UKRAINE APPEAL—THANK YOU! We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the St Teresa's community in donating items to our Ukraine appeal. The Chapel is absolutely overflowing. Two van loads went to the White Eagle Club in Balham on Thursday and two more went today - and there are plenty more to go! Please could we request a pause in donations as we work through the backlog. Many, many thanks again for your incredible and humbling generosity. Dr Claire McShane Headmistress
BOARDING NEWS Another fabulous weekend! The Boarders took the train to London and had a tour planned by Mrs Gautier. First they went to 'One New Change’ - a shopping centre with a difference. The girls did not expect to be taken up to the very top of the building for a roof top view of London - they were amazed and couldn't wait to take photos! St Paul’s Cathedral was just across the road. We entered and listened to audio headsets as we walked around. We then challenged the girls to walk all the way to the top with Mrs Wragg leading the way; 528 steps to the top. The views were mesmerising. The long walk down made our legs shake but well done girls - it was worth it! Some well-deserved shopping was planned next - along the way we went to Postman’s Park. A beautiful park where we could read about Londoners’ heroic self-sacrifices. We ended our trip in Borough Market. The smells of all the food on offer were mouth-watering. Even our gappies queued for some apple crumble - it was definitely worth the wait. Sunday was a relaxing day, Sainsbury’s for the girls’ weekly shop and preparation for International Women's Day. The girls made posters and enjoyed doing inspiring activities. Next week we have planned a bus tour around Oxford. Mrs Zoe Wragg , Deputy Head of Boarding
Eco Tip of the week: Did you know you can use compostable tea bags and coffee grains around your plants to add nitrogen and organic matter improving the soil structure.

THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE BRAIN St Teresa’s would like to invite you to a presentation by Dr Guy Sutton on 24 March 18.30-20.30 in Mairlot Hall Tickets available via Eventbrite please click here to book your tickets. 'The Present and Future of the Brain'.
The lecture will introduce basic structure and function of the brain before moving to applied areas such as recent work studying brain changes during space travel. We will explore emerging technologies such as brain organoids (growing human brain tissue in the laboratory) and the use of brain computer interfaces to permit movement in paralysed patients and to control prosthetic limbs in amputees. In the final part of the lecture, we will turn our attention to the next twenty years and beyond: translating our thoughts into sound, interacting with mobile phones and electronic devices through thought, the possibility of telepathy and cognitive augmentation through neural implants What are the ethical dimensions of such research and how far should we go? Brain-nerd heaven!

