HISTORY RE-ENACTMENT On Monday morning,Year 7 recreated the Battle of Hastings after researching the design of Saxon and Norman weapons and making their own swords and shields! The poor weather meant we were forced into the sports hall but, due to the imagination of the PE department, we were still able to construct the hill on which the Saxons stood on the morning of the 14th of October 1066. The girls learnt about the mistakes made by the Saxons during the Battle of Hastings as well as the clever tactics used by William the Conqueror. The girls played the part magnificently! Year 7 will use this newfound knowledge to help them with their first assessment of the year as they write about the reasons for William the Conqueror's victory.

SIXTH FORM NEWS This week marked us reaching half way through our first term in the Sixth Form. Year 13 UCAS predicted grades and Academic References were added to Unifrog and university choices are starting to be confirmed for Year 13 students, and Year 12 students applied for some new leadership roles and continued to get settled into their new learning environment. We were also very pleased to confirm this week that we will have a weekly visit from ‘The Rolling Cafe’, a local coffee van who will visit the Sixth Form students and staff; everyone loves a coffee and, as the winter temperatures draw in, it is the perfect time for this new addition to our Sixth Form. We are looking forward to having warm seasonal coffees and hot drinks with an added snack to complement!
On Monday Mrs Eleftheriou delivered our whole school assembly to kick off the start of Modern Foreign Languages week, where we listened to a recording of members of staff and support staff who spoke a different language and a follow up quiz was sent around with the chance to guess the teacher and language. There has also been a range of European food options available at lunch time including; boeuf a la bourguignonne, avenue pain croustillant, bravas espanolas de pollo y patata and schweineschnitzel in pilzsauce. On Thursday there was a European tuck shop with churros, berliners and croissants which was very popular and tasty! In PSHCE on Thursday the Sixth Form spent the hour listening to a perfectionist talk with Chris Ward. He is a successful entrepreneur and creative director of Comic Relief, and Chris Ward spoke about his book ‘Less Perfect, More Happy’ where he focuses on an honest and open description of how perfectionism has impacted the lives of people and set a blueprint for a happier path. In the podcast it was explained that perfectionism is a mental health disorder affecting 5% of the population. It was discussed why perfectionism develops, what parents and educators can do about it and the consequences it can have on mental health if it is not kept under control. Best wishes, Imogen L Deputy Head Girl On Saturday, Charlotte W, Connie M, Louise B and I competed at the ESSA swimming competition at Guildford Spectrum. It was a tough competition; however, we all swam exceptionally well, resulting in us coming second in the Medley Relay. We hope this will be enough to enable us to get through to the National Finals. YEAR 11 ART TRIP TO KEW GARDENS
This week, Year 11 GCSE Fine Art, Photography and Textile students had an amazing opportunity to go on an art trip to Kew Gardens! We had a wonderful day there and really appreciated the time that we were able to spend focusing upon our studies and looking at these interesting plants and structures firsthand. It was a great opportunity to collect research and enjoy the beautiful grounds of Kew Gardens, with over 50,000 different plants throughout the gardens, there was lots of choice to draw from! Some girls also chose to study the architecture in the glass houses, taking in everything the Royal Botanical Gardens had to offer. We all congregated at the buses and set off to Kew Gardens, and after arriving at Kew we headed straight to the Palm House, which inhabited many varieties of plants with intricate structures for all of us to study. We had the opportunity to carry out experiments, linear drawings and explored a range media. Then we stopped for lunch on the benches with a view of the beautiful gardens. In the afternoon we looked at the succulents and tropical plants in a second glass house where the art teachers gave us one to one tutorials to help us improve our studies. Furthermore, this trip presented many opportunities for the photography students and allowed us to photograph many different structures and forms.
All of the GCSE art students felt very fortunate to be offered the opportunity to go on this trip especially after the pandemic. I would like to say thank you on behalf of the students to the teachers and the school for organising this day trip for us, as it enabled us to further develop our skills using different techniques and drawing approaches from first-hand sources. By Emily P (GCSE Fine Art student) and Neve S (GCSE Photography & Textile student)
