St Teresa’s Egg Rolling 2022 Wishing everyone a Happy Easter.

BOARDING NEWS What a week ! The Boarders did some creative writing in our Poetry competition on Monday night - Well done Maria and Celia for helping Miss B-A. Saturday morning the girls woke early to miss the traffic to get to Chessington World of Adventures. It was very busy, but the girls enjoyed their rides and ate plenty of fast food. The evening was spent with an impromptu swimming session with Mrs Wragg and the Gaps. They still had a lot of energy after Chessington. On Sunday, we visited church and came back for afternoon tea and egg decorating for the egg rolling competition. On Monday evening, we travelled to Woking Theatre to see Singing in the Rain - it was fantastic - the girls watched, sang, and clapped their way through the show. They even met one of the stars afterwards! Although late back, the girls managed to get up for school on time. What a great last week with the girls.

We hope you all have a wonderful Easter and look forward to welcoming back the girls on the 25th April. Mrs Wragg, Deputy Head of Boarding

BOARDERS’ WEEKEND FUN

Eco Tips of the week: A really simple and fun way to jazz up the garden is to make plant pots with your old wellies. Not only do they look unique, but they will add some colour. Here is how to make your own: Give the wellies a quick wash using warm soapy water. Drill a few small holes in the sole of the boot (ask an adult to help). This will allow any water to drain out of them. Fill the bottom of the boot with some pebbles. This will help to drain the water and act as a weight in case of blustery weather. Add in some compost, making sure it reaches all the way to the bottom. Leave about a 2” gap at the top, this is where the seeds/flowers will go. Now you are ready to plant your seeds or plants. Once planted, fill the rest of the welly boot with compost and water.

ARMY CADET MARCHING COURSE The CCF had its first night-time exercise this week and it was a great success. The contingent were taught how to apply camouflage make up to their face and this was completed with mixed results! They examined a 24 hour ration pack and were shown how to utilise 4000 calories! After some food they were sent on a mission to discover an enemy base at the school. Using hand signals and evasion movements the flights navigated via check points to the enemy position and carried out surveillance before reporting back to command station. The summer camp letters have been issued and the CCF are going to RAF Halton on Saturday 16th July. Sqn Ldr Pearson Contingent Commander Effingham Schools CCF

YEAR 9 TRIP TO THE SCIENCE MUSEUM Three of the Year 9 forms went to the Science Museum this week and spent much of the time in the Wonder Lab. Making bridges, experimenting with sound, colour and electricity were some of the highlights. The centripetal force experiment was the most completed with Mrs Cawley also taking a turn! The girls were tasked with finding out interesting facts in the Ancient Greeks: Science and Wisdom exhibit which proved very competitive! A great day out with much learnt.

SIXTH FORM NEWS Firstly, I would like to announce that the Gardening Club is now up and running! The previous Head Girl Team introduced this last summer and the new Head Girl Team wanted to carry on the tradition. On Friday a group of girls ranging from Year 7 to Year 12 planted some fruit in the greenhouse with the help of Charlotte R (Prep and Lower School Prefect). After half term they will be planting lots more fruits and vegetables every Friday. Thank you to Olivia M (Head Girl) for leading this and she will be overseeing the club throughout the Summer Term.

On Tuesday the Sixth Form Girls went round to form rooms from each year and gave the team leaders the Easter Egg Hunt clues! Each envelope had individual clues in it to lead each team to letters hidden around the school, that unscrambled a secret word. The girls had the rest of the week to go around the school to find the missing letters during Break and Lunch times. In the Sixth Form Centre on Friday Lunchtime, the teams came to find the Easter Bunny, to present their secret word and were given a big Easter Egg as a prize! Well done to all of the teams who participated and enjoy your well-deserved chocolate egg! I would also like to say a huge well done to Leah G (our Senior Values Prefect) for organising this incredible event. It was a wonderful occasion for the whole school to have some Easter Egg fun before the Easter Holidays. In addition to this, the Sixth Form had their own Easter Egg Hunt during lunchtime on Wednesday. It took place all around the Sixth Form Centre. The girls from Years 12 and 13 had so much fun, running around trying to find as many eggs as they could! Thank you to my fellow Events Committee members (Imogen L and Ellie H) for organising this activity for all the girls.

This week has seen the Drama Department put on a musical showcase! Singers and dancers from all across the school performed an eclectic mix of numbers from musicals including Legally Blonde and Moulin Rouge. This was the first time in two years that a production was able to run for two nights when it was supposed to, and emotions ran rather high as a result. Everyone did a wonderful job, and as a result it was a really good show, with a high level of professionalism all around. From the Sixth Form, Ella and Ruby performed, supported by Freya as a lighting technician, and Miss Pitchford back stage! Special thanks to Miss Hansen, Mr Melvin, Miss Richards, Mr Caister, Mrs Yalden and Mike for running the show. We all really appreciated the time and effort they put into making the show such a resounding success. Freya R (Drama Captain) The Year 12 girls had an online talk from the University of Strathclyde on Tuesday morning during their weekly career’s lesson. They taught us about Scottish Universities in general and why we should consider them for further education. Last week we had our Unifrog launch, starting to make our University shortlists for selection and so this talk was good timing to help us decide if a Scottish university is for us.

