SIXTH FORM NEWS

Hello and welcome to a new Sixth Form entry for the Weekly Bulletin!

This week in the Sixth Form, we held our first Student Council meeting since the summer break – it was so great to see the representatives from the lower school in our meeting and to speak to them again. I’m looking forward to helping them to make sure that their voices, and the student voices of all the students at St Teresa’s, is heard within the school community again this year. We also welcomed our two new year 7 representatives, Ruby G and Kaiah C. Well done girls!

The new academic year has also brought a new sport to our Sixth Form Sport lessons: Lacrosse! Many were very excited at the opportunity to learn this new sport, alongside others offered, including Yoga: Animal Flow, Netball, Gym and Hockey.

Wednesday saw the presentation of a Year 11 ‘Life in the Sixth Form’ assembly, presented by our prefects Beth DT, Corellia W and Poppy M. They talked about what it is like taking scholarship exams, having driving lessons during the school day, doing a TEFL course and more. We hope the Year 11s found this insight into Sixth Form life helpful.

The Year 13 A Level Biology students went on a field trip to Juniper Hall in Dorking on Wednesday. Emily E wrote: “We spent the morning carrying out practical fieldwork on Mickleham Downs, observing the landscape and measuring how a variety of different factors changed along a line transect, including plant types and soil depth. We spent the rest of the day consolidating the knowledge we had learnt and finding correlations and patterns within the data and representing this graphically. Overall, we had a great time and look forward to applying the learnings back at school.” Emily

On Thursday, the Head Girl Team along with various prefects launched our Opportunities Assembly for Year 12. Our Head Girl, Jadwiga KL said: “Members of Year 13 delivered the Opportunities assembly to Year 12 giving them a chance to apply for positions of responsibility within the school. There are a variety of roles on offer including co-editor of our Sixth Form MODE magazine, Mental Health Ambassador and member of Events Committee for Sixth Form. As well as valuable experience and useful skills that will undoubtedly be used in the world of work, this is a chance to get involved with the school and have some fun. Good luck to all those Year 12s who choose to apply – we look forward to reading your applications!” Jadwiga

And finally, the Sixth Formers are excited to tour prospective students and parents around our beautiful school campus at the Open Morning this Saturday. We hope to inspire many young people in choosing to come to St Teresa’s next year.

That is it for this week, I hope all you have a wonderful week ahead!

BOARDING NEWS

The past week in boarding has been a busy one, we had 3 Birthdays to celebrate, Afiyin, Inés and Vanessa. Happy Birthday Girls!

Over the weekend the girls went on a very exciting trip to Thorpe Park and got to enjoy all sorts of fun rides. Some girls took part in a cookery class with Mrs Linaker in the food preparation room making some very delicious cheesy scones.

This term we are teaching the girls life skills, so far, they have learnt to use the laundry room and kitchen appliances.

We spent a few afternoons creating pretty decorations for the girl's new rooms to make them feel more personalised.

It is St Teresa’s Open Morning this weekend and the girls are looking forward to showing off their boarding house.

E-SAFETY WEEK

We welcomed Karl Hopwood, an independent e-safety expert, to share his insights on online safety at both St Teresa’s and Cranmore this week.

This Week

It is unquestionably the case that we are all too often bombarded on social media by so called ‘affirmations’, with dubious provenance and, often, still more dubious content! As part of an occasional series in Chapel this year, we will be looking at key messages that scripture has for us, particularly in terms of our relationship with God.

This week we reflected on what type of relationship Jesus invites into with His heavenly Father. He points out (John 15:16) to His disciples that instead of the Master - Servant relationship that they expected, he calls us into an intimate friendship. He explains that the very same close relationship that He has with His Father is precisely the same relationship that we are offered, if we choose to accept it. ‘I have chosen you and I call you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have learned from my Father.’

The very same qualities that we look for in any earthly friend are the same qualities that God offers to us. But, like any earthly relationship, we need to spend time nurturing that relationship. The offer is always there - but we are called to respond. We call this response ‘prayer’ and, to assist us, we suggested a simple model.

1. Be alert - Set aside time - just a few moments is a good start, and then recognise that you are in God’s presence

2. Be present - share with God how you are today; share with him your feelings and experiences

3. Say ‘Thank you’ - recognise all that you have reason to be grateful for

4. Ask - dare to express your desires, knowing that no request goes unanswered (although it may not be the answer you were expecting.

5. Listen - finally, be bold enough to receive God’s response. Recognise in the busyness of our thoughts and feelings, that God calls us gentle towards the way that is peace

At the beginning of this school year, let us commit to spending a few moments to respond to God’s amazing offer of friendship!

We hope that you have had a good week.

There will be a couple of new equine faces up at equestrian. Mr T is a chestnut horse who arrived on Friday 15th and is still settling in. He has been moved up to the barn with the others after being stabled down the bottom stables with King for a few days. He is friendly, but can get a bit nippy so please be aware of this behaviour if you do say hello. Cookie will be joining us on Monday 25th, she is a skewbald pony who will go down the bottom stables for a few days while she settles in. She is very sweet, but will not be introduced to anyone until she joins the other horses in the barn, as we need to ensure she is happy and comfortable first.

As the weather has been very unpredictable in recent weeks, please can you make sure your child comes dressed appropriately to their lessons. Please pack a jumper and waterproof coat. Hoodies should not be worn, and if they are we will ask to tuck the hoods in before being around the horses.

And If your child cannot attend one of their lessons, then please let the office know by phone or by email, or the lesson can be cancelled on the booking site. As if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit.

Topic of the week: the Farrier

The farrier has to come every 4-6 weeks to shoe your horse, depending on whether your horse has shoes or not. This is necessary as the farrier needs to trim their feet to ensure that they don’t get too long, which can disrupt the horse’s balance. It is also important to check that your horse's feet are healthy and that there are no abscesses or anything else that might make them uncomfortable. Wearing shoes help to protect the horse's feet, especially on the roads and on stony ground, but it is not necessary and it also depends on the horse.

We wish the team and individuals the best of luck at their next competition!
