Sports Development Plan We are delighted to announce that our Sports Development plan will be launched in September. This will be overseen by Mr Paul Hodgson who has been appointed as Executive Director of Sport for The Effingham Trust. Mr Hodgson has two daughters who attend St Teresa’s School. He has been Director of Sport at Cranmore for three years, a role which he will combine with his new appointment. Prior to holding this position, he had a successful 17-year professional rugby career. He tallied over 170 Premiership appearances which included playing for Bristol Shoguns, London Irish and Worcester Warriors. Mr Hodgson also played for England U18s, England U21s, England 7s and was capped for the full England International side 9 times. Post playing, he held the position of Academy Head Coach at London Irish, before stepping up as the 1st team Attack and Backs coach. Alongside his rugby career, he completed a BA with First Class honours and a Masters with Distinction through Northumbria University. More recently, he completed his RFU Level 4 qualification and a PGCE with QTS (distinction). We look forward to Mr Hodgson joining the St Teresa’s team.

BOARDING NEWS The girls had a busy weekend, spending Saturday in Brighton including a tour of the Royal Pavilion, eating crepes and doughnuts on the pier, and enjoying the seaside. Year 11 also went out to celebrate the end of their mock exams. Sunday afternoon was spent baking heart shaped biscuits for Valentine's Day. This week we say goodbye to Marlene from Germany, who has been with us since September. She will be missed by our Year 10 and Year 11 girls. We all wish her well for the future and hope she will keep in touch with us. We wish all the girls a very happy half term and look forward to hearing about their holidays on our return.

WORLD BOOK DAY AUTHOR VISIT Helen Dennis or H.L. Dennis, who wrote the Secret Breakers series and the Rivers of Ink series, will be visiting St Teresa’s on Wednesday, 2nd March to talk about her writing to girls in Years 7 – 9. This visit is part of our World Book Day celebrations and as Helen is a very interesting and engaging speaker, we are very much looking forward to finding out about how Helen became an author and where she gets her inspiration. Something that readers especially enjoy about these books is that there are several recognisable nearby locations e.g. Brighton Pavilion, St Paul’s Cathedral and the River Thames which play an important part in the stories and this really brings them to life. Mrs Smith, Head of English

ST TERESA’S WEEKLY QUIZ ACCUMULATOR This week I must express gratitude to all of you who forced me to look up the myriad world map versions that reflect the true size of each landmass. There I was, feeling so smug because l have a Peters protection on my classroom wall. Doesn't life have a wonderful way of reminding us never to stop learning . To take us up to half term we have an exceptionally challenging question 6 this week - designed to catch out those of us who don't know our Disney Princesses from a hole in the wall. Dominic are still leading the House League on an average of 3.18. Still up on everyone else but a little below where they were last week. In the Year Group League it is Year 9, then Year 13 and then Year 7 - 3 cheers for them all.

Click here for this week’s quiz. Have a lovely half term, Mr Neate

A-LEVEL ART TRIP TO BRIGHTON The Art Department organised an exciting visit to Brighton in order to instigate visual research for the Year 12 and Year 13 practical investigations. Students had the opportunity to visit the Royal Pavilion and the Brighton Museum, as well as undertaking walking tours of the seafront and renowned Palace Pier. In addition, the students had a lovely time eating lunch at the amazing VIP Pizza Brighton. The students worked extremely hard and produced some excellent work. Mrs Uren, Co-Head of Art and Design

Eco Tips of the week: You may have little bags of silica gel that you don’t know what to do with. They are often added to new items, such as the lateral flow tests, to help absorb excess moisture and keep items dry. We usually toss these bags away because we think they are useless. But it turns out there are many clever uses for silica gel around the house. For example, you can use them to keep your car windows fog free and remove excess moisture from your camera lens. And if you ever drop your cell phone in water, you can try putting the phone in a container filled with silica gel packs and leave it overnight. We have had a request from a local society that are looking for some so if you have any please drop them at school in Reception.

