Autumn Term
24 MAY 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020
Dear Parents, We are looking forward not only to half term, but, thanks to a bit of space opening in the school as examination years realign themselves, a hint of normality returning afterwards. I communicated this week about these plans, and I reiterate them below for your convenience. Bubbles will remain intact, despite some movement now being built into the school day: • Full school uniform to be worn each day from after half term. We are now able to offer PE changing facilities, so PE kits will need to be brought into school. • Lockers will be provided to Year 8. • Year 9 and Year 10 may use the racks in the courtyard to stow their PE kit. • Year 10, as a special privilege, will gain access to Magdalen House as a common room. They will, therefore, vacate the Library. • The Library will now be utilised by Year 9, and the room above the Swimming Pool will no longer be used. Any lessons that take place in the Pool Room will take place in the Library. • Please note that the first week back is the school assessment week, which requires a degree of flexibility in terms of lunch arrangements (as Mairlot Hall will be used exclusively for Year 10 exams). Years 7, 8 and 9 will eat on rotation in the Dining Hall from 1pm. Year 10 will eat in the Atrium of Mairlot Hall. • After the assessment week, Years 9 and 10 will eat lunch in Mairlot Hall and Year 9 will vacate the Atrium fully. Years 7 and 8 will continue to eat lunch in the Dining Hall. • Year 9 will move to laboratories for some of their science lessons (this already occurred for Years 7 and 8). Years 7,8 and 9 will move to Art rooms for some of these lessons. Thank you very much for your support in this, as well as your outstanding support yesterday. Closing a bubble is never desirable, but the advice from PHE was clear.
Years 11 and 13 are reminded that the week after half term they will be having one-to one appointments with their subject teachers for the purposes of relaying which pieces of evidence have been used to determine their TAGs. The remainder of the school will undertake internal exams and assessments: I wish everyone the very best of luck! Please don't revise for the whole half term. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane
ART WORK OF THE WEEK COMPETITION Our winner of this week’s art competition is Francesca in Year 7 who painted an avocado in oil paints. Please do send your entries to n.menzies@st-teresas.com
BOARDING NEWS The Boarders enjoyed their last weekend collecting supplies from Sainsbury's in Cobham on Friday evening. This has been their first time at Sainsbury's since lockdown as they have been doing their food shopping online. On Saturday, our boarders had rehearsals for the upcoming school performances and spent the day relaxing at home. Later they had the opportunity to attend Saturday evening Mass. On Sunday, the girls took their last trip out to Guildford and treated themselves to bubble tea and burgers. We wish you a restful half-term break and look forward to welcoming our boarders back on Sunday afternoon on 6 June.
ROAD TO WIMBLEDON EVENT ESTA was delighted to host the Road To Wimbledon event for our U14 players on Tuesday. We were so impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm, determination and fantastic sportsmanship. There were some really competitive matches and amazing rallies! We would like to congratulate all the girls who took part. Special congratulations to the winner of the event, Evelyn N, who won all 4 of her matches and our very deserving runner up Lola H. Evelyn will now progress through to the County Finals with a chance to then play the National Finals at Wimbledon!
ECO COUNCIL The Eco Council are proud to announce that St Teresa’s has been awarded an Eco-Schools Silver Award for achievement in working towards a sustainable lifestyle. This is great news, congratulations and thank you for all your fantastic efforts. However their hard work doesn’t stop here, their next aim is to get the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. Good luck Eco-Council!
ENRICHMENT SOCIETY
At Monday's Enrichment Society, we were treated to three more excellent presentations from our Year 7 Renaissance Girls: Georgiana H. presented on 'The Notorious RBG', Ruth Bader-Ginsburg, her founding of the Women's Rights Project, and how she inspired others as an advocate for gender equality. Layla G. began by sharing a personal anecdote on observing crows in her garden, and decided to research their behaviour. She explored the bad reputation that crows shoulder, but also how studies have shown crows to be adept at solving puzzles, the phenomenon of crow funerals, and how they have been known to reward humans for acts of kindness! Finally, Sophia W. presented her research on North Korea, its history since 1948, and what life is like for North Koreans in the 21st century. Well done Year 7!
