BOARDING NEWS Last weekend was spent in the beautiful setting of Windsor; the boarders visited Windsor Castle. The weather was glorious and many photos were taken. The girls enjoyed learning the history of the castle and the changing of the guards. We even noticed the flag was up - the Queen was there! After a couple of hours, the girls were ready to hit the shops. The high street was bustling and the girls enjoyed eating snacks and buying treats and souvenirs. A late return back but the girls shared their day with the others at the dining table. On Sunday afternoon, the girls were treated to an afternoon in the Cinema to watch Sing 2! They loved it! Next weekend we will visit London - St Paul’s Cathedral and Borough Market! We hope the weather will be as good this weekend!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARDS YEAR 11 SILVER DofE 4-6 March — POSTPONED Unfortunately, due to the heavy rainfall over the past few days it has become unsafe to canoe along the River Thames. As such, the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Practice has had to be postponed until the 1921 March, 2022. This would have been the date of the actual expedition anyway so hopefully it will not inconvenience you and your daughter too much. The company who run the expeditions, Rock the Boat, have suggested that the date of the actual expedition is moved to 10-12 April, which is during the Easter holidays. Hopefully, this move will not be an inconvenience. However, If you have any questions then I am more than happy to answer them. Mr Stephens (m.stephens@st-teresas.com)

YEAR 10 BRONZE DofE A reminder please that the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Training Expedition is this weekend! Good luck to everyone taking part. Please see joining instructions from Rock the Boat to ensure that your daughter is prepared. There is a Catch Up Meeting on Monday 7 March for those students who are attending the Netball finals on Sunday.

If you have any questions please contact Mr Stephens at m.stephens@st-teresas.com

SIXTH FORM NEWS Over the past week the Year 13 students have been very busy completing their Mock examinations which finished on Tuesday. Congratulations to all of the Year 13 girls, they have worked exceptionally hard in preparation for their exams in the Summer Term. Well done to Leah (Chaplaincy Prefect) and all the girls who helped her raise an incredible £160 on the Fair-Trade tuck shop on Friday. The money raised will go to the Marie Curie Charity. Thank you to Darcey L, Ella W and Olivia M for helping her create such a successful profit in her first week. Several Sixth Form girls helped out with the GCSE PE Hockey moderation on Tuesday. It was a fantastic chance to get some hockey practice with a range of year groups. The girls (Hannah K, Emma W, Pippa M and Ella W) really enjoyed the game and were pleased they could help out. On Wednesday, the whole school had an Ash Wednesday Service. It was a lovely way to get the whole school community together to celebrate the beginning of Lent. As we went up to get our ashes we all put a flower on the board and prayed for everyone in Ukraine. We also learnt that it is important to give up something more than just chocolate for Lent! At lunchtime, some of the girls went to the chapel for a reflection and wrote prayers for those in Ukraine. It was a lovely time to show our compassion for those in need. As part of helping those in Ukraine, the Chaplaincy are asking for donations by Friday 11 th March. These donations can vary from socks to first aid kit. On Thursday afternoon the whole of the Sixth Form benefitted from a PSHCE talk about relationships. We were reminded of the signs of unhealthy and healthy relationships and were given advice for what to do and say in certain situations. On Thursday evening, the Academic Scholars from Years 11, 12 and 13 had a dinner. The guest speaker was Kirsten L (Senior Prefect Academic) who gave an interesting talk on insulin. This annual event was a fantastic way for our Upper School Academic Scholars to learn something new and to gather together as a community with their teachers. As a treat for the Year 13 students after completing their Mock examinations, The Head Girl Team surprised them with Cinnamon Buns for breakfast on Thursday in the Common Room. On Friday afternoon, the Year 13s had sound bath with Dr Sue Greenwood where they were able to wind down and relax after their Mock exams.

Wishing everyone a happy weekend and looking forward to updating you on more exciting news next week. Emma W, Deputy Head Girl

YOUNG SHAKESPEARE COMPANY As part of the English Department’s revision programme, the Young Shakespeare Company will be visiting St Teresa’s on 18 March for a workshop performance of Romeo and Juliet for all girls in Year 11. They will be back on 29 April to perform Macbeth to Year 9 to help them prepare for their summer exams. See below for some fantastic reviews: “Absolutely phenomenal! The students loved you! It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you all. The personable and easy-going attitude of the actors was incredibly refreshing and I was so impressed with the quality of the performance.” “Absolutely brilliant! The students thoroughly enjoyed your visit, without exception. They were engaged and enthralled throughout.” Mrs Smith, English Dept

MUSIC NEWS

ACADEMIC SCHOLARS’ DINNER Our second Academic Scholars’ dinner of the year took place in the Sixth Form Reading Room on Thursday evening. Dr McShane’s ‘jug of conversation’ made its usual appearance, as did the traditional reciting of University College Oxford’s grace, which has the longest grace of any Oxford college. Scholars from Years 11, 12 and 13 were invited to a delicious two-course meal, followed by an after-dinner speech delivered by Senior Academic Prefect, Kirsten L, who eloquently shared her thoughts on the importance of insulin to our bodies. Well done, Kirsten! Our next scholars’ dinner for those in Years 9 and 10 will take place in the summer term.

