BOARDING NEWS The boarders had a fun packed weekend after half term. It was so lovely to welcome them all back. Friday night the girls enjoyed Fireworks at Imber Court with fun fair rides with a Bruno Mars tribute band. A goldfish was won - we have named him 'Que'! Saturday was spent shopping in Westfield Shopping Centre in London. On Sunday, the boarding house enjoyed a cream tea - thanks Bev!
MUSIC NEWS The music department was delighted to welcome back our visiting string quartet to present a wonderful evening of music making on Monday 8th in the chapel. The visiting musicians had previously worked with Lara and Ella on their A level compositions and the concert presented the results of a most impressive collaboration. Lara and Ella both presented their pieces confidently with a short talk that included the quartet playing short extracts to demonstrate how the works were constructed. The resulting quartets were breathtaking with their rich sounds and complex harmonies emanating from the string instruments. Our girls then performed on the 'cello and flute with the professionals, which was wonderful to hear. A marvellous concert that sounded so amazing in our beautiful chapel. Mr Caister thanked the visiting musicians for all their help given to Lara and Ella, before telling the girls how proud the school is to have such wonderful musicians.
SIXTH FORM NEWS This term as we enter into Autumn and see the leaves change from green to orange to brown we have launched the Autumn Term edition of the student magazine. The magazine committee believe it is extremely important to have contributions from the whole school community, so we have set up 3 competitions which are centred around the theme of Autumn for every year group to take part in. School Magazine Art Competition: We are looking for girls to submit any artwork they have created either in art classes, their own original pieces or photographs that they are proud of taking around the autumn theme. To submit competition entries please scan your work or take a clear picture and send it to student.magazine@st-teresas.com School Magazine Short Story Writing Competition: Another competition running is a short story for creative writers around autumn which must not exceed 500 words. To submit competition entries please scan your work or take a clear picture and send it to student.magazine@st-teresas.com School Magazine Reviews Competition: We also aim to include a section of reviews on inspiring books, films and music to be able to provide suggestions for other students. This entails sending a short paragraph to the Microsoft form below detailing what you enjoyed about your choice and a sentence or two of background information. https://forms.office.com/r/csb4P1RD5u The deadline for all of the competitions above is the 26th November 2021. We look forward to reading and viewing your amazing pieces of work. Imogen L, Deputy Head Girl On Monday Evening we had a professional string quartet come in to play our A Level compositions in a concert alongside other brilliant works by Handel, Mozart and Haydn. This was both an enlightening and inspirational event; playing alongside such capable musicians really helped our awareness of composition and performance. We both valued the experience so much and are so grateful to Mr Caister for the opportunity! Ella M, Music Captain
On Tuesday lunch time we held an Oxbridge Meet The Applicant talk in the lecture theatre with some of this year's Oxbridge applicants. There was a massive turnout with students from Year 7 all the way through to 11. We had lots of great questions and I hope everyone is feeling better enlightened to the application process. If there are any further questions, feel free to email Dr Poffley. Saskia C, Senior Prefect Academic
MED SOC This week Kirsten L and Jess H gave an excellent talk on Down’s Syndrome. They explained what Down’s Syndrome is and then we watched a clip showing the lives of three people living with Down’s Syndrome. We then discussed the current abortion law and whether we agreed with it or not, taking into consideration ethics, discrimination, quality of life among other things. All of the resources are available on the MedSoc team. If you would like to be a member, please let Dr Evans know. Next meeting: 23rd November 1.15pm in Room 29 (Year 10 – Year 13)

PSHE LESSONS—EXAM TECHNIQUES On Friday 5th and Tuesday 9th November, Laura Buckeridge from Learning Performance gave excellent talks to Year 10 and Year 11 on study skills and memory techniques. The sessions were very interactive and the girls worked through booklets with Laura's guidance. They will be revisiting these techniques in their next PSHE lesson. The Parent Forum in the evening also provided useful insight into how to support girls through their GCSE's. If you are a Year 10 or Year 11 parent or guardian, please email Miss Cantwell if you would like the recording to be sent to you.

This Week We joined together as a whole school community for our annual Service of Remembrance on Thursday as we once again remembered the signing of the Armistice to end the First World War and to remember all those who have died in that and the many subsequent wars that have so disfigured our world. We particularly remembered those whose service and sacrifice has brought us that peace that we can now enjoy. It has been a tradition, with this year marking the centenary, for people, mostly in Commonwealth countries, to wear a red poppy and, through the work of the Royal British Legion, to remember those who gave their lives in the two World Wars and those, along with their families, and those from our Armed Forces who continue to be affected by war to this day. The white poppy of the Peace Pledge Union asks us to remember the horrors of war and to commit to living lives of peace. This way of remembering those who are victims of war also encourages us and our leaders to challenge attempts to glamorise or glorify war. The black or brown poppy encourages us to remember those from the Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities who also contributed to bringing peace but whose contribution is so often forgotten or ignored. It is a reminder to remember all those who gave so selflessly. The purple poppy is a reminder of the countless, unrecorded animal victims of war, both those who died in conflict, and those, who by neglect or otherwise were also victims of war. Any discussion of poppies is always controversial. People often hold very strong views. You may have seen the trolling that TV presenters have received for wearing a poppy with the leaves at what was considered an incorrect angle. As the great prayer of peace reminds us, we should first seek to understand rather than be understood Perhaps it is more important, as we did in our Services this week, to reflect on the small piece of stone, a piece of the memorial from Thiepval Memorial that commemorates those who died in the Battle of At the going the Somme. The stone includes just part of a letter down of the sun perhaps a W or an M - that once spelt the name of an and in the unknown soldier whose life, along with countless morning millions, was cruelly cut short. While we can never WE WILL know who this individual was, in our time of prayer, reflection and remembrance this week, they, along with REMEMBER all those who have been died in such tragedy, were THEM truly remembered.