SIXTH FORM NEWS This week we organised for the school to be able to celebrate International Women’s Day throughout the whole week! In Whole School Assembly on Monday, the Head Girl Team delivered an assembly on International Women’s Day. We spoke about inspirational women both outside and within our school community. As the students left the assembly, they were given a purple ribbon to wear on their blazer in honour of International Women’s Day. Thank you to the Year 9 students who helped to make 600 ribbons! We organised an International Women’s Day Quiz for the whole school to do in their form time and the winners will be announced in assembly next week. The whole school also had a purple cake for pudding on Tuesday; thank you to the catering team. In the Year 12’s Careers lesson on Monday, we had an external speaker from Sheffield University talk about higher education and what other routes are out there after school. We learnt more about niche university courses and why they can be useful. On Wednesday, Year 12 went on a Careers trip to a University Fair held at Sir William Perkins School. There were various universities there, telling us about their courses and how they are different from one another. We all walked round, listening and asking relevant questions. It was very interesting to see so many options and made us all think more about where we would like to go! All in all, it was a fantastic trip for the Year 12 girls to get a further insight into more university options. On Tuesday and Wednesday, all of the Student Leadership Team helped in the Chapel, organising all the generous donations for those in Ukraine from the whole school community. It was great to get involved and support a good cause. Thank you to Deacon Simon for organising all of the donations with us and thank you everyone in our school community for all your donations!
This week in Sixth Form PSHCE Teresa Baron came to speak to us to carry on the theme of healthy and unhealthy relationships. She encouraged us to reflect on warning signs in relationships and how to make sure you are in a healthy relationship and, personal boundaries. Next week we have our Enrichment sessions so we will be in our new enrichment groups enjoying the activities that include yoga, learning a new skill, wellbeing, current affairs and volunteering. As part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Project, the Head Girl Team planted a tree with Dr McShane and Mrs Conrad, on the front lawn on Friday. This was in celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Next week we have lots of things planned, we are looking forward to welcoming all year groups to the Art Application Pathway Spring Term event Meet The Applicant, this event is on Tuesday 15 March in the Lecture Theatre at lunch time. Next Wednesday the 2021/2022 Student Leadership Team are having a celebratory Cream Tea with the 2022/2023 Student Leadership Team to celebrate the outgoing team and welcome our new team into their new roles. Emma W (Deputy Head Girl) Prep School International Women’s Day assembly As the Prep School prefect, I had the honour this week to present an assembly for International Women’s Day. After a quick prayer and hymn, I was introduced to the students to teach them the importance of celebrating all that women have achieved, and how they have and will continue to influence the world. As part of the assembly the girls learnt a little about the history of how this day started, as well as some of the famous women who took part in shaping our world today. Women such as Mary Seacole, Emily Davidson and Ada Lovelace, paved the way towards women’s rights and equality. This year the theme is #BreakTheBias, so, I wanted to teach the girls the importance of not discriminating or stereotyping due to someone’s gender, race or ethnicity. We crossed our arms in solidarity and pushed away the unwanted hate. I believe that girls can do anything boys can do and more. No one should ever give up no matter what happens or challenges that they have to go through. To finalise the assembly, I announced that the catering staff will be serving purple cake at lunch to celebrate this empowering moment for women in history. Charlotte R (Lower School and Prep School Prefect)
ROTARY YOUTH DEBATE Myah R, Kate F and Morayo S (Year 9) took part in the Rotary Club debate for 13 to 17 year olds which was held at St Teresa's on 9th March. They will be back on 29 April to perform Macbeth to Year 9 to help them prepare for their summer exams. See below for some fantastic reviews: “Absolutely phenomenal! The students loved you! It has been an absolute pleasure to work with you all. The personable and easy-going attitude of the actors was incredibly refreshing and I was so impressed with the quality of the performance.” “Absolutely brilliant! The students thoroughly enjoyed your visit, without exception. They were engaged and enthralled throughout.” Mrs Smith, English Dept

ART NEWS Throughout the week, students from Years 5-13 had the opportunity to mark International Women’s Day by exploring an array of contemporary artists’ and designers’ work. These contemporary artists and designers were introduced to the students during their Art, Textiles, Graphic Design, Small Metals, Ceramic and Photography lessons.
In addition, our Art Scholars’ Enrichment club, and students who attend the weekly lunchtime art club, formulated a series of expressive artworks, whereby they painted to music. They enjoyed listening to soundtracks by female artists, song writers and composers, where they then created an exciting collection of outcomes in response to the melodies played – fantastic work was produced by everyone! The students really involved themselves in this activity, using a range of colourful inks, to create marks that represented the way the music sounded and formed in their minds. They embodied the true message of International Women’s Day, with each composition being unique and different, showing the girls’ talents. Charlotte R (Yr 13 Art Captain)
PERFORMING ARTS NEWS Year 10 GCSE Drama students’ trip to the National Theatre to see ‘Wuthering Heights’ Year 10 Drama GCSE students had a great time seeing the National Theatre’s excellent production of ‘Wuthering Heights’, directed by Emma Rice. It was an outstanding production and the students gained so much from seeing such an inventive and theatrical performance. They enjoyed visiting the National Theatre and experiencing a modern interpretation of a classic novel.
Year 8 ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Performances Year 8 have been performing extracts from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ this week, focusing particularly on creating modern adaptations of the original Shakespearean text. There were some fantastic performances from many of the Year 8s and it was lovely to see the students embrace Shakespeare’s work and enjoy performing this tragic love story.
Year 9 Chair Duets Year 9 have been working on creating their own Chair Duets, inspired by the Physical Theatre Company Frantic Assembly. They have created some excellent work and performed some powerful, emotive and touching pieces.
Aerial Hoops and Silks Some of our students enjoyed spending Tuesday lunchtime practicing on the aerial silk and hoops in preparation for the Musical Theatre Showcase 2022 at the end of term.

