BOARDERS GO TO OXFORD The boarders enjoyed exploring the town on an open top bus tour - they listened to the audio as we drove around the town. It turned out to be a dry sunny day - we were all very grateful and sat on the top deck! We stopped and shopped and walked through the streets and admired the beautiful buildings. The evening was spent playing Basketball; even I joined in and scored a few hoops! On Sunday, the girls made Mother's Day letters to send home ready for the end of the month. Next weekend we look forward to Kingston and baking. Mrs Wragg, Deputy Head of Boarding

Eco Tips of the week: Many garden centres accept washed plastic pots once you have finished with them, and Knights Garden Centres have suggested these uses for old plastic pots: Click here to find out more.

Ms Hobkinson will continue with the World Scholar's Cup this half term each Thursday at 4:30pm in the Library. Excitingly, St Teresa's will host the London-Surrey Round of the World Scholar's Cup from 21 - 22 April. More information about WSC may be found here: https://www.scholarscup.org/calendar/878-londonsurrey-round/. Enrichment Society will make a return in the summer term.

EASTER MUSIC COURSE 2022! This year’s course will take place from Monday 11th to Thursday 14th April. This will be the 10th anniversary of this course at school directed by Mrs Yalden. The course is open to girls and boys from Year 3-Year 9 from all schools who have passed Grade 1 on their instrument.

ST TERESA’S WEEKLY QUIZ ACCUMULATOR Please click here for this week’s quiz.

Still at the top of the charts we have St Dominic and Head Girl Team but, the gap between bottom and top is narrow so a couple of high scoring entries from any house or year group could still take the crown.

MEDICAL NEWS Year 9 DTP & Men ACWY Vaccination The Immunisation Team are due to attend St Teresa’s on 30 March to offer the DTP & Men ACWY vaccination to those consented. The consent form will close at 4pm on Wednesday 23 March 2022.

If you have any questions on any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact us. Mrs S Papageorgiou Lead School Nurse

THE PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE BRAIN St Teresa’s would like to invite you to a presentation by Dr Guy Sutton on 24 March 18.30-20.30 in Mairlot Hall Tickets available via Eventbrite please click here to book your FREE tickets. The lecture will introduce basic structure and function of the brain before moving to applied areas such as recent work studying brain changes during space travel. We will explore emerging technologies such as brain organoids (growing human brain tissue in the laboratory) and the use of brain computer interfaces to permit movement in paralysed patients and to control prosthetic limbs in amputees. In the final part of the lecture, we will turn our attention to the next twenty years and beyond: translating our thoughts into sound, interacting with mobile phones and electronic devices through thought, the possibility of telepathy and cognitive augmentation through neural implants What are the ethical dimensions of such research and how far should we go? Brain-nerd heaven! Mr Gill, Head of Psychology

SPANISH TRIP TO THE THEATRE On Monday 7 March our A level Spanish students, and some girls in Year 11 who love Spanish, went to Cervantes Theatre in London to see the play “La Casa de Bernarda Alba “. Enacted in its original Spanish, it had plenty of rich visual and aural imagery to stimulate the senses. Federico Garcia Lorca’s story of a family of women in 1930s Spain, dominated and repressed by the matriarch Bernarda Alba, is a powerful dramatic classic. The play is part of the A Level Spanish course and as such A level students have to write a 300 words essay about it. Our students enjoyed the performance so much that they were entranced by the tragic and moving ending. If you are interested in going to the Cervantes theatre to see plays performed in Spanish, please go to the link for more information https://www.cervantestheatre.com/home/ If you are studying or reading “La Casa de Bernarda Alba” you can check the Cervantes Theatre Educational website, for educational resources, https://schools.cervantestheatre.com/ Mrs Gonzales-Weekes, Head of Spanish

YEAR 11 GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP Our highlights were seeing with our own eyes the dramatic landforms of the famous Jurassic Coastline of Dorset. The girls also enjoyed a game of Danish Longball at the PGL Osmington Bay Centre and a trip to watch a movie at Weymouth cinema.

