Autumn Term

14 JUNE 2021 Issue 1 : 4th September 2020

Dear Parents, What a week! Values Week is always a joyful time, but this year has been particularly special. There have been daily assemblies (with an absolute belter delivered on Character by Hannah, our Head Girl, on the subject of her great-great grandmother Elsie Knocker and her incredible achievements during WWI), a pilgrimage to Guildford Cathedral (with only a slight detour), a sign language lesson, Immersive Theatre experiences ('How Compassionate Are You?'), the grand unveiling of our bubbled school productions The Show must Go On, a transcendental Evensong, a nature walk, a diversity celebration, daily visits to equestrian, online volunteering and charitable activities, the monumental achievement that is iPrayonline (Deacon Simon is a true whizz), and two, massive Art projects. The origami butterflies are adorning the Dining Hall and the textile hearts are in the Chapel, both now exhibited for the year to remind us of Compassion. The Eco Council conducted a litter pick, and the Boarders invited their Day Girl friends to their international supper. Today, the Sixth Form are conducting a colour run, mooted by Libby back in the dim mists of time and finally coming to fruition. Mr O'Farrell will be relieved to remove the coloured powder that has been living in his office for eighteen months. The piece de resistance is our aerial drone photograph, hastily re-arranged to avoid the deluge. The whole school turned out in bubbles to create an enormous compassionate heart, and the effect is wonderful. It will be a reminder in years to come of the truly strange circumstances of 2021. An anecdote that needs sharing about the photograph: my Year 7 English group were chatting about the drone shot happening the next period, and asked: 'Well, is Twinkle going to be in it?' Good question; he is our mascot after all. I demurred, worried that yet another short notice request might be too much for a very busy staff. 'But you're the Head, you can sort it out!'. That told me. Readers, Twinkle is in it. My own poor contribution to this amazing week was leading Breakaoke - huge, huge fun. Playlist available on request. There is no greater celebration of our school values of Faith, Character, Community, Compassion and Intellect than Values Week, and it is worth reminding all this happens, broadly, around lessons: breaktimes, lunchtimes, after school. My enormous thanks to everyone involved, to all staff who shouldered the logistics and who contributed at an already busy time, to the pupils for throwing themselves in and for leading so many parts of it, and of course, to Lucy-Kate, our Senior Prefect (Values). She has been outstanding. In other news, please note the separate communication re: end of term events in light of the Government announcement on Monday. My apologies in the delay, but guidance needed scrutinising, and the deadline for submitting our Teacher Assessed Grades for Years 11 and 13 was looming! It has been wonderful seeing these girls in the Sixth Form for their A Level transition programmes and Pre-U courses. Until next week. Best wishes, Dr Claire McShane

BOARDING NEWS Last weekend we had a fabulous trip to Covent Garden, it was a gloriously hot day with entertainment in the streets. The girls enjoyed a nice lunch, ice creams and shopped till they dropped. Thank you, Mr Gill, for driving us there. It was our Gappy, Miss Natalie's last trip to London. Natalie has been with us for 18 months. The boarders wrote cards and said goodbye to Natalie on Tuesday evening. We are so thankful to have had Natalie with us and are grateful for her help! This weekend Miss Mentz is taking the girls to Guildford and doing a spot of baking on Sunday.

SIXTH FORM NEWS News from the Sixth Form this week from our Deputy Head Girl, Imogen L. Recently we have launched our very own student magazine, which has been a real success! All of the student leadership team have worked really hard over the last few months to produce an outstanding magazine written and edited by the students of St T's, for the students of St T's. We hope to have more students involved in our second issue, which is due for publication in the Autumn Term. We would like to thank the 2020 Student Leadership team for the initial ideas and support. We wanted to share our first edition with you all and therefore, please see a copy of Edition 1: Summer Term Student Magazine that is attached here. This week Abi H our Prep Prefect ran a workshop for Year 6 students in our Prep School about their transition to Year 7. Mrs Irons, the Deputy Headteacher of the Prep School said that the presentation was excellent and that all of the Year 6 girls now 'feel much more reassured about their transition to Senior School'. The prep school really appreciated Abby's work and all the effort that went into such a valuable workshop. A huge well done to Abi H, the lower school prefect and her team who have been down to Prep School to help the transitioning girls into the Senior School, for their excellent work. We hope we can now make this an annual event! Next week we are looking forward to continuing to welcome Year 11 students in our Sixth Form for their A Level Transition Programme. Year 12 have a special enrichment talk from Year 13 student LJ who has made a short film for her Undergraduate Seminar work in our Pre University Programme and Year 13 are enjoying their Pre University Programme Workshops; up next week is Cooking for Uni with Miss Bates and a relaxation workshop.

MUSIC NEWS On Monday 21st June, there will be a Visiting Professional String Quartet, who will give a composition workshop to our A level Music girls; Lara and Ella. The girls will present their string quartet compositions to the visiting musicians who will then go into a discussion about how they could improve their work. It will be a hands on, two way workshop where the girls can ask the musicians to experiment with sounds, and the players can show techniques and musical ideas to the girls. This is a really exciting event and such a great opportunity for the girls to improve their composition skills. Mr Tim Caister, Director of Music

WALK TO GUILDFORD CATHERDRAL On Thursday 17 June, during Values Week some girls from Years 10-13 walked along the stunningly beautiful Pilgrim’s Way from St Teresa’s to Guildford Cathedral. The walk was 18km and almost all off road. Once at the Cathedral they were invited in for a special guided tour. Then a mini bus returned the girls back to school later in the afternoon. As you can see 33,000 steps were achieved on the day!

Not only did we have an incredible half term week with our Pony Days, but we said goodbye to Ellie as she set off to her new home on Friday 4th June. Arnie and Sky will also be leaving us at the end of the term to start their new chapters. We are on the lookout for horses to join STE and have a couple in the line up already. However this does mean that horse availability will be even tighter for the second half of the term until we can replace the amazing Ellie, Arnie and Sky. We also have three tickets going for a trip to the International Horse Show on Thursday 16th December 2021. Please contact the office to find out pricings if you are interested.

Welcome to iPrayONLINE

A key feature of Values Week each year has been iPray. This year, to overcome the challenges of COVID, we have devised iPrayOnline - a set of 9 virtual prayer spaces. There has been the option to light a virtual candle for someone who needs a prayer, make a virtual LOVE HEART to say ‘thank you’ to God for a loved one, ask God one of those knotty questions, complete some mindful colouring, play the Praise and Worship Jukebox and much more.

Join In You can view all the activities by clicking here (Please note: you will need to access the file using your child’s Office 365 account to be able to complete the online surveys.) Alternatively, click here to Light a Candle, Make a LOVE HEART or ask a Question for God. We hope you enjoy the prayer activities as much as the girls have!
