BOARDING NEWS This week in Boarding we celebrated International Boarding Day on Saturday. The day aims to promote the importance of being eco-friendly in boarding. The girls acknowledged the impact that certain things have on our world and talked about some of the ways we reduce our impact around boarding, such as recycling rubbish and passing down unused uniform to reduce waste. Saturday afternoon the girls headed off on a trip to Kingston. The girls went searching for some winter clothes in preparation for the upcoming season, they strolled through the shopping centre and main street, with a stop for yummy hot chocolate on the way! On Sunday evening a few girls went and enjoyed a dip in the school swimming pool, a much-requested activity most weekends regardless of the weather. They had fun racing one another and playing “Marco Polo”.
SIXTH FORM NEWS Welcome to a new week of the Sixth Form bulletin entry! This week has been a hectic one for our Oxbridge and Medicine applicants as they prepare to send off their early UCAS applications. Good luck everyone! On Tuesday, we celebrated Mental Health Day, with the theme for this year being ‘Mental Health is a universal human right’. But we didn’t stop at just the one day - instead, St Teresa’s decided to extend our celebrations into a Mental Health week, offering fantastic opportunities and extracurricular activities such as Hug in a Mug, mindfulness, bulb planting and writing things that we are thankful for on paper leaves to turn into a mural. Thank you to our amazing Mental Health and Wellbeing Prefect, Aleisha A, our fantastic Pastoral Senior Prefect, Sophie R, and the Mental Health Ambassadors for organising such great events. And finally, the Head Girl team gave an assembly two weeks ago to the new Year 12 students, offering them opportunities to apply to join a number of student leadership committees that Year 13 run. This is to give Year 12 students an opportunity to gain experience of student leadership, before applying for the Whole Student Leadership Team, including the new Head Girl Team, in February 2024. A lot of applications were received this year and so there was a lot of competition for the roles available. A big congratulations to the following students who are joining the Year 13 committees, we hope that you enjoy gaining lots of experience. MODE Magazine: Run by Rose M in Year 13. We are delighted to share that Amelia SM will be the new Editor of Mode, along with Alice P as the new Assistant Editor of MODE. The team will also be joined by Emma N, as a new article contributor. The Tuck Shop: Run by the Chaplaincy Prefect, Anna B, in Year 13. Joining the very popular Friday Tuck Shop team will be Abigail B and Jessica M. In charge of all Sixth Form Fun is our Events Committee, led by the Deputy Head Girls Ariella W and Georgina S. Joining this very exciting committee are Alicia C and Evie D. Poppy M, the Sixth Form Prefect, is expanding her team to include Keri W and Saskia TV in Year 12 to assist in making sure that the Sixth Form Kitchen is stocked up with treats! The Sixth Form Duty Team is delighted to welcome Charlotte J and Keri W, who will be supporting in the Dining Room at lunchtime. Beth DT, the Lower School Prefect responsible for Year 7, is delighted to announce that the following students are all becoming Year 7 Buddies: Francesca B, Sophie Y, Zoe W, Elisa H, Emily J, Sophia J, Erin, F, Katie J and Sophie A. One of my roles as Deputy Head Girl is to run the Student Council and I am delighted to welcome Alicia A and Charlotte J as the new Student Reps for Year 12. And lastly, Aleisha A, our Mental Health and Wellbeing Prefect, is proud to present Annabelle M as a new Mental Health Ambassador. Wishing you all a great weekend! Julia T (Deputy Head Girl)
CREATIVE ARTS SCHOLARS’ DINNER The Art, Drama and Music departments organised our first Creative Arts Scholars’ Dinner! The evening started with a snap inspired “Name game” in which the girls were each given the name of a famous artist to match with their table placement. After a delicious dinner was served they moved onto a quiz – each theme corresponding with a different creative subject. Well done to the winners! Overall it was a wonderful evening of fun and inspiration, we look forward to hosting it again next year!
SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH The girls departed to the Isle of Purbeck for their silver Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition last week! They worked as a team, using their sharp navigation skills to find their way, and were rewarded with an afternoon by the sea at the end of their trip. The girls are now all fired up and ready for the real thing!
YEAR 7 ENRICHMENT Year 7 had an enrichment lesson, supported by our gardener Mr Cook.
MENTAL HEALTH WEEK This Mental Health Week a variety of activities were offered to the pupils. The greatest success was arguably the Hug in a Mug event, on Tuesday break time, where teachers and students gathered to serve hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream. Alba in Year 13 said “it was great to see everyone getting together”. We
ultimately raised a grand total of £172, which will be donated to ‘The Mix’, a youth mental health charity of the girls’ choosing. On Wednesday and Friday breaktimes, girls also had the opportunity to produce beautiful spring bulb displays in the greenhouse, with help from gardener Al. These were fun to make, and it was nice to see the different year groups coming together. On these days at lunchtime, Julia in Year 13 also helped provide a mindfulness club. It was very relaxing to follow along with the guided exercises and listen to the soothing music.
ECO COUNCIL If you would like to attend the 'One ocean' workshops run by KBR, please sign up via the link, places are limited to 24 students, so this will be on a first come first served basis. 'The extra-curricular program is run by committed and passionate KBR employees who work alongside teachers and facilitators to mentor students in gaining a deep understanding of the ocean, its interconnection with the climate and planetary health and how to regenerate that health.' The dates after half term are from 9th November, every Thursday from 13:30-14:10 until the 7th December.
