Firstly, I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year! After a restful break, we are ready to get back into normal school routine in the Sixth Form; Year 13 are beginning to prepare for their Mock Examinations after February Half Term and Year 12 are undertaking their Student Leadership Applications.

On Tuesday, in our Year 12 Careers lesson, Mrs Randall invited Sheffield University to deliver a second talk on university applications. The Admissions Representative encouraged us to look at the core subjects, such as Maths, but that there are a multitude of options for university- through UCAS there are 37,000 courses! He introduced us to opportunities that align with our interests for example, instead of studying English Literature you could undertake English Literature with East Asian Studies. Overall, it was an amazing learning experience and hopefully we can utilise his advice when applying to university this year!

On Wednesday, during our weekly Sixth Form PE lesson we split into three groups where we either played basketball, went in the Gym, or did Yoga. We all really enjoyed our sessions and mixing between the year groups.

On Thursday, Miss Pitchford presented an assembly to the Year 12 girls where she launched the 2023/24 Student Leadership Team application process. She went through the process, explaining how to apply for a Prefect, Deputy Head Girl or Head Girl role and to be a part of the Head Girl Team for 2023/2024! Myself, Liv and Pippa also said a few words to the girls at the end of the end of Assembly, we cannot believe that our time in office is coming to an end!

At lunchtime on Thursday, the January Oxbridge Seminar took place. This week members of the Oxbridge Programme from Years 10, 11 and 12 enjoyed an informative talk from former student Ella M. Ella finished Year 13 in July 2022 and she returned to share her experience of her first term studying BMus Music at Trinity College, Oxford. Ella also discussed various aspects of her application process and informed us the best way to prepare is through reading! We look forward to future Oxbridge sessions, and welcome any budding Oxbridge applicants, to come along to future Oxbridge Programme events.

On Friday during Period 5, the Sixth Form had their Enrichment Session, where the Years 12 and 13 students split into integrated groups to do different activities. These included yoga, volunteering, wellbeing, current affairs and learning a new skill. It was great for both years to get together and enjoy their enrichment session before the weekend!

PSYCHOLOGY

TRIP TO UNIVERSITY OF SURREY

The Psychology Department are taking a trip to the University of Surrey on Monday 30th January 2023 as part of the St Teresa’s Year of Intellect. During the visit they will see the Psychology Department facilities, observe demonstrations by university lecturers and hear about up-to-date research findings. A packed lunch will be provided and transport will be via the school minibuses. We shall be leaving school at 9:00am and returning around 3:40pm.

OXBRIDGE MASTERCLASS

We invite you to attend the Oxbridge Masterclass UK Student Conference, which will be held on Thursday 9th March 2023 in Oxford. This is an event designed for bright, ambitious students from 14 to 18 years old, who might be thinking about applying to study at the UK's oldest and most prestigious universities. As the school value we are promoting this year is Intellect, we have decided to open up the invitation to all girls in Years 10-13, rather than only to a select Oxbridge cohort. The trip is entirely optional, but we strongly encourage participation by anyone considering an eventual application to Oxford, Cambridge or another Russell Group university. Further details can be found at https://thrivingminds.org/conferences/uk-student/ The conference begins at 10.00am, so we will be heading out from school by coach at 7.30am to accommodate possible traffic issues. It finishes at 3.15pm, meaning we should be back by 5.00pm if all goes well. A charge of £45 will cover the cost of the tickets themselves, a packed lunch from school catering, and transportation.

YEAR 9 NOUGHTS AND CROSSES TRIP

We are planning to take Year 9 to the Rose Theatre in Kingston on Thursday 2nd February 2023, to watch a matinee performance of Noughts and Crosses. As they are studying this play, it would be very beneficial for them to see the production. The cost of the ticket and transport will be £30, which will be added to your end of term bill. The pupils will have lunch at school beforehand and we anticipate a return time of 5:15pm. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Please return the consent form to me by email or hard copy by Monday 16th January 2023.

We hope that you have had a good Christmas Holiday and a Happy New Year, and are looking forward to the new term!

As the weather is so variable at the moment, please make sure that you come with a jumper (no hoodies!) and/or a coat to wear when it’s chilly out or raining. As we are on top of a hill, we get a bit of a cold wind when riding in the arena!

While the weather is showing on and off rain, we’d like to remind our riders that we still run lessons in the wind and rain provided there is not a risk to anyone’s safety. As an alternative for those who don’t want to ride, then we do offer stable management lessons in the warm barn.

February Half Term Activities

Check out our online site to book your spaces now!

Over the Christmas break, STE ran Christmas Pony Mornings and private lessons. These were great fun, and everyone was dressed up and covered in tinsel!

On the week between Christmas and New Year, the ponies had a well deserved break! They were still looked after in their usual routine, but didn’t have any lessons or were ridden. This means they’re back fresh and rested for the new term’s lessons!

The horse of the week is… Charlie!

NSEA News

Over the holidays, some riders took part in NSEA training at Pycombe on the 30th December in pouring rain. Good job!

Congratulations to Lulu S for taking a fantastic win in the November NSEA Pop-up dressage with an incredible 77% in Novice 24.

Pop-up dressage is filmed from your own arena at home and submitted online for judging. It’s open to all NSEA combinations nationwide & you accumulate points throughout the year. Tests run from Intro to Novice and it’s a great way to get some feedback without having to plait up and leave the yard!

This Week

With the beginning of the New Year there is something of a tradition to reflect on resolutions for the year ahead. In Chapel this week, as we continue to celebrate the season of Christmas, we reflected on the Feast of the Epiphany, when the Magi visited the Christ-child. The Magi give us a model of the spiritual life. It would be good to build our resolutions on how they acted.

Firstly, the Magi were observant, faithfully surveying the night sky for the awesome news of the new-born king. We are called to be watchful, and to recognise with scrupulous attention the signs of God’s purpose in our lives.

Once they had seen the star, they were impelled to move. The length and danger of the journey didn’t put them off. They were prepared to act. We too are called to move, and to set aside our fear, laziness or the influence of bad habits and head in the direction that God is showing us.

There were certainly difficulties for the Magi. Deceitful Herod planned to subvert the Magi’s plans for his own gain. We too must expect there to be opposition when we follow God’s path but we are encouraged to persist regardless.

On their arrival the Magi dug deep and gave precious gifts from their treasures. As we approach Christ we too are called to give of our very best and to make our lives a gift for our King, our God and our Saviour. Finally, they returned by another way. No one can encounter Christ without expecting to changed by the experience. And that is the very point of our resolution - to end this year as a different person, a person orientated, like the Magi, towards God in our lives.