Enrichment Society is every Thursday at 16:30. If any parents, guardians, or other family members, are interested in delivering a talk at Enrichment Society via TEAMS during the year, please email Mr O’Farrell on j.ofarrell@st-teresas.com. All areas of interest and expertise are welcome!
SPECIAL VISITOR DURING EXAM WEEK We are very excited to let you know that during school assessment week we will have Phoebe, a therapy dog visiting us. All the girls are welcome to join her for strokes and walks around the school on Thursday and Friday lunchtime. Paula Cawley, Deputy Head (Pastoral)
MATHS NEWS In April, the Year 7 and 8 students sat the junior mathematics challenge. The questions are designed to test your reasoning and logical thinking. Congratulations to all who participated. A special mention to Katy H, Georgie H, Pretoria R, Lucie B, and Lucy M who achieved a bronze certificate. Emily C, Augusta M and Julia N achieved silver certificates.
MEDICAL NEWS Dear Parents, Thank you for continuing with the lateral flow testing twice a week. We are being encouraged to carry on testing throughout the half term period. Last week more tests were sent home with the girls, however, if you find you do not have enough kits please ask your daughter to collect more from the Medical Centre. Medicals for Year 8 will take place, week commencing 14th June. The medicals consist of height and weight, vision test and a discussion around health. Parents would have consented to this when completing the medical form when starting at St Teresa’s however if you do NOT want your daughter to have the medical please email the nurses on medical@st-teresas.com
SIXTH FORM NEWS Please see our first Prefect Team Update. We are so proud of how hard everyone has been working, and we hope this can give an insight into what has been happening behind the scenes! Claire Pitchford, Head of Sixth Form

You may have heard that we are expecting to lose Ellie who is booked to head home on Friday 4th June. This means that we will be tight for horses during the last four weeks of term.
We have been on the look out for ponies in the range of 13hh to 14.2hh so if you know of any that you think may be suitable for us then let us know! The office will also be starting to look at the timetable for the Autumn Term so if you want any changes to days and times then do let us know.
May Half Term Pony Days We are now fully booked on the Pony Mornings and Afternoons. But do still keep an eye out on the system in case of cancellations! Bookings will need to be made directly on the bookings system.
Visibility of the spaces will vary depending on horse availability. Please bring your own hat and boots to ride in as we are not lending out equipment until it is deemed safe to do so. Summer Holiday Pony Days The dates are now available on the booking system for the Summer Holidays!
Fundraising Message from Year 7 Hi everyone, my name is Inde W and I’m part of SPGN (Shetland Pony Grand National)! Here is a little description of my fundraising activities for Bob Champion Cancer Trust.
Bob Champion is a famous horse racer who was diagnosed with testicular cancer just before he won the Grand National in 1981. He established the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983 to raise money for cancer research. This year marks his 40th anniversary of his big win and he has walked 191 miles on 40 different racing yards. I walked with him on my Shetland Buttercup for his last walk and then watched him ride for the first time in 10 years! SPGN is a big thing in the equestrian world. As a member we race at very big venues, and all the money that SPGN raises is donated to Bob Champion Cancer Trust. I would appreciate any help you can offer in support of this amazing charity! This Week This week we celebrated the feast of Pentecost, the day on which the Holy Spirit, as promised by Jesus, descended on the infant Church and transformed its members into courageous witnesses, whose message transcended all human barriers and distinctions, even those of language. There is a poignant moment in the popular West End musical, Come from Away that illustrates, in a small way, this transcendence. The musical gives an account of what happened to the thousands of travellers who had to be diverted to the mid-Atlantic airport of Gander when American airspace was closed following the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers on 11st September, 2001. At one point a group of bewildered African travellers, who didn't speak a word of English, are met at an airbase by a group from the Salvation Army, who were unusually wearing their full uniforms With no one to translate, the visitors were terrified, fearing that they were being imprisoned. But a quick witted helper, noticing a woman carrying a Bible and realising that it would be organised into books, chapters and verses like their own, turned to Philippians 4:6 where it is written— regardless of the language - ‘Be anxious for nothing!’ In an instant, the fear fell away and life-long bonds of fellowship were formed. As we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, we pray that the Holy Spirit will enter our hearts and renew us, as it did to those first followers of Jesus, that we too may work to break down the barriers that divide and separate us, so that all may bear witness to the love of God in our lives.