NOTICES BEYOND GCSE Two ‘Beyond GCSE’ events for our Year 11 pupils are scheduled to take place during the Autumn Term. These annual events are organised by the Sixth Form staff and pupils, with the intention of supporting our Year 11 as they prepare to make their A Level subject choices in the new year. Beyond GCSE Review Meetings Our Beyond GCSE review meetings will be on offer from Monday 16th October 2023 until the end of the Autumn Term. Throughout this time, every Year 11 pupil will meet individually with a member of our Sixth Form Team. The meeting is designed to be supportive and allow us an opportunity to provide individual support and guidance for pupils and answer any questions that they have about what they intend to peruse after their GCSEs. Subject Ambassadors Event In December, Year 11 pupils will be invited to join our current Year 12 cohort for breakfast and to attend our Subject Ambassadors event. This event is run by our current Year 12s and is designed to support your daughter with the decision-making process of selecting her A Level courses. This event offers Year 11 a unique opportunity to directly speak to Year 12 pupils, ask questions that they may not have asked at Sixth Form Open Evening and to find out first hand what life is really like in the Sixth Form.
WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP PROGRAMME Pupils interested in taking part in the programme should attend the weekly meetings of the World Scholars’ Cup in More House Room 36 on Wednesdays 4:30-5:30pm. If they are interested in taking part in the competition but are unable to do this, they should speak to Ms Hobkinson or e-mail s.hobkinson@st-teresas.com The World Scholar’s Cup programme is an exciting enrichment opportunity available to all Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils across the Effingham Schools Trust. Pupils will compete in a two-day regional round to be held at St Teresa’s on Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th March 2024, and a trip will be offered for qualifying teams to attend one of the fiveday global rounds held towards the end of the summer term or during the school summer holidays. This year we are also planning to offer a trip for qualifying teams to the Tournament of Champions held in November 2024 at Yale University, New Haven, USA.
YEAR 10 ART TRIP TO KEW GARDEN Year 10 Art students have the opportunity to visit Kew Gardens on Tuesday 17 October. The visit will offer pupils the chance to collect vital first-hand research, which they will be able to use back in the classroom. We will depart at 8.50am and return by 4pm. Pupils will need to bring their sketchbooks, plus drawing equipment, including coloured pencils or pens in a small bag. An email was sent to all parents from Mrs Uren.
YEAR 13 GEOGRAPHY TRIP We are planning on taking our Year 13 pupils to the Field Studies Council (FSC) centre at Slapton Ley, Devon from Monday 13 November to Friday 17 November 2023. This is a part of the Geography A Level course, where pupils are required to complete a Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) worth 20% of their final mark. To complete their NEA, pupils are required to complete four days of fieldwork. Please send an e-mail to s.hobkinson@st-teresas.com and return the consent form emailed to you previously if you would like your daughter to participate in this trip.

We hope that you have had a good week. Both Mr T and Cookie are now in the barn with all the other ponies and have passed their license! This means that they can be used in lessons, and they will be slowly introduced to ridden lessons during the term and in the holidays. As the weather has been very unpredictable in recent weeks, please can you make sure your child comes dressed appropriately to their lessons. Please pack a jumper and waterproof coat. Hoodies should not be worn, and if they are we will ask to tuck the hoods in before being around the horses. And If your child cannot attend one of their lessons, then please let the office know by phone or by email, or the lesson can be cancelled on the booking site. As if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit.
Topic of the week: Show Jumping There are so many disciplines in horse riding, one of them is show jumping. It was first introduced to the Olympics in the 1900s in France, and quickly became more and more popular. There are different types of show jumping and one of them is ‘Chase me Charlie’. You have to jump clear (which means no refusals, faults or knocking poles down) as the jump gets progressively higher, and the one who jumps the highest clear wins.
Fun fact! Huaso the horse jumped 2.47 metres, which is the highest jump ever recorded. ~ Libby C
NSEA News We wish the team and individuals the best of luck at their next competition!
This Week For at least the past fifty years a significant feature of life at St Teresa’s has been our four House Saints - St Benedict, St Francis, St Dominic and St Ignatius. These great founders of Christian movements have guided us for decades. And so, it was a particularly significant decision to choose a suitable patron for our new fifth house. As has been widely shared, our new house patron is St Tabitha. It seems appropriate to share some information about her. Perhaps you enjoy an occasional Jaffa Cake, or recognise the particular quality of Jaffa Oranges. But perhaps you didn’t know that both these foods get their name from the ancient port of Jaffa - or Joppa as it was once called - in Israel. In the early years of the Church Tabitha, or Dorcas as she was known, lived in the town of Joppa. We read about her in the second volume of St Luke’s great writings, the Acts of the Apostles (Acts9:36– 43) where we hear that she was a widow who had a reputation for using her skills with linen and cloth to support the poor in that area. When she fell ill and then died her friends called for the assistance of St Peter who was residing nearby. In a reminder of the authority that he had been given by Jesus, and still given to the Popes and the Church to this day, and as a foretaste of the resurrection to come, Peter’s prayers raised Tabitha back to life. We give thanks for our new patron who, in this year of Faith, is a great model of faith in Christ and of the love and compassion he calls us to share.
