I am writing to draw your attention to two wonderful events being planned by FOST. Firstly, the Jubilee Party on Friday 27th May, from 4pm-6pm. There will be a range of games and activities on the field (including, I very much hope, welly wanging), a ceilidh, Union Jack cake courtesy of Bev, Pimms and generally the air of a lovely village fete. Let us acknowledge together the tremendous service of Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee. Secondly, the FOST Ball will take place on Saturday 25th June at Denbies. It promises to be a wonderful occasion, and the first time we have had a ball since the pandemic struck. Please do book a ticket; full details are available via FOST. Finally, just a quick note to inform you that I will be undergoing surgery on Wednesday 18th May, and I have been advised that I will need to take it easy for a fortnight. I'm extremely sorry to be away from school, but I hope that it won't take long to be on my feet; I will certainly be calling the ceilidh at the Jubilee party! I anticipate being back on email w/c 23rd, and Mr O'Farrell will more than capably deputise in my absence. My sincere thanks to the SLT for their marvellous support. I do hope you all have a lovely weekend. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane
BOARDING NEWS Last weekend we took a large group of girls to the hidden location of the Guildford Escape Rooms, Paradox Parlour. Located at the top of Guildford High Street, it was very mysterious and reminded us of Diagon Alley! The girls had fun in groups working out clues to open a hidden door to lead us to more surprises. With seconds to go you could hear the girls screaming with excitement as they made it out - Phew! After all that fun we shopped in the High Street and found a craft fair to visit for free. On Sunday the girls went to Guildford again but this time to watch Dr Strange at the cinema. We are looking forward to this weekend’s trip to London, which is the girls’ favourite place to go, and then swimming in the evening back at school. Mrs Wragg Deputy Head of Boarding

YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP TO DORSET The 31 Year 10 Geography students went on a fieldtrip to Dorset from Wednesday 27-Friday 29 April. They were accompanied by the three members of the Geography Department - Ms Hobkinson, Mrs Bird and Mr Clark. The students completed the required fieldwork component for their course. For the human investigation they visited two contrasting areas within Weymouth and for their physical investigation they visited three locations along the River Wey. The students were also able to visit a variety of coastal locations on the journeys to and from Dorset, along the Hampshire and Dorset coastline, to review their learning related to the Coastal Environments topic. The students worked hard during the day, and then in the classroom in the evenings, before enjoying some sports recreation and downtime at the PGL centre in Osmington Bay. Ms Hobkinson, Head of Geography
YOUNG POTTER IN THE MAKING Darcey B in Year 8, sold some of her amazing pottery at a recent FOST Coffee Morning; there were some lovely pieces available to purchase.
IT’S FRIDAY, QUIZ TIME... So things are hotting up – and it’s not just the weather. With the sun outside, the real heat is coming from the fierce battle for the titles of QUIZZY WHIZZY HOUSE OF THE SUMMER and DASTARDLY MASTERLY YEAR GROUP OF THE SUMMER.
The thing you need to remember of course is that with 5 points for the well-being question and a total of 12 available for the last three questions which pretend to be hard – it only takes a couple of participants to take these on to really push your averages up….. SIXTH FORM NEWS We have had another busy week in the Sixth Form, as the Year 13’s continue to prepare for their upcoming A Level exams, and the Year 12’s have started to revise for their end of year exams. In the Lecture Theatre on Tuesday lunchtime, the Oxbridge Faculty Exploration Series continued for Key Stage 4 and 5 Students. This week it was the turn of the Humanities Faculty, the second of three in the series. It was led by Dr Poffley, the guest speaker was Dr McShane. We learnt about Dr McShane’s interview process when she applied to Oxford University and her experience as a whole there, as an English Literature undergraduate. It was really interesting to learn about the courses she took and why she chose to do each one. The seminar particularly focused on studying humanities at Oxbridge, telling us about the differences between the two Universities and how they contrast with one another. On Tuesday during Year 12’s Careers lesson, we looked at Undergraduate University courses and compared the modules from different Universities. This gave us a great insight into why choosing the right course and the right University is important. This also helped us prepare for Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 May when we will have our Higher Education Event, when we begin our university applications! During Periods 1 and 2 on Wednesday, the whole school had their Pastoral Check Ins. One Year 12 Prefect was allocated a year group in the school to support with the check ins, and spend time with them for the duration of the morning. I was supporting Year 10, who were practicing new revision techniques for their upcoming End of Year Exams after Half Term, in between having their one-to-one check ins. I joined in a game with some of the girls who were doing a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ Quiz! It was lovely for the Prefects to be able to chat and spend time with all the Year Groups within our School Community. Meanwhile, in the Sixth Form Centre, the Head Girl Team organised for us all to have breakfast during the Sixth Form pastoral check ins, consisting of Pastries and Cinnamon Buns. It was a delicious treat for everyone to have in between studying for our upcoming exams.
