SIXTH FORM NEWS On Tuesday Dr Poffley presented a talk on Life at Oxford and Cambridge - the College System for the year 12 students setting their aspirations high for university. The girls were all very interested and learnt a lot about what life could be like from Dr Poffley, an Oxford Alumni himself. Our Oxford Programme is available for all students, Miss Pitchford emailed information for the programme to all students last half term and so if you would like to join in, please check your email to see the sessions that are on offer for your Key Stage and come along. On Wednesday, the senior hockey team participated in the Kings College School tournament in Wimbledon. We faced four different schools and began the first match with great determination as we dominated the game, unluckily leading to a draw. After playing two more matches, we made it through to the playoffs and faced Trinity School. Within the first two minutes our team were ahead with Connie scoring the first goal of the match. With high spirits we battled against the tough opposition, concluding in a very close score. It was great to see younger members of the school stepping up to play against older, tougher oppositions. All in all, it was a great day of hockey and we all played fantastically as a team. Pippa M and Emma W On Thursday Year 12 had their Personal Tutor launch, this is a pastoral programme within which students have the opportunity to choose any member of staff from the school community and ask them to become their Personal Tutor. They will be available to help them through any queries or issues that they come across, they are also an extra mode of support for UCAS process. It is a really valuable programme and I know that the Year 12 students will both enjoy and benefit from partaking in it. As we have started a new half term the Sixth Form Enrichment and Ethics Carousel rotated, and we began our new sessions. Sixth Form Enrichment groups that are on offer include yoga, volunteering, mindfulness, learn a new skill and debating. Each member of the Sixth Form spends half a term in each of the different groups as a way to enhance their wider knowledge and understanding beyond the curriculum. Sixth Form ethics groups also run for half a term each and aim to examine what we mean when we talk about personal morality and ethical behaviour in all of our lives? It’s very much an open ended discussion amongst everybody, and views often differ considerably. There are extremely lively debates and strongly held opinions. The other purpose is to examine the ideas of absolute and relative philosophy that exist within moral decision-making. A brief look at the major and influential philosophers in history. The overall aim is to make it as relevant as possible to our everyday existence. For example, this week we have considered the global moral response and imperative when referring to environmental ethics, and the part that we play within that, in consideration of the COP 26 conference. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable first week back. Imogen Lawford, Deputy Head Girl Student Magazine Competitions : Art The magazine committee would like you to submit any artwork centred around the theme of autumn, whether it be from art class, your own pieces or photos you are proud of, to be featured in the student magazine. ACADEMIC SCHOLARS’ DINNER Our first Academic Scholars’ dinner of the year took place in the Sixth Form Reading Room on Thursday evening – the first in-person scholars’ dinner since January 2020! Naturally, Dr McShane’s jug of conversation also made a welcome return, as did the traditional reciting of University College Oxford’s grace, which has the longest grace of any Oxford college. Scholars from Years 7 and 8 were invited to a delicious two-course meal, followed by an after-dinner speech delivered by guest speaker Professor James Lee. Professor Lee is Professor of Law and Vice-Dean (Education) at The Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London. His inspiring words reminded the girls of the value of scholarship, as articulated and celebrated by St Teresa. Our next scholars’ dinner for those in Years 11, 12 and 13, will take place in the spring term.
MUSIC NEWS On Monday 8 November we have a String Quartet Concert featuring the compositions of our A Level music students: Lara A & Ella M We are delighted to welcome back the string quartet to St Teresa’s School for this concert. The visiting players are all professional performers at the top of the musical world. Our pupils, Lara and Ella, have created free compositions and have collaborated with the quartet on a previous occasion to develop their work. The concert presents a wonderful opportunity for everyone to hear the results of this most successful collaboration.
Dear Parents and Players
After 7 years with us at ESTA, Jack Lane is moving on to continue his coaching career at The All England Lawn Tennis Club (Wimbledon) from January 2022. We have no doubt you’ll be as sad to see Jack go as are we, so we would like to arrange a time when we can all get together to give him a fitting farewell at the ESTA Clubhouse before the end of term. Further details to follow! We are pleased to announce we have an amazing new coach taking over Jack’s lessons in the new year. ESTA
SCHOOL BUSES The late buses have become increasingly popular so please could we ask that, even if your child is taking the free transport to Effingham Junction, you book this in advance as we cannot guarantee there may be a space for your child if you do not book the slot. Please book your daughter’s slot by emailing transport@effinghamschools.org. Thank you.