During Form Time on Wednesday, the whole of Year 12 and 13 decorated a hard-boiled egg, which we rolled down the front driveway on Friday afternoon! The egg rolling competition was open to all year groups and staff. On Thursday morning, they brought their decorated eggs to the Sixth Form Centre and the Head Girl Team judged them. The winning two from each year were invited to roll their eggs down the driveway on Friday. This event was special because it brought back the tradition of Egg Rolling that St Teresa’s Girls used to do in the 1950s. The winner from each age group, and staff, was the person whose egg rolled down the hill the fastest! They received a big Easter egg as a prize!

This Tuesday lunchtime was the first of our Oxbridge Programme exploring undergraduate faculties at Oxbridge. Session 1 was Science and Social Science Faculty. We were lucky enough to be visited by a St T’s Alumnae student Cameron, who left St T’s last year to go to Oxford University. They are currently studying Philosophy and Psychology and have just completed their first year prelims. Cameron gave an insightful talk about what life is like studying at Oxford as well as how the Sixth Form and general school experience at St Teresa’s prepared them for university life. They also talked about the application process involved and gave helpful advice to those listening. After their presentation, the Year 12 Oxbridge students were given one-to-ones in which they got to ask Cameron any questions which they had about life in general at university, or anything they had to ask, which they all found beneficial. It was wonderful to have Cameron back at school and we hope that they will come back next year to share further advice! Kirsten L (Senior Academic Prefect)

I would also like to say Well Done and Thank You to Kirsten L (Senior Academic Prefect) for creating our Sixth Form Aspirations Newsletter for the Easter Holidays. This Spring Term edition will also be shared with Years 11 and 10 students to give them a taste of life in the Sixth Form and so look out for it in your inbox over Easter. During Sixth Form PSHCE on Thursday afternoon, we were delivered a talk from Shawn Attwood who was a reformed drug addict and dealer who went to prison in America and told us his horrific stories. He has now published 15 books on his experience. It was a really inspiring life story; thank you to Mr Attwood for sharing it with us all. We really enjoyed it. Lastly, I wish you all a wonderful and restful Easter Holiday and look forward to keeping you updated on the Sixth Form news when we return to school for the Summer Term! MUSIC NEWS CLASSICAL CONCERT The Classical Concert last Thursday was a great success and was very well received by the audience who enjoyed the authentic sounds of Baroque and Classical music. The String Ensemble made a wonderfully rich sound in the Vivaldi concerto, which featured the soloists Gabriella G and Felicity H. Gracie treated everyone to a piece by Torelli, and Alicia A sang Vittoria by Carissimi with panache. In the second half, Eleanor M and Matilda H sang some beautiful Schubert songs accompanied by the period piano. Mr Thompson gave us all much useful information about the instruments and the style, and we are very grateful for the loan of his piano and spinet.

CHOIR TOUR TO SICILY The Music Department is delighted to launch the Senior Choir Tour to Sicily from October 14 th to the 17th 2022. During the trip we will visit Mount Etna, see the amazing archaeological sites at Syracuse and soak up the amazing culture of the area. Shopping time will be included plus masses of fabulous Sicilian ice cream...and of course some concerts as well! Following 12 years of our successful Senior Choir tours to Umbria, Florence, Venice, Vienna, Paris, Lake Garda and Barcelona, Athens and Malta, the 2022 Choir tour will be re-visiting the magical and beautiful island of Sicily! We will depart from school very early on Friday 14th October by coach to Gatwick Airport in order to catch the 06.10 flight, and return in the afternoon of Monday 17 th October. Exact times are to be confirmed. I am delighted to say that we will also be taking some instrumental players on this trip.

The tour will include 3 concerts, and we will have the use of a coach for the duration of the visit. As usual we will have a packed itinerary. We will stay in a 4-star hotel near Taormina. From there we can visit Mount Etna, plus have a boat trip and explore the archaeological sites at Syracuse and experience the amazing history of the area. All girls from Year 9 upwards in September 2022 are eligible to join the Choir and the tour. There is no audition for the Senior Choir (only the Chamber Choir requires an audition), but the girls are expected to commit themselves to the Choir for the coming two terms. Girls must be prepared to give priority to all rehearsals, which are held every Wednesday at 4.15pm until 5.15pm. Participation in the Autumn and Spring Concerts, and the Carol Service, are mandatory.

MARCH’S THEME: DIGITAL WELLBEING Loneliness amongst children and young people is skyrocketing – is tech the culprit? by Alicia Drummond, Therapist & Founder of The Wellbeing Hub. The use of phones as a way of communication has become so ubiquitous for our children that even when they are together many are more attuned to what is going on on their phones than to one another. And exposure to online communication is starting younger and younger. Alicia discusses the impact of screens on the loneliness of children and young people, and what parents and carers can do to alleviate loneliness at home. Read the full blog in The Wellbeing Hub - link HERE.
