Autumn Term
10 MAY 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, It has been lovely to see Mairlot Hall being used as a stage once again, and I am very much looking forward to The Show Must Go On. Discrete plays have been rehearsed in bubbles, then stopped, then restarted, then stopped, then restarted and are now finally going to be filmed. Break a leg to the production casts, and my thanks to Ms Hansen and Mr Melvin for their determination to put on multiple plays in the teeth of a pandemic. I am also looking forward to the Summer Concert where this week the filming of diverse items has busily been taking place, and the concert itself will be on Teams from 7pm on Wednesday of next. Choral Evensong is on Monday at 5.30pm (via Teams for parents), the Head Girls' Tea is on Tuesday at 4.30pm, and to round off a jam-packed week, I look forward to the virtual Academic Scholars' Dinner on Teams on Thursday for Years 9 and 10. Is that the beginnings of normality I scent in the air? We have so missed the anticipation of opening night, the camaraderie of live music and the thrill of watching sports fixtures. Soon. Gardening club update: Year 8's carrots and potatoes are in! The very best of luck to Years 11 and 13 as they embark on the last week of assessments; courage! I must say that they have done you, as parents, extremely proud these last few weeks. Thanks, as ever, to all teaching staff. As you will be aware, guidelines are relaxing from Monday and the wearing of masks is no longer 'strongly encouraged', but will still be required (barring exemptions) on the school buses. If any pupil still wishes to wear a mask in school, then of course, they are perfectly welcome to do so. I do hope you have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane
ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Our winner of this week’s art competition is Gabriella in Year 7. Please do send your entries to n.menzies@st-teresas.com
BOARDING NEWS On Saturday, the weather looked pretty grey and rainy however, we were lucky that the rain stopped as we arrived at Thorpe Park. The girls enjoyed the fast rides and the fast-food! On Sunday, Ms Walton took the girls to Mass and Miss Mentz made pizzas with the girls. The girls were taught how to make the dough from scratch. In the evening everyone was invited to make s’mores over the BBQ at Magdalen House, it was lovely to see all the boarders enjoy some well-deserved time together after all their revision and exams this week. Well done girls! Next weekend we will be taking the girls shopping to Guildford and having afternoon tea with the Boarding staff.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK In aid of Mental Health Awareness week our school week started with an assembly from our mental health ambassadors, a PE challenge and each class was asked to create post-it notes of mental health tips to put on display.
ENRICHMENT SOCIETY
Today at Enrichment Society, we were treated to two presentations from our Year 7 Renaissance Girls, who were charged with presenting on a topic they are passionate about. Molly S gave an insightful presentation on the culture and history of skateboarding, how the sport developed, some skate charities and her own skate-idol, Sky Brown. Gabriella D presented on her own brood of chickens, how good they are as pets, and the importance of the pecking order, as observed in her own chickens! Well done, girls!
If any parents, guardians, or other family members, are interested in delivering a talk at Enrichment Society via TEAMS during the year, please email Mr O’Farrell on j.ofarrell@stteresas.com. All areas of interest and expertise are welcome!
BOB CHAMPION’S WALK FOR CANCER TRUST Well done to Chloe CB in year 7 and her younger sister Amber who are taking part in the Shetland Pony Grand National, having got through the trials back in April. A big part of their involvement in the pony club is raising money for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. This year, 40 years on from his recovery from cancer and his win at Aintree Racecourse, Bob Champion is doing an Anniversary Walk and walking 191 miles around different race courses in aid of the Trust. On Tuesday 12 May the sisters joined Bob for his walk at Coombelands Racecourse in Pulborough, West Sussex. The girls have also been selling fudge at their pony club whilst a competition was on and raised £67.50 for the Cancer Trust.
If you would like to make a donation to their Just Giving page click here. A big well done to the girls for the amazing job they are doing to raise money for the Cancer Trust.

This Week On Thursday we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus. On this day we remember the occasion when Jesus, having spent 40 days since his resurrection appearing and continuing to teach his followers, now returns to his heavenly Father. The account that we read in Chapel (Acts 1:1-11) is rich with Biblical imagery, explaining in human terms this supernatural event. For Jesus’ followers, they knew that we reached God by ascending to him. Practically, this often meant building temples and places of worship on mountains, hills and high places - the place where God was to be found. And to describe the presence of God, they used the image of clouds, like the clouds of incense that burn day and night in those places of worship as a sure sign of God’s presence. Those early followers of Jesus were in no doubt that Jesus has returned to his heavenly existence from which he had come. While on earth, living his fully human existence, Jesus allowed himself to be constrained by time and space. His ministry was necessarily limited, as we are told, to Samaria and Judaea. By returning to his heavenly place, his ministry, through the work of the Spirit and the cooperation of his followers, could begin to spread the Good News of the message of God’s love throughout the whole world. Indeed, those timid, unworthy followers would soon be transformed into courageous witnesses to that Good News with the coming of the Spirit at Pentecost (but more of that next week). For now, we recognise his call to us, as to those first followers, to recognise his presence with us always, and his challenge for us to be witnesses to that presence.
