SIXTH FORM NEWS

Hi all,

Easter has arrived! We have been eggtremely busy in the Sixth Form. We started off Monday with a talk from a St. T’s alumnae, Ophelia, in our Careers lesson. She lent us advice on all things A-levels, UCAS, University and specialist Drama pathways. Her advice was especially encouraging as she reminded us that it’s ok to not have everything figured out yet and to learn from our mistakes.

Izzy K said that “It was very beneficial and helped me see the difference between a dance school and a dance university”.

We have also been continuing our use of Unifrog, a platform for sixth form students to research university courses, apprenticeship opportunities and career paths. We completed various personality quizzes to show us our strengths, weaknesses, interests and passions.

We’ve also been on a roll in our preparation for our annual Egg Rolling Race. On Thursday, the sixth form gathered in the reading room to decorate over 70 eggs, to be raced on Friday. We also welcomed the delivery of eggs from students and staff across the school and the Head Girl Team chose the winners for the best decorated category (congratulations to all the winners), which was a difficult feat as they were all eggcellent. The race itself took place on Friday: it was full of suspense, passion and avidity. The combination of music, cheering and megaphone-shouting added to the thrill. Congratulations to the speediest eggs!

I hope you have a wonderful Easter,

ECUADOR DONATION

You may recall that the Hall family worked together to make a large donation of clothes, shoes and toys to an Ecuador orphanage. We have just received word that the donations all made it! They were donated to an orphanage run by an American couple, funded by European and American donors. The girls were thrilled with their new wardrobe, it is so lovely to see it all come to fruition and the happy faces of the children.

EGG ROLLING

Excitement filled the air as everyone cheered their eggs on!

BOARDING NEWS

Over the weekend the girls were excited to take a trip into London. The girls visited the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Throughout the museum, there are exhibits showcasing memorabilia, props, and paraphernalia associated with the Sherlock Holmes stories, including replica period costumes, pipes, magnifying glasses, and other detective tools. Additionally, visitors can learn about the history of Sherlock Holmes and the impact of Conan Doyle's works on literature and popular culture through informative displays and interactive exhibits. After an educational and fun experience the girls went and had some lunch in Chinatown. Enjoying all the different variety of foods to fill up on. Lastly to finish off the day they went to the mixed reality butterfly trail in the centre of London where the girls had the opportunity to hold their own butterfly on the tip of their fingers.

Throughout the week to celebrate the Easter break coming up, the boarding house hosted a Boarding Easter dinner. Much merriment was had whilst enjoying the lovely food provided as well as a break in the evening for time to appreciate and commemorate the boarders achievements in the boarding house. Some of the girls got vouchers and sweet treats to congratulate them on their positive efforts within the boarding house. The girls enjoyed lots of fun activities during the week such as face painting and an easter egg hunt. Many creative designs were painted on each other’s faces such as eater eggs, hearts, butterflies.

SCIENCE STEM WORKSHOP

On Wednesday the Science Department welcomed a team from BAE Systems, RAF and Royal Navy who delivered an ELECTRIFYING show about all things electricity. The girls inYears 7 and 8 engaged in a variety of activities and thoroughly enjoyed learning about how we generate electricity. Mrs Pearson even got up and showed her pedal-power at the end!

Not only was the roadshow educational and informative, it was also exciting and fun, and highlighted the huge array of different careers in engineering and science. We know that our girls have great potential and hope that we have inspired some of them to follow a path in engineering and science.

‘MOVE IT’ DANCE TRIP

GCSE and A Level dancers enjoyed a trip to ‘Move It’ Dance festival on Friday 15th March. The girls were so excited to get involved with classes and workshops in a variety of dance styles as well as watching performances from dance schools and professional companies on the main stage. A special mention goes to Freya and Jess who both had the confidence to perform on the freestyle stage! Also a huge well done for Darcey who was scouted for a circus skills company in her workshop on the day! A fun and inspiring day had by all.

MATHS FEAST

On Tuesday the 19th of March, eight Year 10 girls travelled to Cobham Free School for the Maths Feast, a competition that involves four rounds, with each one scoring a maximum of 25 points. We were in teams of 4 and both teams did extremely well, with one of the teams scoring 24 points in Round 2. The rounds included maths crosswords, code-breaking, origami and one based on the ITV show ‘The 1% Club’.