SIXTH FORM NEWS This week was Science Week so in Whole School Assembly on Monday we had a surprise and watched some astonishing experiments! There were experiments involving fire, explosions and the presenter lying on a bed of nails; this was an excellent start to Science Week for everyone. There have been several activities throughout the week for all year groups to get involved in the science fun! Some of the girls in Year 12, Emma P and Ella W, went to Med Soc on Tuesday and learnt augmentation reality. They put a T-Shirt on and when they held the iPad up to it, it showed the organs of the body so they could explore the different pathways. They both found it very fascinating. After school on Wednesday, the outgoing Student Leadership Team and the new Student Leadership Team were invited by Dr McShane to a celebratory tea in the Boardroom to congratulate the outgoing team on all their work over the past year and to welcome the incoming team. It was a lovely way for us all to get together and celebrate the work the outgoing team have achieved.

The whole school had Pastoral Check-ins on Thursday afternoon and the Sixth Form girls had a selection of various activities going on. All students had a one to one mentoring meeting with their Form Tutor during the afternoon to support their pastoral wellbeing. Alongside this, we had the option to watch the film ‘Wild Child’ in the Lecture theatre whilst snacking on popcorn; playing board games in the Common Room whilst having cookies or, to attend a coursework and study support session in the Reading Room. It was a fantastic afternoon to have a relaxing time and to be able to have a mentoring meeting with our Form Tutor. Some of the Prefects were allocated a year group within the school to assist in helping out during the afternoon. This included chatting to younger years, supporting with mentoring and, doing mindful activities with them such as colouring. There was a Meet the Art Applicant Event on Tuesday lunchtime for all year groups. Some of our Year 12 Art A-Level students attended this and found it beneficial to find out how Art A-Level is helpful to them. They went through why they should study Art and carry on with it after school. Some of the Year 13 Art students, Amberleigh, Lucy-Kate and Scarlett talked about where they are going to study Art at University and what course they will do. Miss Shear talked about the different career paths that are available to go down after you finish further education, and how an art degree can benefit you within the Art industry. Our Academic Prefects, Kirsten and Jess, are introducing tutoring for Year 10 and 11 students. They will be tutored by Year 12 students and will be able to arrange sessions that work for each other. They have created an incredible poster so please look at the information on it if you are interested. It is a great way to get ideas from students about your subjects. Next week some Sixth Form students are completing their TEFL qualification, and we are launching the Easter events for the school. I look forward to updating you on what we get up to next week and I hope you have a restful weekend. Emma W (Deputy Head Girl)

TRIP TO OXFORD UNIVERSITY On Tuesday Dr Poffley and Mrs Randall took a group of highachieving girls from Years 10 and 11 to visit the University of Oxford. In the morning they met with admissions tutors from Dr Poffley's old college, Wadham, to find out about what life at Oxford is like and how to prepare for applying in the years to come. The girls were impressed by the college's Jacobean architecture, grand dining hall and rich history, and asked lots of interesting questions about student societies, tutorial arrangements and Oxford's many libraries. After a short tour of the city centre, taking in several other colleges, faculty buildings and the Bodleian Library, we walked along to the Pitt Rivers Museum, where the girls spent an hour learning about aspects of the University's cultural and scientific collections. Some of the art students took some amazing photographs of artefacts to incorporate into their GCSE work. The day finished off in a style very familiar to Dr Poffley from his student days with ice cream at G&Ds opposite Christchurch College.

SCIENCE WEEK AND CSI EVENING To continue our celebrations of British Science Week, on Monday and Tuesday we welcomed pupils and parents from both St Teresa's School and Cranmore School to join us for a CSI event. We were fortunate to have an ex-Metropolitan Police Detective, Chief Inspector Simon Harding, to give us an insight into the process of investigating a murder and how the various science specialists assist in solving a crime. This fabulous talk was the perfect start to the evening which then saw families given a (thankfully fabricated!) murder to investigate and solve; Dr McShane had been electrocuted in her office! The evening comprised several different methods of forensic testing including chromatography, blood testing and fingerprint analysis, which turned out to be very tricky. All the families involved did a super job and the correct suspect was identified as the culprit.

Congratulations to the winners and we hope everyone enjoyed their evening. Mrs Pearson

MUSIC NEWS Please do come to our Classical Concert on Thursday 24 March at 19.00. The concert features a special guest former pupil, now a professional violinist with her Ventapane violin dated 1790, and a Philip Ihle copy of a Stradivarius violin, plus period instrument hand horns and a classical piano dated 1798.

