WORLD BOOK DAY AUTHOR VISIT Helen Dennis or H.L. Dennis, who wrote the Secret Breakers series and the Rivers of Ink series, will be visiting St Teresa's on Wednesday 2nd March to talk about her writing to girls in Years 7 – 9. This visit is part of our World Book Day celebrations and as Helen is a very interesting and engaging speaker, we are very much looking forward to finding out about how Helen became an author and where she gets her inspiration. Something that readers especially enjoy about these books is that there are several recognisable nearby locations e.g. Brighton Pavilion, St Paul’s Cathedral and the River Thames which play an important part in the stories and this really brings them to life. Mrs Smith, Head of English

CHEMISTRY NEWS This year we welcomed back the 'Top of the Bench' chemistry competition run by the Royal Society of Chemistry. The format was slightly different from previous years as the tasks were carried out on site at St Teresa's rather than alongside other teams at a different school. The team consisted of Kirsten S (Year 11), Alice P (Year 10), Emilie C (Year 9) and Angelina J (Year 9). They had to carry out an unfamiliar practical making sure to read the instructions carefully, record all their observations and then answer a set of challenging multiple choice questions. They all really enjoyed taking part and showed off their chemistry knowledge and practical skills, well done! Dr Evans, Head of Chemistry

NOTICES: EUROPEAN SPACE CAMP TRIP I am delighted to inform you that the Science Department is planning to run a trip for Years 7-9 to Brussels to the European Space Camp from Friday 21 April to Monday 24 April, 2023. There are a limited number of places available which will be offered on a first come, first served basis. A brief itinerary is listed below. European Space Camp We will check in to the ESC on Friday evening. Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning will be filled with workshops and activities run by the excellent staff at ESC. ESC have recently finished a large scale refurbishment in June 2020, so we expect the experience to be incredible.

Castle of Bouillon One of the most impressive remains of feudalism in Europe and the oldest feudal vestige in Belgium. Its origins go back to the 8th Century. The castle was used for military purposes until 1830. From the top of the main tower, you can admire a wonderful view of the Semois river and its meanders. We could potentially experience a falconry show as well as a permanent didactic exhibition. This trip is carefully designed to include elements of culture as well as science and engineering for your daughters. It is also guaranteed to be incredible fun! A letter went out this week to parents; consent forms need to be in by Friday 1 April 2022 Mr James Garlic, Head of Physics

YEAR 9 RETREAT DAY Thank you to those who have already sent in their Consent Forms for our Retreat Day. If you have not done so already, please send in the completed form either by email to Deacon Simon (sp.conrad@st-teresas.com) or your daughter’s Form Tutor as soon as possible. Deacon Simon Conrad, School Chaplain

DANIEL RADCLIFFE ‘THE WOMAN IN BLACK’ FILM VIEWING We are offering the opportunity for all of Year 9 to watch the Daniel Radcliffe film version of 'The Woman in Black' (the text we have been studying in class). It is surprisingly scary [Rating:12A], but a classic example of the Gothic Horror genre. I am sure they will get very excited watching it together. Please fill in the quick form below by the end of Friday so I can order snacks. Venue: Sixth Form Lecture Theatre Date: Wednesday 2nd March Time: 16:25-18:00 Pick-up: 18:00 from the school car park If you have any queries, please contact Mr Norris on m.norris@st-teresas.com

SIXTH FORM NEWS This first week back after half term has been very busy throughout the Sixth Form. Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to the outgoing Student Leadership Team for doing an outstanding job and for executing their duties with such vigour. The Year 12 Student Leadership Team started their time in office on Monday and I would like to say a huge well done to everyone on earning their positions. They have already been excitedly sharing their ideas for the school in the Student Leadership Team Meeting on Wednesday and look forward to achieving their new goals this year. The new Head Girl Team (Olivia, Pippa and myself) all have various attributes in which we hope we will improve the friendly school environment. On Tuesday, the Year 13 girls began their A-Level Mock examinations and I wish good luck to them all. They have all been working very hard and their efforts will certainly pay off. On Wednesday, Year 7 had a District Netball Tournament in which they came 4th place overall. Congratulations to all of the Year 7 girls who took part. Some of the Year 12 girls (Emma W, Emma P, Ella W and Leah G) helped with the scoring and timings of these matches. They all enjoyed helping with the Year 7 girls very much. Ella and Leah particularly enjoyed calling them for their next matches using the siren! All in all, it was a fantastic occasion for Year 12 girls to help out with the younger girls and be a part of this fantastic sporting event! We hope that you all have had a lovely half term! Red and Bobby, whom if you haven’t met yet arrived on Saturday 5th February, are now stabled in the barn. They are very friendly and you are welcome to say hello to them! We hope that Red and Bobby will become new riding school additions, but before they can be used in lessons they need to gain some fitness (in the case of Bobby!) and are being ridden by our amazing staff in the meantime. Please make sure that coats are brought up to ride, even if you don’t end up wearing them! The weather is very unpredictable at the moment, and while we do have some showerproof coats for you to borrow, it is best to bring your own just in case! Please also make sure that all riders turn up with time to spare before their lessons! This will give you time to get your horse ready and out to the arena. We will also ensure that instructors and yard staff help you get ready so that you can make the most of your riding lesson on the horse!

Easter Pony Days The Easter dates have already been sent out and published, and are available to book on the system. We do have some spaces left, so book now to avoid disappointment! If you would like to be added to the waiting list in case of a cancellation, then please email the office or, there is an update on the system where you will be emailed automatically if a space becomes available.

NSEA Competition Reports

There are more NSEA competitions coming up as the competitions pick up for this year.

We have some teams and individuals heading out for both NSEA and BSJA Just for Schools in the half term. We wish you all luck!

This Week This week we marked the Feast Day of one of our four House Saints—St Benedict of Nursia. Born in 1480, Benedict is the oldest of our House Patron Saints and had a huge influence on all the others. He had hoped for a quiet, life as a hermit, but his reputation spread and it was not long before a community had formed around him. People were attracted to Benedict’s lifestyle that took seriously the command of scripture to ‘pray at all times with all kinds of prayers’ (Ephesians 6:18). Benedict’s approach was to both spend time in prayer, particularly the Psalms, whilst also continuing about daily work in a prayerful manner. Following earlier approaches he divided the day - and the night! - into periods of prayer and periods of work, and his moto became ‘Ora et Labora—Pray and Work.’ As his community grew, he developed a guide for those who lived in his growing communities. This guide, known as The Rule of St Benedict, continues to be used by Benedictine communities across the world to this day. In his Rule, Benedict provides guidance and expectations for the life of the community, including the particular expectation for each member of the community—the Abbot, the Prior, etc. Finally he gives great emphasis to the role of Porter. The Porter’s role was a difficult one. They were expected to remain at the door, again day and night, to be ready to welcome visitors to the monastery. The rule is clear - all visitors are to be welcomed ‘as if they were Christ himself.’ As we reflect on the life of St Benedict and what he has to teach us today, perhaps we can take this advice from the Porter. We know that our own St Thérèse, in her Little Way, reminds us to respond with love to the opportunities that come before us each day. What a world it would be if our response to everyone we meet along the journey of life were to be the same as the response we would give to Christ himself!