PASTORAL NOTICES You may have heard or even seen the latest Netflix craze ‘Squid Game’. This series is certified 15, which I feel is highly inappropriate for anyone under this age due to the sexually explicit scenes, nudity, extreme violence, self-harm, suicide and bad language. If your daughter wants to watch Squid Game, I strongly advise you watch it first. Please also be aware that some scenes have been uploaded to platforms such as TikTok. If your daughter has watched Squid Game and seems upset or shocked by something they have seen or, if you are concerned about anything they’ve viewed, I have attached some advice from our Wellbeing Hub about talking to her about what she is viewing online which you may find helpful. It may also be useful to check your parental settings on your daughter's Netflix devices. Some useful resources : #AskTheAwkward aims to help parents and carers have regular conversations with their children about online relationships and more. The resource includes three short films created in a social experiment style, with real parents and their children to capture their reactions to a range of questions.

This Week In The Wellbeing Hub—Body Image Body Image with Dr Aric Sigman, Wednesday 10th November, 6:30pm Join us to learn at our next webinar on BODY IMAGE AND THE PRESSURE OF PHYSICAL APPEARANCE with our expert speaker Dr Aric Sigman. A recording will be made available for 1 week after the live event. Dr Aric Sigman is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood and is an author of five books on PSHE-related topics including Getting Physical which won The Times Educational Supplement’s Information Book Award. He regularly advises Department of Health NHS, European Parliament and The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Early intervention is key. Take time to understand the signs and symptoms of low self-esteem and negative body image now so you are better equipped to help your child should problems arise. Feel free to share this information with friends and family so they too are better equipped to support the children and young people in their lives. What is body image? Body image is not how you look. Body image is how you think and feel about your body, your appearance, or your looks. It is our mental picture of ourselves, and we all have one. Some people have a positive body image, and others have a negative body image, and the latter can have a negative impact on many areas of our lives. Is body dissatisfaction just a “girl thing”? Absolutely not, but the difference is that where girls generally focus on weight loss, boys are more likely to be concerned about muscle mass and bulking up. A 2008 Ofsted study of 150,000 children found that by the age of 10, a third of girls and 22% of boys cited their bodies as being their main source of worry. This worry is leading boys to over exercise, use protein shakes and take anabolic steroids to build muscle mass. Body dissatisfaction is driving these behaviours, but using steroids during adolescence can affect the brain’s limbic system – the part which controls mood – so whilst they might build bigger muscles which might help with the feelings attached to the body dissatisfaction, steroids can lead to drastic mood swings (Roid Rage), depression and paranoia. Steroid use can also cause skin problems like acne, premature hair loss, breast enlargement, shrinking of the testicles and erectile dysfunction – none of which are likely to make someone feel good.... The full blog, which covers body dimorphic disorder (BDD), the causes of body dissatisfaction and what we can do to change a negative body image, is available in The Wellbeing Hub .

A reminder to our riders to bring jumpers and coats as the weather gets colder and wetter as we head towards winter. Also, as the weather starts to turn, if we are unable to offer ridden training due to the weather or unforeseen circumstances, stable management or equitation theory training will be provided instead. This Week We are delighted this year to be supporting the Children in Distress Christmas Shoebox Appeal. Children in Distress was born from a children’s hospice in the north of England that extended its charitable reach by supporting orphanages and terminally ill children in Romania and other Eastern European countries. (More details on the charity are available here). As in previous years we are asked to decorate a shoebox - base and lid separately, and to fill the box with gifts and treats, either for a baby, a child (state the approximate age) or, for the first time this year, an elderly person. Our aim is to bring joy to those babies, children and elderly people who, without our help, would not be able to celebrate Christmas. We have a very tight turn around this year so that we can be sure that the boxes are delivered by Christmas. Please therefore send your boxes in to school by Monday, 15th November (and earlier if you can). We will then ensure that they are delivered to the distribution centre. Full details are available here of how to pack your box are available here. Please do encourage your daughter to get actively involved in preparing and packing your shoebox. Thank you for your support!
