Autumn Term

22 MARCH 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020

Dear Parents, After the year that we have had, I feel as though I have said everything that could possibly be said already, and probably twice. But nevertheless, my sentiments remain steadfast. Thank you for your wonderful support of St Teresa's and for sending your daughters up the hill every day - it is a pleasure to be a part of their lives. I wish to thank every single member of staff, whatever their capacity, for their fleetness of foot, their opening and closing of school, their good cheer, their ability to adapt, and for making it all seem so effortless when the reality is the opposite. It has been a hard term, no doubt, and I wish a very well-deserved rest to all. And finally, to our pupils: you are super, well done! Enjoy yourselves this holiday, and we will see you all in the summer term (and who knows, perhaps there will even be some proper normality!).

Sending you every good wish for a restorative Easter. Kind regards, Dr Claire McShane

ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION

Our winner of this week’s art competition is Elena L in Year 8. Please do send your entries to n.menzies@st-teresas.com

DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE EXPEDITION D of E resumed this weekend now that the winter lock down is slowly coming to an end. Forty-two Year eleven students arrived at St Teresa’s main car park last Saturday; they were fully equipped and ready to go. This was the real expedition, full kit list and big 65-litre rucksacks! However, spirits were high and the weather was good. All students were ready to set off after checking over the route on their maps. Mr Stephens met students on-route throughout the day to see how the groups were doing. However, Miss Corbat managed to walk the whole route! At the end of day one the students were tired but happy. The longest part of the routs was now over. On day two all students turned up! No one had decided to drop out which shows the fantastic determination of students at St Teresa’s. Day two went much the same as day one with students undertaking good navigation and keeping team spirts high! All groups arrived back at school no later than 5pm to successfully complete their Bronze D of E expedition.

MATHS NEWS On February, students studying mathematics in Years 9, 10 and 11 participated in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. The 60-minute challenge, consisting of fiendishly difficult multiple-choice questions, is sat by students across the country. Congratulations go to Rebecca L and Iris Z in Year 11 who achieved a gold award, awarded to the top 6% of participants. Well done also to Amily Z and Alyna B who were awarded silver certifications, as well as Elizabeth M, Evelyn N, Amelia S-M, Rhiannon E, Isabelle H, Ruoyan J, Rose M, Alexandra N, Kirsten L and Anna Y who achieved bronze awards. Mr Kasey Nunkumar, Maths Department

Correction to last week’s bulletin, the winner of the Portrait of a Scientist Competition was Zoe W, Year 9, for her drawing of Katherine Johnson the Nasa Mathematician. Congratulations Zoe.

BOARDING NEWS On our last weekend on the hill, we celebrated Issy's birthday. Her mum surprised us with a Domino’s delivery and chocolate cake. Our lovely chef also made doughnuts for the girls to share. Saturday morning started out with more baking and in the evening we had our last supper of the term. The girls requested McDonald's for dinner. On Sunday, we did lots of Easter activities, word searches, mazes, and mini basket making. The girls will do anything for chocolate - especially a chocolate bunny! Miss Mentz then made various milkshakes as an incentive for the girls to pack their rooms. We hope you have a wonderful Easter from the Boarding Team.

YEAR 7 SCIENCE CLUB The girls were given two weeks to grow some dried beans, seeds or lentils. Layla chose to grow a variety of mixed dried beans. She put some beans into three cups with some wet cotton wool, and placed them into different positions in her house to see the effects of the temperature and light levels. She was delighted with the end result which we think is magnificent. Well done Layla! The girls were told the theme for the science club quiz next week: animals, astronomy and acids. Prizes will be awarded for the top three.

ENRICHMENT SOCIETY

This week, Enrichment Society welcomed Grace G (Year 13) who delivered a fantastic presentation on the US Government’s role in the creation of ISIS. This presentation linked very closely with the research that Grace had undertaken for her EPQ, which was entitled ‘To what extent are the Bush Administration culpable for the rise of ISIS in Iraq’. Many thanks to Grace for preparing such an insightful presentation and to Dr Wedlake for chairing the session.

EnSoc will resume on Thursday, 22 April at 4:30pm with another pupil presentation, this time from Ella M (Year 12), who will present on artistic intention and links between the creative arts. Not to be missed! Happy Easter from the Enrichment Society Team!

CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD SUCCESS ‘Natasha and I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this years Chemistry Olympiad. The questions were very challenging and stretched our problem solving abilities. We would both recommend this to the year below to give it a try when they have the opportunity because it was such fun and well worth the challenge.’

ENGLISH NEWS Year 10 English classes have been writing newspaper articles on the murder of Sir Danvers Carew. Here are some great pieces written in the Victorian style, captured beautifully by Alexandra N and Jadwiga KL.

LOOKING FOR A HOME FOR 3 BABY GEESE! Florence in Year 12 needs to find a permanent home for 3 baby geese. She has acquired three eggs and once hatched will be keeping the geese for the first 2-3 weeks but is unable to keep them. They are currently in an incubator developing and they have around 3 weeks to go. She would love to find them a nice home before they hatch. If you are interested please contact Florence on florence.wigley@st-teresas.com

This Week Today, we joined together as a school community for our End of Term Lenten Reflection. We observed the traditional devotion of the Stations of the Cross, accompanied by specially composed versions of the traditional Good Friday Hymn, Stabat Mater Dolorosa. At each Station, we meditated on the images of the Stations of the Cross from the School Chapel, and we reflected on the meaning of Jesus’ actions for us today. And, in an imaginative twist, we also heard reflective monologues from Pilate, Peter and the Centurion. Special thanks goes to all those who contributed so generously, particularly to Ella, Lara and the Schola Cantorum for their music, and Cameron, Ella, Charlotte and the Sixth Form Senior Prefect Team for leading the prayers and reflections so sensitively.
