Autumn Term
3 MAY 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, I doff my cap to all those in Years 11 and 13 who have just undertaken a week of assessments with such good humour and good grace. My enormous thanks to all teachers, Heads of Department and in particular Examinations Officer extraordinaire Miss Nelson, who are working exceptionally hard to ensure this is as smooth a process as possible. My especial thanks also to Mr O'Farrell who has been at school at the crack of dawn each day to invigilate via Teams our girls who are still overseas and in different time zones. This is an international-scale event! As I write, I am looking at the whiteboard and two exam desks that have been moved into my office to ensure that we can accommodate the needs of all girls, in bubbles, in all possible areas of the school. Miss Nelson for PM. In my weekly Head Girl Team meeting I was delighted to hear that Year 7 have been green-fingered and have planted tomatoes and peppers in the school greenhouse. Imogen L, our Deputy Head Girl, has managed to get a group of keen gardeners together in bubbles, and Year 8 will be planting theirs next week, and so on, until all years have their own seedlings to look after. A watering rota has been set up. Let battle commence! We all look forward to reaping (literally) the benefits of this venture, and our chef, Gary, will be anticipating the produce. Finally, on the Bank Holiday, it was lovely to see Twinkle and Sonny visit the boarders. After a slap-up breakfast of poached eggs, boarders' activities included rounders, a gymnastics session, and finally a visit from an ice cream van. Ice creams were enjoyed in the traditional May Bank Holiday weather of horizontal rain. Unfortunately, the rain put a dampener on the evening's planned campfire and roasted marshmallows, but fingers crossed this will go ahead at the weekend. My thanks to Miss Mentz and her team for organising such a fun day. I wish you all a pleasant weekend. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane
ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Our winner of this week’s art competition is Lily S in Year 8. Please do send your entries to n.menzies@st-teresas.com
BOARDING NEWS Summer is coming... The boarders enjoyed another action-packed weekend which included their first shopping trip to Guildford. They really enjoyed getting off the hill to shop and buy goodies in person again. Later that day the girls expanded their cooking skills by making freshly baked sausage rolls with Miss Mentz, followed by a late evening swim. On Sunday they attended the local parish. Our boarders had a fun Bank Holiday Monday starting off with a lie-in and breakfast. The afternoon consisted of a game of rounders, a visit from some of our resident horses and an ice cream van travelled up the hill to deliver ice creams for everyone. Next week we are heading to Thorpe Park and on Sunday we are planning a campfire with S’mores.
SPORTS NEWS Sixth Form v Staff Netball - After weeks of trying the Sixth Form team finally gained a win! Vicky B played incredibly, as always and it was lovely to see some new faces join the ranks! Well done. We look forward to the rematch next Friday.
CRICKET NEWS We are delighted to say that we will soon be welcoming a few select schools for fixtures next half term! Cricket and Rounders matches are booked in with Manor House and we cannot wait to get started! Sadly, spectators are not permitted, nor are our wonderful Harrison’s match teas, however, we are still very grateful for some friendly competition! Please keep an eye out for upcoming fixtures on SOCs and please will you let the PE department know if you are attending any club training outside of school so we can celebrate your successes. SOCS is a sports portal where parents will be able to access our sporting fixtures, events and competitions, as well as team sheets for matches. As covid restrictions begin to lift we are looking forward to welcoming our opposition back for some great fixtures. SOCS is our main source of advertising our sporting calendar so please use this as your source of information. Fixtures and training will be displayed half a term in advance where possible, whereas team sheets will be advertised a week in advance. The website can be found linked to the St Teresa’s home page by clicking ‘senior’ and then ‘sport’. TENNIS NEWS Surrey Schools Summer League restarts this term, with our first matches against Guildford High, Caterham, Coloma and St Catherine’s. All details can be found on SOCs, and team sheets will be advertised by the end of the week. Unfortunately, whilst covid-19 restrictions are in place we are not allowed supporters yet. For all away fixtures the players will return to St Teresa's on the minibus and collected back at St Teresa’s, to comply with Covid policies for our opposition. The team has qualified for the Grass Roots Regional Championships!! In the 70cm class, following in the footsteps of the previous team, everyone rode brilliantly with Lulu coming 3rd, Sofie coming 8th and Lottie coming 9th individually for the whole team to win the class! This Week May is traditionally the month when we reflect on the role that Mary played in God’s plan to save his people. In Chapel we reflected on the Biblical account of the Annunciation—that moment when God, through his messenger Gabriel, shared the news that Mary was to bear a son, Jesus, who would be the saviour. John Collier’s contemporary image of the Annunciation (right) challenges us to engage with the event by faithfully presenting the Biblical scene, but re-imagining it in a contemporary context. We can only imagine the thoughts that must have gone through her head as she reacted in exactly the way we might expect on hearing such astonishing news. However, this did not stop her in her response to God’s request. Despite her fears and her concerns, she answered with a clear ‘Yes’ to God’s request. ‘Behold! I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done unto me according to thy word!’ Mary is the greatest example of faith that we have and we are encouraged to think about her simple ‘Yes’ to God and, in our turn, to say the same. Every day God will call us and ask us to be the one who will bring the presence of Jesus into our world - through acts of kindness, words of gentleness and true signs of love. We ask that we will be given the courage and will to do the same. While we never pray to Mary in the way that we do to God, we do believe that Mary is living the life of the resurrection in heaven, and in confidence and hope we can pray, ’Hail Mary . . .’
