Autumn Term
26 APRIL 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, Today I had the pleasure of attending our Year 7 Floreat Festival, the culmination of two terms' work on their Floreat Projects. It is a lovely aspect of our timetable that each member of Year 7 attends a weekly Enrichment lesson, where they select a project, conduct research, decide on the quality of their sources, produce a presentation and present to their peers. Although we have been robbed this year of the opportunity to invite parents to the festival, we nevertheless created space for the girls to show their projects over the course of this morning. I was amazed at the breadth of interests, from Motocross to the Moon. I congratulate all the girls in Year 7 for providing us with such a memorable morning. I would like to thank my Enrichment groups in particular for doing so many food-based topics and reaping the home-cooked benefits! I would like to wish the best of luck to Year 11 and Year 13 as they approach their assessments next week. All shall be well. A quick reminder that Miss Nelson and I will be running a Parent Q&A about Teacher Assessed Grades on Wednesday at 5.30pm on Teams, the details of which were circulated by Mrs Du Preez Gale last week. We look forward to seeing you then. It really does feel as though we are moving towards normality, and plans are underway to allow certain year groups (in KS3 in particular) to travel to the Art and Science blocks in the coming weeks, once restrictions have loosened a bit further and we have gained space previously occupied by Years 11 and 13. O brave new world! Finally, it is a Bank Holiday weekend (as I'm sure you are all aware - although it came as pleasant news to one member of my A Level Latin class), so I do hope you enjoy it. A day of fun activities has been planned for the boarders, including the arrival of an ice cream van at 2pm. I wish you all a very pleasant long weekend, Dr Claire McShane
ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Our winner of this week’s art competition is Corellia in Year 8 and her depiction of Jekyll and Hyde Please do send your entries to n.menzies@st-teresas.com
BOARDING NEWS Last weekend our Year 10 Boarders took part in their Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition. They had an incredible time discovering all our local walking paths. The girls arrived back and put their feet up on a beanbag outside. It was such delightful weather to sit outside! Whilst the year 10 girls were out walking, the younger boarders made pizzas, cornish pasties, and apple muffins which were eaten very quickly. On Saturday evening, Miss Mentz took the girls swimming in the evening which was such a lovely way to end an action-packed day. This weekend the girls are looking forward to going shopping in Guildford, for the first time in ages!
ENRICHMENT SOCIETY
Over the past two weeks, Enrichment Society has been chaired by the irrepressible Year 12. Last week, Ella M delivered a fantastic presentation entitled ‘Intention in Music’, looking at creative intention, and why it is fundamental to music making.
On Thursday, Tilly J-S and Lara A presented their research on ‘Women in Shakespeare’s Tragedies’, examining how his heroines (Desdemona, Ophelia, Cordelia and Lady Macbeth) developed unique strengths, personalities, and intellects, which dared to rival their male counterparts!
Huge thanks to Mr Caister (Director of Music) and Mrs McGrath (Head of English) for their support. For those of you who missed the presentations, both recordings are available to watch on the Enrichment Society Team. A reminder that Academic Scholars should aim to attend 3 EnSoc sessions each term. Next week will be the turn of Year 7, who will deliver presentations that they prepared as part of the ‘Renaissance Girl’ projects.
BIOLOGY SOCIETY In Biology society this week we modelled how epigenetic changes switch on and off genes when cells differentiate, using marshmallows and strawberry laces.

Dear FOST, Thank you so much for the amazing picnic blankets and outdoor storage boxes you have purchased for the KS3 and KS4 girls. Last Monday we launched the picnic blankets to the whole school in our assembly; we made sure that we expressed the importance of looking after the blankets and making sure they are kept in the outdoor storage boxes, we also showed the girls how to fold them away after they have finished using them to ensure they stay in excellent condition. After the launch on Monday morning I had a walk around at lunchtime and I have attached some pictures of the girls outside enjoying their new seating areas. From the smiles on the girls’ faces it is clear that they are very grateful and appreciative of these new accessories. This is just the start of the nice weather and I am sure the girls will get a lot more use out of them in the summer months. After the year we have had, with lots of time spent at home, it is lovely to see the girls outside socialising with their friends. So on behalf of all of KS3, KS4 and the Head Girl Team: THANK YOU FOST
This Week In Chapel this week we recalled one of the most memorable of the Resurrection appearances of Jesus on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). We were encouraged to enter into the account and to take the place of the unnamed disciple. We can only speculate why the two disciples were fleeing Jerusalem - disappointment, anxiety and fear seem the most likely. Just like us, when the going gets tough, rather than ‘get going’, we run in the very opposite direction. They explain to the mysterious traveller who joins them on the journey, that all of their hopes and dreams had been shattered with the crucifixion of Jesus. It was as if all their expectations had died on the cross with Jesus. The only glimmer of hope is to be found in disturbing rumours of ‘empty tombs’, ‘blinding lights’ and talk of resurrection - as puzzling a concept two thousand years ago as it is today. Ironically, they ask, ‘Are you the only person who does not know what has been going on?’ when in reality, they stand in the presence of the one person who really does know what has been happening, and who, with good humour, gentleness and persistence, removes the veil from their eyes. And finally, having travelled through the fog of doubt, they come to that moment of realisation when their companion (literally meaning, ‘the one who shares break’ with them) removes their fear and fills them with the fire of faith that compels them to return to Jerusalem and share the good news of their experience of the resurrection with their sisters and brothers. May we be like them and recognise Jesus, our companion, in every step of our journey through life.
