World Children’s Day

In 2023, Pope Francis declared that the Catholic Church’s first World Children’s Day would take place on 25-26 May 2024, this will fall in half term so on Monday, in assembly, the Chaplaincy Team told us all about it.

The idea for this special day came from a nine-year-old boy called Alessandro who sent a message to Pope Francis, saying how good it would be if children from different countries could come together as sisters and brothers. A World Children’s Day would remind us that we all belong to God’s family and encourage us to pray and work together for peace.

Pope Francis often tells us how important it is to listen to others with our heart as well as our ears, and to think carefully about what they are saying, as this is the example Jesus gave us. Listening like Jesus means we begin to understand and learn from each other. Listening with our heart is the way we grow in friendship and love.

During this week, we have been trying to listen with our hearts when spending time with family and friends. Some of us got together to pray the rosary for peace and others have sent Pope Francis drawings of our hopes and desires for a better world. You can find more information on the official website:

Year 3 Science Experiment

With their science topic of "Forces", Year 3 undertook an experiment to understand the effect of friction. They recorded how far a toy car travelled down different surfaces including wood, bubble wrap, foil and silk fabric. The tests had to be carried out 3 times to ensure the results were consistent, as well as beginning from the same place every time. Everyone agreed that bubble wrap was an effective material for creating a lot of friction and stopping the cars.

This Week

With the passing of fifty days since the Feast of Easter and the celebration of the Resurrection, this week came the celebration of Pentecost. This feast was originally a Jewish festival, remembering the harvest. For the disciples of Jesus, it marked the moment where their fear, following the death of Jesus, was replaced by the joy of the resurrection and the desire to share the Good News of God’s love with the whole of the world.

Surrounded by the great symbols of God’s presence - the wind and the fire - the disciples realised that they were surrounded by God’s Spirit who empowered and enlivened them.

St Augustine helps us to understand God’s Holy Spirit. He reminds us that God is love, as it says in the Sacred Scripture. For God to be love there must be a person who loves, referring to the Father, a person who is beloved, referring to the Son, and the love that they share, referring to the Holy Spirit. God’s Holy Spirit is the love that God shares with all of us.

Perhaps the most beautiful example of this is the passage from Psalm 130 where we have the image of a mother cradling their child. God loves the child, just as He loved His own Son Jesus. The child is loved by God, just as Jesus loved. And the love that they share is the love of the Holy Spirit.

And when we, like the disciples, are enlivened by God’s Holy Spirit, we too will be able to share the Good News of God’s love to our neighbours and to the world.