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS Year 10 Drama GCSE students visit Year 2 to help them perform their set text ‘Blood Brothers’ Year 10 Drama GCSE students had a great time spending Monday morning’s break time with members of Year 2. Year 10 are studying ‘Blood Brothers’ as their set text and during break they played games with Year 2 to observe them and see how they could use their own vocal and physical skills effectively to create credible 7 year olds. Year 10 really enjoyed their time in prep and the experience enhanced their understanding and appreciation of how to play the younger versions of the play’s main characters.

DANCE CLUB The talented dancers in our popular after school Dance Club have been working on lifts with Miss Richards and they have really been enjoying it.

As we know, the past two years have taken their toll on the wellbeing of so many people and the last thing we all needed was more uncertainty and drama, but here we are, Russia has invaded Ukraine, and none of us knows how this war will play out. Amongst children and young people anxiety levels are high, and many are feeling frightened as they grapple, perhaps for the first time, with the possibility of war in Europe, and nuclear threat. We have put together a blog post with our top tips on how to support young people through these uncertain times (attached and accessible within the ‘resources’ tab within The Wellbeing Hub)- we encourage you to share this with staff and parents. You could circulate this via email, pop it in your upcoming bulletins or have copies displayed in staff rooms or on parent noticeboards. Teen Tips

We hope that you all have had a lovely week! Please make sure that coats are brought up when you ride, even if you don’t end up wearing them! The weather is very unpredictable at the moment, and while we do have some showerproof coats for you to borrow, it is best to bring your own just in case! Please also make sure that all riders turn up with time to spare before their lessons! This will give you time to get your horse ready and out to the arena. We will also ensure that instructors and yard staff help you get ready so that you can make the most of your riding lesson on the horse!

Easter Pony Days The Easter dates have already been sent out and published, and are available to book on the system. We do have some spaces left, so book now to avoid disappointment! If you would like to be added to the waiting list in case of a cancellation, then please email the office or, there is an update on the system where you will be emailed automatically if a space becomes available.

NSEA Competition Reports On Saturday 26th February, after some swapping around we had two teams head to Merrist Wood to compete in the NSEA Show jumping Qualifier in the 70cm and 80cm classes. In the 70cm class, the team - Jackson, Sofie, Izzy, Lilly - did amazingly with four clear rounds! The team came first, and qualified for the NSEA Championships!! Izzy placed 4th as an individual and also qualified for the Championships, while Sofie placed 5th just missing out on that qualification, but qualified for the Championship Plate instead! The other two unfortunately just missed out on the top placings. Well done! In the 80cm, the team didn’t do as well but Lilly and Joe rode two amazing clear rounds. Unfortunately they missed out on the top placings and no one managed to qualify. Congratulations to you all!! And good luck to those heading to Felbridge for the Eventer’s Challenge and Grass Roots on Sunday!

This Week On Wednesday we marked the beginning of the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Service. During the Service we reflected on the account from Luke’s Gospel where Zacchaeus is approached by Jesus. This, perhaps, is the most important point. God always approaches us. He goes out of his way to reveal himself to us and to invite us into his life of Love. All we are called to do is respond, as Zacchaeus did. Zacchaeus fell to his knees. In Lent we too are called to pray, to plug ourselves back into the that communication between us and God. Whatever we currently do, we are encouraged to do more during this season of Lent. Zacchaeus showed true repentance for what he had done wrong. He made amends - four times over - for his dishonesty. We too are called to leave our old ways behind. Yes, a simple way to begin is to give up those extras that we don’t really need - sweets, chocolate, etc. But more importantly, we are called to fast from anything that separates us from God and from our neighbour, perhaps selfishness, dishonesty, our negative attitude towards others. What ever it is, fast from it. And finally, Zacchaeus gave away much of what he had. We too are called to give generously to our neighbour, whether financially, or by giving generously of our time. Sadly, the terrible events in Ukraine have brought home to us how fragile life can be. But it also provides us with many opportunities to help us, and others, through Lent. Firstly, follow Pope Francis’ call to pray for Ukraine as we did as a whole school. Take the opportunity to give thanks for the blessings that we receive that our brothers and sisters in Ukraine no longer have. And support our Appeal for Ukraine to show love for our neighbours. However you mark it, have a blessed Lent!
