down in the Sixth Form Centre, which they all thoroughly enjoyed and excelled in. I am very excited to carry out the club next year in the prep. For the future, I am creating an official Senior Debate & Public Speaking Team from September onwards with the English Department; I really look forward to starting this. Tilly JS, Public Speaking and Debate Prefect

SIXTH FORM NEWS CONTINUED Tough Mudder! On Friday, as their final PE enrichment session of the year, Year 12 students had the opportunity to participate in the nuts challenge, which is a 1.5-2hr obstacle course and team building exercise race on the outskirts of Dorking. There was lots of mud, a water assault course, climbing, crawling and challenging obstacles. The girls ended up soaked and covered in mud after swimming and running through the various obstacles and mud-made slides. Although this was not everyone’s cup of tea they all got stuck in and helped each other over the obstacles and through the trenches. Imogen L, Deputy Head Girl

Test The Teacher As the end of term is approaching and exam week has finished we couldn’t think of a better way to end than getting revenge on the teachers for some of the exam questions. The Head Girl Team and Mr Norris have taken on Dr McShane’s idea of an end of term quiz to another level with a twist. It involved the teachers being drenched with buckets of water. Unfortunately the Head Girl Team did end up getting soaked as Mr O’Farrell got all of the questions right! I am sure that Dr McShane may now regret her decision of the end of term topic. Year 12 Celebration Party On Wednesday we had our 'Survival Party' to celebrate coming to the end of the first year of A Levels. We had a very nice BBQ, organised by Gary and his team, music, decorations, chocolate fountain and some fun awards for the girls. The event was organised by our Sixth Form Events Committee Lara, Hannah, Abi D and me and, we are really pleased that everyone had a good time! We invited teachers who have helped us this year and made thank you speeches for the teachers who are leaving this year, everyone had a lot of fun, especially with the chocolate fountain and it was a really nice way to celebrate together as a year group before we go on our summer holidays! Imogen L, Deputy Head Girl
