This Week’s Headlines

Dear Parents, At the end of the second week, things are beginning to fall into the natural warp and weft of the school year. Excitingly, 'normal' things are happening once more: we've had two away (away!) hockey tournaments, and our first major event of the school year took place as we welcomed both internal and external Year 11 girls to our Sixth Form Open Evening. The event was a huge success, helped immeasurably by our excellent Head Girl Team, Senior Prefects, Prefects and Sixth Form pupils; they were informative, lively and jovial, and are always the best advert for all the wonderful aspects of the Sixth Form at St T's. My thanks also to the staff who gave up their time to 'sell their wares' - with some good-natured competition springing up between departments! Gardening Club has also harvested the fruits of their labour, with some fine-looking carrots (one of which was proudly placed on my desk by the Head Girl Team - a particularly good specimen) and runner beans making their way to the kitchen for integration into Boarders' supper. Next week, the squashes and chillies will be gathered. Our full complement of extra-curricular activities is now in full swing; for an idea of what is on offer, please do check the school website under 'News and Events - calendar', and do encourage your daughters to take advantage of these amazing opportunities. One note of housekeeping: Mrs Du Preez Gale is unwell, so if you need to email Reception, particularly about absences or covid-related issues, please do so at info@st-teresas.com. We will be glad to assist you. On Monday, we launch the school's value of Character, which will be our focus for the year. A special assembly is being planned! I do hope that you all have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane

OPEN MORNING May we remind you that we have our Open Morning on Saturday 25th September and the whole school is in attendance. Could the girls please arrive at 10.30am so that they may register in their form rooms (with their classes), the girls will be ready for collection at 12.30pm. Girls will be allocated to assist in a subject area for the morning. Parents of girls in years 8,9 and 13 have been emailed with details as they will be taking prospective parents on tours.

BOARDING NEWS This week in Boarding, we all competed to be the Gold Rush champion, answering questions on the Boarders’ Handbook and stealing each other’s gold! This was followed by a fast and furious Battle Royale championship, where we were pitted against each other to see who could answer correctly in the shortest time!

We’re delighted that our boarding family continues to grow and we welcomed new flexi-boarders this week to our beautiful rooms. They had a great time with lots of laughter! They arrived just in time to celebrate Afiyin’s birthday with cake both in the dining room and sent from home! This weekend we’re looking forward to visiting Brighton with the majority of our boarders and making some more great memories.

An email was sent this week to all pupils regarding all of the details about auditions, audition pieces, sign up sheets etc. Please see lunchtime clubs and activities timetable below:

SIXTH FORM NEWS On Saturday 11th September we opened the school doors to members of the public for the annual Heritage day, we welcomed in 42 people. The tour of the school included Dr McShane’s office, the staff dining hall, pointing out the underfloor extensive cellars that used to be used as a air raid shelter, the spice cupboard, old clocktower and courtyard where the stables were and the Georgian ice house next to the pet graveyard. It was a nice opportunity for some of the girls who were touring round to learn a bit more of the history of the school. Last term many of the girls from all year groups were involved in the growing of vegetables in our own greenhouse. This week we harvested our first crop of our potatoes, carrots, chillies, runner beans and squash. Our seasonal produce has been dropped off in the kitchen for the boarders to enjoy over the weekend.

On Thursday evening we had our sixth form open evening which gave the year 11’s the opportunity to look around the amazing Felstead centre and meet the subject teachers of our 24 different a level options. We had Louise one of our medical university applicants who spoke to parents about the medicine pathway and shared her experience. Saskia, one of our Oxbridge students spoke to parents about the pathway suited to those aspiring to Oxford and Cambridge ad finally the Head Girl Team were present, we all found it really enjoyable to meet the Year 11 parents and show off how much we love St Teresa’s. Imogen Lawford, Deputy Head Girl

CHOIR TOUR TO SICILY—POSTPONED It has become apparent that entry for pupils of school-going age into Italy currently involves a 5-day isolation period. No doubt the situation will change during the next few months, but at present there is much uncertainty around travelling to Sicily. Regretfully, the School has taken the decision to postpone the proposed choir tour to Sicily. I am very sorry about this decision, as I know that all the girls were very excited about the prospect of singing on the tour. The Accounts Department will make full refunds. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions. Tim Caister, Director of Music

We’ve loved seeing you all back this week for our first week of lessons for the school term! You may have noticed that the new horses Sandy and Mouse have joined the other ponies in the barn this week. Please make sure that you’re nice and quiet if you want to say hello as they are still settling in and Mouse, the bay mare on the window side, in particular is still quite nervous.

Over the next week could our termly riders, who haven’t already been asked, come 5-10 minutes early to their lessons so that we can record what they’d like to aim for in their lessons for this coming term.

We are running another After School Club on Tuesdays at 4pm to 5pm for Prep students and have three spaces left. The club allows students to learn how to care for a pony and topics such as parts of the horse, feeding, grooming and more! If you would like to book on, please contact the office. We will see you all next week, have a lovely weekend!

This Week It is significant that the disciples of Jesus asked him how they should pray. Their question is often the same as ours as we try to make good use of those periods of quiet time that we are able to find in our busy day. Fortunately, Jesus gives us a clear and profound answer in the words know to untold millions around the world as the Our Father, the Lord’s Prayer. While volumes could be written on the significance of this prayer, perhaps there are two important messages that we can remember. Firstly, we need to remember that Jesus’ experience of his heavenly Father was unlike that that had ever been shared before. While all other religions, ancient and modern present an image of a distant, remote God, Jesus demonstrates that his heavenly Father is the total opposite. Indeed, the way that Jesus addresses God is in the most intimate terms. The word we translate as ‘Father’ in Aramaic appears as ‘Abba’ It is, in fact, much more like that very first utterance that a baby makes and would more accurately be translated as ‘Daddy’. The heavenly Father Jesus knows, and wants us to come to know, is an all-loving, compassionate Father who we can address in the most intimate of ways.

A second point refers to the language that we use throughout the remainder of the prayer. References to ‘thy’ suggest a somewhat antiquated style of language, out of date with what we imagine to be more enlightened times. Of course linguists would remind us that while other languages preserve both the more formal pronoun,’ for example ‘vous’ in French for elders, authority figures and those we are not familiar with, and the more intimate form, again, in French, ‘tu’, for those who we know well and have a close relationship with, in English we are today restricted with just the one word. The prayer we use retains the old, intimate version of ‘thy’ to reinforce the closeness that we are invited to participate in, a closeness that Jesus himself experienced. Perhaps, as we pray those words of Jesus, we too can come to know that closeness with our heavenly Father.
