YEAR 9 DRAMA NEWS PROMENADE REVIEW The Army Camp piece was a well performed, interesting and enthusiastic drama piece that I found amusing and impressive. They worked very hard at incorporating the audience into where they stood, how they gave instructions also interacting with the audience asking questions and giving orders. I found the play of an Army camp base worked very well with Promenade, how they were able to use the audience and it truly made you feel like you were being toured around the Army base. Their props and costumes were well presented and made it very easy to understand who the characters were and what they needed to do; all their costumes matched. By Etain S, Year 9

SIXTH FORM NEWS This week again has been a very busy, event filled week in the Sixth Form. We have officially begun our Christmas celebrations with the events committee decorating our Sixth Form Christmas tree on December 1st with Christmas music and lots of sparkling baubles in the Common Room. We are looking forward to our Sixth Form ice skating trip happening soon at Somerset House and all the other Christmas activities that we have planned, including gingerbread decorating, snowflake making and our Sixth Form Christmas lunch party! Thank you to all of the Sixth Form Events Committee members for their work organising our Sixth Form Christmas fun! On Tuesday, Years 11, 12 and 13 were lucky to have a talk by Samantha Garner who gave an interesting insight into the brain and bodily functions to why we feel stressed, including the amygdala and cortisol, which is the primary stress hormone. We were able to hear about different techniques that we could do in order to feel less stressed and be kind to ourselves, including reflecting on things we are grateful for and people we can go to. Elena, Mental Health and Wellbeing Prefect On Monday, the A level Chemistry Class participated in a Chemistry conference. It allowed us to further our knowledge in Chemistry beyond A Levels. We listened to a variety of talks by different researchers, which were both inspiring and fascinating, below are a few of the things we learnt about. These pictures

show how COVID lateral flow tests work. Hannah, Head Girl On Thursday our Years 12 and 13 Subject Ambassadors set up their subject stands in the Sixth Form Reading Room and welcomed in Year 11 students to help them to gain a better understanding about what each A Level subject entails. Year 11 girls had the chance to look through textbooks, look at coursework and most importantly ask the current girls studying the subjects any questions about what it is like to study each A Level subject. Gary and the catering team kindly provided all of us with breakfast too!

Last week 3 teams headed up to Keysoe International for the NSEA plate championships. They all jumped brilliantly, with the 3rd place finish in the 70cm for the Navy team and a 4th place for the Green Team. The Pink Team also finished 3rd in the 80cm. Antonia S and her horse The Frenchman became individual plate champions in the 80cm with almost a 2 second lead! Massive congratulations to all the girls, they rode brilliantly. Soraya: Equestrian Prefect

A massive thank you to those girls who sent in entries for the student magazine, all of the competitions have now come to a close whilst the girls make their decisions on winners. Please look out for the magazine at the end of term and spend the time reading through each of the sections. Lara, Deputy Head Girl Hope everyone has an enjoyable week and restful weekend. Imogen, Deputy Head Girl

YEAR 13 BUSINESS My wonderful Year 13 Business class have been busy preparing for their summer studies. Within the space of a few minutes, they had organised themselves to allocate different tasks and went about creating a really effective business case-study of businesses involved in International Sporting events. 75% of the students gained A-A* and I am seriously proud of their work to date. Maria Angel, Head of Business & Economics

We hope that you are all staying safe with the recent wave of illnesses heading through the school! Please do let us know as soon as you can if you will be unable to attend a riding lesson. It means that we don’t have the ponies tacked up and waiting around, and we can offer other jobs to the instructors to make the most of their time. If 48 hours or more notice is given for a cancellation, then the lesson will be credited and a catch-up lesson can be offered if we have the availability. It also then gives us the chance to offer the slot to another rider to have a make-up lesson.

We still have three tickets going for a trip to the International Horse Show on Thursday 16th December 2021. ALL ARE WELCOME! Please contact the office to find out pricings if you are interested.

Spring Term 2022 Riding Dates Lessons run from: Monday 10th January to Saturday 12th February Half term week – Monday 14th February to Sunday 20th February Lessons run from: Monday 21st February to Saturday 26th March

NSEA Competition Reports On Sunday 28th November, a few riders headed to Parwood to compete in NSEA show jumping. In the 40cm class, Jess R and Pernille A did brilliantly to come 2nd and 3rd respectively. Jess then stayed on for the 50cm class and placed 5th!

Lily S competed in the 60cm, 70cm and 70-75cm classes. STE has not been able to find out her placings, but she did qualify for the 60cm and 70cm Grassroots Championship! Well done everyone!

This Week This week we marked the beginning of the Church’s season of Advent - that wonderful period of preparation for the great feast of Christmas, when we remember the birth of our Saviour Jesus. In Chapel we heard the words from the prophet Isaiah who exhorted the people to prepare for their return, out of exile, to their home. Despite all the indications to the contrary, and despite the seeming impossibility of the return, Isaiah was filled with faith-filled hope that the time would come. In 1972 scientists at Stamford University conducted their famous ‘Marshmallow test.’ They observed whether young children would eat the marshmallow in front of them, or whether they would put off the immediate gratification, and wait a period of time, to then receive two marshmallows. The interesting follow up study suggested that those who at a young age had been able to delay the gratification had better outcomes in later life— better educational outcomes, better jobs, better housing and better health. It would appear that waiting - the principle theme of Advent - is actually good for us. Through this season of Advent we are encouraged to spend time reflecting on the coming feast - the birth of Jesus, the Saviour, who came into our world to save us and to open for us the way to heaven. But, unlike the experiment our hope is not in some fleeting, sweet treat but rather the answer to all our deepest needs and longings. We are called to be people of hope. Rather than holding out for some reward that will be given in the future - an illusory figment of our imagination where all is, like a marshmallow, pink and fluffy - we are encouraged to live lives that are characterised by hope, and to develop a deep trust in the God who loves us and who always accompanies us through life, in the good times and the hard times, a God who removes our fears and dreams his great dreams for us into our lives.
