Autumn Term
17 MAY 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, We've had a jam-packed week here, which has felt much more normal. We started the week with Evensong, beautifully sung by members of Schola Cantorum, followed on Tuesday by the first catered event in school since the first lockdown: Head Girl Tea! There was a lovely turn-out of the Sixth Form, and it was a pleasure to be able to indulge in finger sandwiches and chocolatecoated strawberries as the outgoing Head Girl Team were presented with bouquets for all their hard work last year. I wish to thank them again for their efforts, and also to say what a splendid start the new Head Girl and Prefect team have made. On Wednesday, Music Captain Ella's hard work putting together the Summer Concert paid off in rich style, and my hearty congratulations to all participants - we were treated to some amazing music. Thank you, as ever, to Mr Caister and Miss Cantwell. In addition, our multiple school plays continue to be filmed; stand by for the dates of their premieres! My thanks to Ms Hansen and Mr Melvin (and Mr Bradford, from the Maintenance team). In Sport, our Couch to 5k initiative continues apace - literally. Tennis fixtures have begun, and we look forward to Sports Day. Last night, we welcomed girls to our Years 9 and 10 Academic Scholars' Dinner - hopefully the last to be conducted via Teams. It was a pleasure to see it so well attended, and my thanks to Mr O'Farrell for his superlative organisational skills. We were agog to learn that Mrs Pearson had managed to rustle up a three-course meal within an hour! Years 11 and 13 will have completed their assessments today (congratulations!), and will enjoy an 'extended' half term whilst teachers compile their grades. This means that we can jiggle things around in school, and I'm delighted to say Years 7, 8 and 9 will be slightly more mobile than they have been since September; they have been warned! Further relaxations will be made after half term.
I do hope that you have a pleasant weekend. Best wishes,
Dr Claire McShane

BOARDING NEWS Last weekend, our boarders requested to go to Guildford Town Centre to do a bit of shopping. Luckily, they all managed to stay dry in the Friary Shopping Centre when the heavens opened outside. They were all thrilled to come home to an afternoon tea of fresh scones, chocolate brownies and finger sandwiches made by Bev. Thank you, Bev! On Sunday, the girls went to church in the morning and then continued with some revision for their exams. In the afternoon, Miss Mentz made cookies and sausage rolls with Year 8 and 9 boarders. What a nice treat for all the girls after their revision.
Next week the girls are all looking forward to their last trip to Guildford for this half term!
ECO COUNCIL FACE MASK PRODUCTION Our Eco Council has been making face masks by recycling fabric from school blouses. They meet on a Thursday lunchtime so do join them if you would like to make some.
YEAR 9 & 10 ACADEMIC SCHOLARS’ DINNER On Thursday, we were pleased to host our Years 9 and 10 Academic Scholars' dinner, which was once again via Teams. After a Latin grace, the girls enjoyed a dinner with their families, followed by an after-dinner speech delivered by Dr McShane on the pioneering electrical engineer, Margaret Partridge. We are hopeful that our next Academic Scholars' celebratory dinner in the autumn will be a more social affair, which may actually take place in the parlour, and catered by Gary and his team once again! The 'Jug of Conversation' will undoubtedly make a welcome return!

This Week Geologists recognise that the earth has now entered the new epoch of the Anthropocene - a period where humans have had a greater impact on the earth than the natural processes. We are aware of the negative impact this has had, particularly as it has brought about the current Climate Crisis that we, as a country and a world, are only now slowly beginning to recognise and react to. It is now 5 years since Pope Francis’ letter to the world, Laudato Si’, and we marked this event by reflecting in Chapel on the fundamental question: ‘What kind of world do we want to live in?’, because it will be our choices today that will have an impact not only on us, but also on future generations - our children and grandchildren. There is so much that needs to be done, and it can feel overwhelming. We were shocked, for example, to hear that so much of our waste, including plastics that we had thought were destined for recycling, in fact are transported overseas, only to be put in landfill or burnt, adding to the CO2 burden o the planet (see here for more details) But the reality is that every positive choice that we make will make a difference. (Here are 100 suggestions for what you can do to help, and that’s just for plastic!) Pope Francis reminds us that we are all called to be good stewards of the Creation that God has shared with us. And we all have a responsibility to our world and for its future - for ourselves, for the poorest of the world’s population and for all future generations. We are challenged to act - and to act now!