We all had so much fun problem-solving and we are proud to have one team come 9th out of 22 teams. The second team narrowly missed out on a top-ten finish, coming in 12th place. Both teams did extremely well, and we kept the origami model we made. Congratulations to all our team members Fizzy, Julia, Jamie, Rennes, Emily, Gabi, Katy, and Layla. Well done!

ALANA E MENUHIN HALL PERFORMANCE AND EUROPEAN TOUR NEWS

St Teresa's Year 7 music scholar harpist Alana performed in the annual Youth Harp Orchestra of Great Britain showcase concert last Sunday at the Yehudi Menuhin Concert Hall.

Alana also delivered a solo “The White Gulls’ Flight” by B Paret during the programme inspired by the rapid beating of seagull wings as they swoop over waves. To play in such a prestigious venue to a large audience is a praiseworthy achievement and she performed with confidence, poise and joyful musicality.

Concert reviews of Sunday's Harp Orchestra Menuhin 17/03/24 performance by attendees including Luisa Cordell (composer and founder of the NYHO) and acclaimed composers Liz Lane and Paul Lewis:

“Congratulations to members of NYHO for the most amazing performance at the Menuhin Hall on Sunday. The Colour Storm project composition together with their artwork was outstanding."

"A truly fabulous and unforgettable concert! Congratulations to one and all!"

“Many thanks to the super talented National Youth Harp Orchestra of Great Britain their conductor Luisa-Maria Cordell for a fabulous concert yesterday in beautiful surroundings, and premiere of my Emerald Waltz on St Patrick’s Day. It’s been wonderful to work with you all!”

"Our new younger NYHO members played with such gusto and musicality. And Baroque Flamenco quite rightly had the audience in raptures. - phenomenal performance. Bravo!”

This Easter, Alana will embark on her first European trip with the NYHO where she will attend workshops and perform in Seville, Spain and the Algarve, Portugal as well as collaborate with the Portuguese Youth String Ensemble Camerata Gold.

ONE OCEANT-SHIRT COMPETITION

This year we thought we’d give you all the opportunity to design the new One Ocean t-shirt that we’ll use for our One Ocean trip! This means we need you to get creative and design a t-shirt that embodies everything about One Ocean. Think about sustainability, sea creatures, plastic pollution, waste reduction and more! We’re looking for something that represents everything you’ve learned and want you to be as imaginative as possible.

Once all the submissions are in from all the schools, the entries will be reviewed by a board of KBR staff who will pick the winning t-shirt out of all the entries! The winning design will be transformed by the KBR graphics team so it’s ready for the t-shirt printing. This design will be printed onto the t-shirts and made for everyone to take home. There will be one winner overall, and a prize for the runner up from each school.

For the t-shirt competition, there are a few rules you need to follow to make sure you’re in with a chance of winning!

 Your design must have #KBROneOcean in it

 You cannot include your school logo (the competition is running across multiple schools!)

 We’d love it if you could include the One Ocean logo in your design!

 You can design it by hand or on the computer

 You can include a bio with your entry, explaining your picture, what it means and how it relates to One Ocean

 Make sure your drawing is big! Small details won’t be picked up on the final t-shirt

 Any writing must be clear and readable

 Make sure that your t-shirt design fits on the layout.

The designs must be completed no later than 4pm on the 22nd April 2024. Please hand them in to Mrs Menzies or Miss Bird who will then collect them.

If you would like a paper copy please go and see Mrs Menzies.

Horse Breeds:Thoroughbreds

Thoroughbreds were first bred in England in the 17th– and 18th-century and is now a wellrecognised breed across the world.

They were primarily bred and used for racing due to their agility and speed, as they can go exceptionally fast of up to speeds of 44mph! They tend to race when they are younger, and some retire early or are sold on after their racing years. However,Thoroughbreds are also known to do well in other disciplines as well.

Buying or rehoming an ex-racing horse can be hard work due to their nature and physique, but can also be very rewarding.

Design an Easter Egg!

Use one of the pre-made paper templates found in the equestrian office or design your own.

You can take it home, or if you pin it on the board STE will use them in Easter Egg Hunts over the holidays!

This Week

When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body.

Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other,“Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

“Don’t be alarmed,” he said.“You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter,‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’’”

We wish everyone a happy and holy Easter! He is risen!