ART NEWS ART PATHWAYS : Meet the Applicant This week, all students from Year 7 to Year 12 had the opportunity to learn more about studying the Creative Arts at a higher level. Our Year 13 Art, Photography and Textiles students delivered an informative presentation about their experience of studying both GCSE and A Level at St Teresa’s and the support and guidance that they have been given when applying for both Foundation, Diploma and undergraduate courses. This highlighted how our Art & Design department excels, giving foundation level training and developing the creative subject to a very high standard. The audience where asked: “Why study art?” and watch an insightful Tate reflection that outlined the viewpoints of famous artists, writers and actors, questioning why they personally think art is important within education, especially from an early age. The Year 13s discussed their experience of the Art application process, emphasising the importance of preparing an outstanding portfolio of work. Their incredible work was shown to the girls, in turn inspiring all. A big thank you to Lucy-Kate, Amberleigh, Holly and Scarlett, as well as Miss Shear and Mrs Uren for giving the girls this talk. Charlotte R Art Captain

PERFORMING ARTS NEWS Year 10 Dance GCSE students trip to Move It, Excel London Year 10 Dance GCSE students, and a few members of the Senior Dance Company, attended Move It on Friday March 11 at London’s Excel. The event is the world’s largest dance exhibition and brings together the top Dance Companies, schools and studios in the UK to perform, inform and inspire young dancers. Our Dance students enjoyed every exhilarating moment of their experience and enjoyed attending classes in hip hop, contemporary and commercial dance, watching showcases from the top dance schools and students in the country and even taking to the Freestyle stage themselves to share their talent with the Excel audience.

GCSE and A Level Practical Examinations Our GCSE and A level students have been undertaking their final practical examinations this week and performing an array of challenging, dramatic and diverse scripted pieces. The students have worked hard on developing their characterisation, skills and performances through a dynamic, inspiring and rigid rehearsal process and working with various rehearsal techniques, practitioners and approaches. Good luck to all of our A Level and GCSE students.

RAISING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN with Alicia Drummond, therapist, parenting expert, and founder of The Wellbeing Hub. This webinar is now available in the resources section of The Wellbeing Hub. It is for parents of children aged 2-12 and explores the four pillars of resilience. It looks at how we can help children develop the positive mindsets & attitudes, self efficacy, resourcefulness, and creativity that will allow them to become independent and courageous individuals who can cope with life’s vicissitudes. Supporting young people in an uncertain world following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by Alicia Drummond, Therapist & Founder of The Wellbeing Hub. The past two years have taken their toll on the wellbeing of so many people and the last thing we all needed was more uncertainty and drama, but here we are, Russia has invaded Ukraine, and none of us knows how this war will play out. Amongst children and young people anxiety levels are high, and many are feeling frightened as they grapple, perhaps for the first time, with the possibility of war in Europe, and nuclear threat. We share our top tips on how to support young people through these uncertain times. This is a great one to share

We hope that you all have had a lovely week! Please make sure that coats are brought up to ride, even if you don’t end up wearing them! The weather is very unpredictable at the moment, and while we do have some showerproof coats for you to borrow, it is best to bring your own just in case! Please also make sure that all riders turn up with time to spare before their lessons! This will give you time to get your horse ready and out to the arena. We will also ensure that instructors and yard staff help you get ready so that you can make the most of your riding lesson on the horse! Just a reminder: We are not running riding lessons or clubs on the last week of the term. Our termly lessons will end on Saturday 26th March.

This Week We remembered this week St Patrick, whose feast day fell on Thursday. Little is known of St Patrick’s life, except that he lived on the western coast of Britain, was abducted by pirates and sold into slavery, spent six years as a swineherd, during which God spoke to his heart, spent time training for the priesthood in France and then returned to Ireland where he was an extraordinary missionary. From the youngest age he had a profound sense that God was calling him to a special mission. In the course of this mission, legend tells us, he used the shamrock as a potent symbol of the God we believe in, a God who is Father, Son and Spirit. This was central to his teaching and a reminder to us that whenever we make that sign on our bodies, we are recalling our Baptism, and remembering, at the beginning of our prayer, that we are always in the presence of God, and as we end our prayer, that we once again are sent out on our Mission as Patrick was.

Thank you We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who has contributed to the six minibus loads of items for our Ukraine appeal. May the God of peace bring a blessing to all those who will receive our offerings over the coming weeks. Amen.