During Form Time on Thursday, the Year 13 students made butterfly decorations for their Leavers’ Liturgy Dinner next Thursday. They are all excited for this event next week, before their last day on Friday 20th May when they go on Study Leave. On Friday morning, Miss Pitchford delivered an assembly to the Year 10 students informing them about their Day in the Life event this term in the Sixth Form Centre; this is coming up soon, in June. The event gives them the opportunity to be a sixth form student for the day; they will be able to go to Sixth Form lessons and have a taste of what life is like here in the Sixth Form with us. Year 12 students who are a buddy to Year 7 form groups went to the Year 7 form rooms for their buddy session this Friday morning, before lessons began. They all played fun games such as hangman, charades, and wink murder. Year 7 Buddy Sessions occur every other Friday and the Year 7 girls love the Sixth Formers coming to their Forms to have a bit of fun before the weekend begins! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to updating you about what went on in the Sixth Form next week! Emma W (Deputy Head Girl)

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS Year 10 Dance Trip to Middlesex University The GCSE dancers enjoyed visiting Middlesex University, to discover more about Dance at Higher Education. They were inspired by the contemporary dance pieces, both in the theatre and site-sensitive. The girls are now looking forward to taking their creative ideas back into the studio! Year 7 Drama Festival Year 7 enjoyed performing their final pieces for the Year 7 Drama Festival. The play scripts were written by members of the form and then exchanged with other groups in their form. Year 7 not only had the opportunity to perform a new and original play, they were able to see their own play scripts being performed. We hope that you all have had a good week! We realised that we forgot to publish the results from the Inter House Dressage we ran at the end of the Spring Term! Please see the results at the bottom of the page.
Not much has happened this week at STE, so it’s been pretty relaxed. The ponies have now been out in the summer fields without rugs and have been rolling about and have been getting very muddy! During the weekly lessons, some of the riders have been going on hacks around the onsite hacking track. And the staff have been going out on hacks too! Everyone has been enjoying it! The pony of the week this week is… Diesel! ~ Libby C
Inter House Dressage Competition After four days of riding followed by a team quiz on the week of the 28th March, we are pleased to announce that… Francis came in 1st place! With Chelsea B, Angelina J, Hanna K and Penelope B competing for their house. Ignatius came in 2nd! Holly C, Connie C, Eva J and Gemma M rode for Ignatius. Dominic came in 3rd! Sophie F, Minty W and Phoebe W rode for their house. And Benedict came in 4th! With Isobel C, Pascale W, Saskia M and Poppy O rode for Benedict. Congratulations to everyone who participated and those who stayed for the quiz as well! We look forward to running this again next year!
This Week In our third week reflecting on the characters who meet Jesus after the resurrection, we finally came to one of the most compelling—Thomas. Like the other characters we have met - Mary of Magdala and Cleopas - Thomas, along with the remainder of the disciples, lived in abject fear that they too would soon face the same fate as Jesus. While the large group of the disciples, in their collective fear, huddled together in the upper room, Thomas seems to have literally run to the hills and was nowhere to be seen when Jesus visited. Of course, Thomas can all too easily be remembered for his response when finally he steps over the threshold and returns. In a response so reminiscent of those who suggest that only an empirical experience will validate the claims of the disciples that they had seen the risen Lord, Thomas unequivocally expresses his incredulity. As such, Thomas is a great model for us. Thomas is the honest response to the illusion that people of faith have all the answers and live in a state of permanent confidence. Instead, most of us are like Thomas, with our doubts and questions. What is significant with Thomas is that he did return, he did step over that threshold. God, who is always present in our lives, never forces Himself upon us. But he does wait on our response, however wavering. At that moment, He can re-establish the loving relationship that He always desires and transforms the situation. There is a certain injustice that this familiar character has, for over 2,000 years, been given the title ‘Doubting Thomas’, when in reality he is really remembered for his great faith as he declares ‘My Lord and my God!’
The disciples all feared that they would face the same fate as Jesus. The irony is, of course, that in many ways they did. Certainly they faced difficulties, in many instances, martyrdom, yet they, like us, are also invited to that eternal life that Jesus has now made available to us all!