As we know, the past two years have taken their toll on the wellbeing of so many people and the last thing we all needed was more uncertainty and drama, but here we are, Russia has invaded Ukraine, and none of us knows how this war will play out. Amongst children and young people anxiety levels are high, and many are feeling frightened as they grapple, perhaps for the first time, with the possibility of war in Europe, and nuclear threat. We have put together a blog post with our top tips on how to support young people through these uncertain times (attached and accessible within the ‘resources’ tab within The Wellbeing Hub)- we encourage you to share this with staff and parents. You could circulate this via email, pop it in your upcoming bulletins or have copies displayed in staff rooms or on parent noticeboards. Teen Tips

We hope that you all have had a lovely week! Please make sure that coats are brought up when you ride, even if you don’t end up wearing them! The weather is very unpredictable at the moment, and whilst we do have some showerproof coats for you to borrow, it is best to bring your own just in case! Please also make sure that all riders turn up with time to spare before their lessons! This will give you time to get your horse ready and out to the arena. We will also ensure that instructors and yard staff help you get ready so that you can make the most of your riding lesson on the horse!
Easter Pony Days The Easter dates have already been sent out and published, and are available to book on the system. We do have some spaces left, so book now to avoid disappointment! NSEA Competition Reports On Sunday 6th March, a selection of NSEA riders headed out to Felbridge to compete in the Eventers Challenge and Grass Roots SJ Qualifiers. For the Eventers challenge, in the 70cm class, Inde and Lilly rode brilliantly with Inde placing 1st and qualifying for the Hickstead Champs! In the 80cm, we had a team of four riders - Inde, Lilly, Izzy and Antonia - who did amazingly and as a team placed 5th! Unfortunately they were just out of the placings to qualify for Hickstead, but a big congratulations to you all!
In the Grass Roots Show Jumping, in the 50cm and 60cm classes, the riders did really well and Pernille placed 4th in the 50cm, qualifying for the Regional Champs!
Well done to you all and good job for bearing with the strong winds that day!
This Week In this first week of Lent, we remembered that during Lent we recall the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for his great sacrifice at Easter. When we think about Jesus, and remember him as the Son of God, we can sometimes have a distorted view of his humanity. We are reminded that, because he was fully human, he was tempted in every way that we are. The difference is that Jesus, unlike us, never gave into those temptations. During Lent, in particular, we remember the three particular temptations that Jesus was faced with in the desert. Firstly, after a long period of fasting, there was the temptation to use his powers to turn a stone into bread. We all too easily fall into the temptation of satisfying our own personal needs, of placing those needs before those of others. Jesus teaches us that we are first called to be faithful to God’s call in our life. Only then will we know real satisfaction, only then will we be full. Secondly, Jesus faces the temptation of power. It would have been all too easy for Jesus to adopt an authoritarian approach, bending others to his will and the will of God. He knew what we all too often forget, that God gives us all free will. We have the gift of choice. God will never force us to follow his ways. But only when we choose to follow Him will we be filled with the Spirt that brings God’s power into our lives. And finally, Jesus faces the temptation of glory. Again, we all too easily fall into the temptation of thinking that we are at the centre of our universe, and we all too easily make decisions that draw attention to ourselves. Jesus once again rejects that temptation, choosing rather to give his life freely as the sacrifice that once and for all restored the relationship between heaven and earth. As we begin to face the temptation of falling away from our Lenten promises, we remember the example of Jesus and continue to journey with him through this holy season.