We are incredibly proud of how hard the year representatives have worked in implementing positive changes to the school. Hopefully this will give you an insight into all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes! It has been an absolute pleasure to work with them and listen to all their ideas, so a massive thank you and well done to them. Miss Pitchford, Assistant Head, Head of Sixth Form

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS ‘Blood Brothers’ Theatre Trip On Tuesday 8 February, Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE Drama students saw the fabulous production of ‘Blood Brothers’ at the New Wimbledon Theatre. They all had a great time and enjoyed watching the production of their GCSE set text. Here are some of Year 10 enjoying the return to theatre, and their pre-theatre treats.

Year 9 ‘Noughts and Crosses’ performances Throughout the week Year 9 have been performing extracts for Malorie Blackman’s ‘Noughts and Crosses’. Having studied the play in English last term the students had an excellent understanding of the characters they were playing and this helped in creating and performing some wonderfully naturalistic characters. Mr Melvin was extremely impressed with the standard of the students’ work .

Welcome The St Teresa’s Performing Arts Department is delighted to welcome Charlotte Pepping to the department. Charlotte is one of the new gap students in boarding and has experience and training in Dance. She loves the Performing Arts and has already started a boarders’ Dance Club. We look forward to Charlotte getting involved and running some Performing Arts lunchtime clubs later in the term. Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities We have an amazing Acting Academy that runs classes at St Teresa's after school every Wednesday. They run classes in Acting and Musical Theatre and are also an agency so there are plenty of opportunities for auditions and professional work. We hope that you all have had a lovely 1st half of the Spring Term! You may have noticed that we have a couple of new ponies who are staying down in our bottom stables. Red and Bobby arrived on Saturday 5th and are taking the time to settle in to our routine. They should be out of isolation by the time we are all back to school term so you will be able to say hello to them then! We hope that Red and Bobby will become new riding school additions but before they can be used in lessons they need to gain some fitness (in the case of Bobby!) and are being ridden by our amazing staff in the meantime. If we don’t see you over the half term on our Pony Days then we look forward to seeing you all after the half term! Take care!!

February Half Term Pony Days The February dates are already fully booked! If you would like to be added to the waitlist in case of a cancellation, then please email the office or there is an update on the system where you will be emailed automatically if a space becomes available. The team are in the process of organising for the Easter holidays and will announce when those dates are published and ready to be booked on.

NSEA Competition Reports There are more NSEA competitions coming up as the competitions pick up for this year.

We have some teams and individuals heading out for both NSEA and BSJA Just for Schools in the half term. We wish you all luck!

This Week It isn’t every day that the Queen writes to you, but that is precisely what happened this week. On Sunday the Queen celebrated 70 years since her accession to the throne, the day on which she became Queen. In Chapel this week we marked this extraordinary event in the history of our countries, the commonwealth and the world. The Queen’s letter to us is filled with gratitude, particularly for the support that she has received during her reign, especially from her beloved husband, Prince Philip. And much was made of the announcement that the Duchess of Cornwall is to be known as Queen Consort when, in due course, Prince Charles becomes King. But surely the most wonderful, and humbling, element of this letter is the way the Queen ends her message, with the words, ‘Your Servant.’ It is good to remember that as a young princess, the Queen was not expected to accede to the throne. Only when her uncle abdicated and her own father became King George VI did it become clear that she too would one day be called to this role.

Even as a child she recognised her role as servant, perhaps best shown through the compassionate broadcast that she and her sister, Princess Margaret, gave on the radio programme ‘Children’s Hour’ during the Second World War. Thus began a lifetime of service that even the most hardened Republican has to recognise has been one of constant, faithful service. As we gently prepare to celebrate this great Platinum Jubilee, we give thanks for a monarch who faithfully, generously, and humbly serves, and we pray that we, in our turn, would recognise that we too are called to put the needs of others before our own, recognising that we are all called to serve.
