SIXTH FORM NEWS
Hi all,
I hope your week has been great.
On Monday, Year 12 selected their higher education specialist pathways for our Higher Education Event in June. Some of these pathways include medicine/veterinary/ dentistry, Oxbridge, Art, and Degree Apprenticeships. We were also able to choose our activities for the Virtual Work Experience Week in July, in key industries with a leading employer in that space. These include working with the NHS, BBC and Accountancy opportunities, which we are looking forward to.
The Year 13 Art Exams have begun, and we wish them the best of luck. Revision has also continued throughout the sixth form as each year prepares for their exams.
Bella M and Chloe H, met with the Head of Years this week to discuss their plans for Values Week and Bella’s Faith Project. The project is to challenge yourself to complete a task which you have been avoiding for some time (e.g. reading more books, running and swimming) for 6 weeks (until Values Week), to learn new skills and as an exercise in having faith and believing in yourself.
The sixth form also helped out on Friday for open morning. Our Head Girl Abi B delivered a speech, whilst other students welcomed prospective pupils and their parents answering any questions they had.
Have a lovely weekend,
Amelia (Deputy Head Girl)
OPEN DAY
It was wonderful welcoming so many families to our open morning on Friday. Well done to all the girls who helped out and gave tours round the school! The feedback we received highlighted the enthusiasm, confidence and kindness that each of you displayed. Thank you for being such great ambassadors.
YEAR 10 PARENTS SIXTH FORM INFORMATION EVENING
It was wonderful welcoming so many of our Year 10 parents from across the Trust to our Sixth Form information evening! We look forward to seeing you and your children at the Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 11 September.
BOARDING NEWS
Evenings are buzzing with excitement as our boarders engage in funUno, and Bananagrams. Laughter and friendly competition fill the air as they bond over these classic games.
Our boarders have explored the vibrant city of London on Saturday , discovering its hidden gems and iconic landmarks. From bustling markets to historical sites, there's always something for each girl.
Many of our girls have been channelling their inner artists, exploring the world of oil pastel paintings. It's been wonderful to see their creativity flourish as they express themselves through art. Some of the Boarders also visited the Equestrian centre and groomed the horses on Sunday, what a great way to finish the weekend!
From tennis club to cookery club, our boarders are actively participating in a variety of afterschool activities. These clubs provide the perfect opportunity for them to pursue their interests and learn new skills.
ENSEMBLES CONCERT
On Monday the Music Department hosted the Spring Ensembles concert in Mairlot Hall.
The concert opened with an exciting performance of ‘Overture from Annie’, performed by the Symphony Orchestra, who were then joined by Sinfonia for a fun, light-hearted ‘Oom Pah Pah’ from ‘Oliver’. The Schola Cantorum sung ‘The Heavens Are Telling’ by J Haydn beautifully. Olivia J and Mrs Wharmby followed this with a fantastic piano duet, performing ‘Arrival of the Queen of Sheba’ by Handel. Next, the staff and sixth form choir sung the ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ from 42nd which was very entertaining. The string ensemble played ‘Flower Duet’ from Lakme wonderfully, followed by two lovely performances by the Showstoppers Choir. Gabriella D P G and Felicity H played an incredible performance of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto in D minor. The evening ended with an excellent performance from concert band, of ‘Colonel March’ by KJ Alford.
This was an amazing way to end the fabulous concert and well done to everyone who took part.

This Week
This week we completed our journey through the Resurrection appearance as we considered the experience of Thomas (John 20). Thomas famously was not there when the disciples first met Jesus in the Upper Room on that first Easter Sunday.
‘Unless I see the evidence, I wont believe!’ he tells the others. And so he has been known as ‘Doubting Thomas’ ever since - a title that he doesn’t really deserve!
Perhaps the first thing to notice are Jesus’ words to the disciples ‘Peace be with you!’ We are reminded that the first gift of the resurrection is peace, the peace that Jesus alone can give. In the resurrection the relationship with God, that had been irreparably damaged by the disobedience of Adam in the Garden (Genesis 2) has been restored. As we saw with Mary, that peace that was present at the very dawn of creation is now reestablished and available because Jesus has defeated sin and death forever.
Thomas comes across as amongst the most contemporary of characters, with his demand for empirical evidence of the resurrection. He reflects a very common view within society, known as scientism, that requires a scientific proof before anything can be believed. There are two big issues with this approach. Firstly, there is no scientific proof that the statement itself is true. This is all a bit philosophical, but the argument falls apart if it can’t be proven scientifically. Secondly, it just isn’t our experience. When we consider, for example, love, there is no scientific proof of it’s existence, yet we know, in both our hearts and minds, that it is true. The same is true of beauty and of what is good. There is a higher order of proof that goes beyond just the physical.
And finally we notice that Thomas lacks faith when he is apart from the community, yet comes to faith when he is within it. As John Donne reminds us ‘No man (or woman!) is an island.’ We born for community and only truly come alive within that context.
So ‘doubting’ seems an inappropriate appellation for Thomas who is the first to declare ‘my Lord and my God.’ Perhaps we should rather call him ‘Believing Thomas’ and then, more importantly, follow his example!
