MARCH 2023

Message from the Headmaster

The CPA ball was an incredible success on Saturday and a wonderful way to celebrate Cranmore’s 55th anniversary. The Sports Hall was transformed for the evening and parents and staff thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful entertainment that brought our school community together. Thank you to the CPA parents for their heroic efforts; it was a very memorable occasion.

On Monday, parents from across the school took the opportunity to join us for tours of the new Science and Technology Centre, which were conducted by our Year 9 pupils. The feedback on the classroom layouts, the abundance of space and the wealth of resources was very well received and the pupils were incredibly proud to show off the facility that will be open for lessons when they return in April.

There was great excitement on Wednesday with the House Music Competition across the Upper Prep and Senior School. The inter-house rivalry was evident with pupils and staff vying for the trophy. Congratulations to Stokes House who were announced as the winners with their rendition of the Beatles classic, Yellow Submarine

Our Lower Prep Music Assembly was another opportunity for pupils to display their musical talents at the end of term. The pupils played their instruments with skill and confidence during the performances and the choir found time to involve parents, staff and pupils in their pre-singing warm-up.

We were delighted to welcome pupils and staff from Glenesk for a musical afternoon on Thursday. After their music workshop, the pupils proudly performed an uplifting repertoire including songs and instrumental

House Music Competition

The theme for this year’s House Music competition was the House colour. All pupils in Years 4 to 9 took part in this event on Wednesday afternoon and it was adjudicated by Mrs Thornton and Mr Cox.

Stokes were the eventual winners, with their rendition of ‘Yellow Submarine’. Congratulations!

School Council Hot Chocolate Sale

Our School Council held a break time hot chocolate sale on Thursday for Upper Prep pupils. We raised £168 which will go towards purchasing a clock for the bus shelter in the main car park.

School Council Visit to Parliament

Last Thursday, the Upper Prep members of the School Council visited Parliament. The pupils enjoyed a fascinating tour of the Houses of Parliament including Westminster Hall and were able to listen to live debates in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The pupils also took part in a workshop to learn more about the lawmaking process. Towards the end of the visit, we had a question and answer session with the MP for Mole Valley, Sir Paul Beresford.

Upper Prep Chapel Visit

Prep visited the Chapel this week to take some time for quiet reflection and prayer before the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Lower Prep Cups and Awards

The Lower Prep gathered together on Monday for our Cups and Awards Assembly. It was wonderful to come together to celebrate all the children’s hard work and achievements this term.

Congratulations to Bowen House for gaining the highest number of merits over this term!

Lower Prep School Council Charity Bake Sale

The Lower Prep School Council did an amazing job baking some delicious Easter treats to sell and raise money for our chosen charity Rainbow’s.

Lower Prep RE Monitors

The RE monitors have done a fantastic job this term, in helping foster our caring Christian community and ethos within their classes. They have been responsible for leading the class prayers, and ensuring the prayer tables are relevant, with the correct colour cloths and displays.

Year 2’s Significant People Afternoon

Year 2 had an afternoon to conclude their history unit about significant people. The children each chose a significant person who interested them and learnt a few facts about them. Some students dressed up as their person and others brought in props. They shared interesting facts within their classes and also with different people in the year group. Some significant people who were in attendance were: Anne Frank, Neil Armstrong, Albert Einstein, Usain Bolt and Vivienne Westwood.

Year 2 Trip to the Roald Dahl Museum

Year 2 had a wonderful trip to the Roald Dahl Museum in Great Missenden and enjoyed participating in a character crafting workshop. The children enjoyed the village walk up to Roald Dahl’s grave, linking the clues seen along the way to his various books.

Year 1 Trip to Godstone Farm

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed meeting the animals at Godstone Farm on Friday last week.

Music News

Congratulations to all the boys who performed in the Spring Soiree on Thursday evening. Mrs Thornton, the music staff and I felt really proud of what the pupils achieved and the high standard of music they displayed.

On Friday, Mrs Brewster, our theory and oboe teacher, gave a demonstration to two of the Upper Prep classes. Not only did she perform on her oboe but she also played her cor anglais (pictured). Much like the oboe, this beautiful instrument has a double reed but in contrast, has a deeper, fuller tone. Any pupil wishing to have a taster session on either of these instruments, or in fact any of the instruments taught here at Cranmore, should approach Mrs Thornton or Mr Harris immediately.

• Well done to Cranmore Singers and Junior Chamber Choir for performing in Wednesday’s music assembly. Both choirs showcased a warm-up and song that they have been working on this term, which included some audience participation!

• Congratulations also to Otis P and Basty B for performing superb solos on the cello and bassoon.

• Congratulations to Alexander D (6EF) on passing his Grade 2 Theory of Music with Merit.

Sport Update

As our successful hockey season came to a close, our final matches were against Hoe Bridge. On Friday, the U11s rugby 7s team finished top of their pool at the Rosslyn Park 7s. With the summer term just around the corner, cricket skills and nets have been taking place in all lessons and after-school training.

Thought for the week:

How will you embrace the mystery of salvation?

A Prayer for Lent

Lord, no longer will I shut the door when I hear you knocking. Father, by faith I happily accept your gift of salvation. God, I am ready to trust you as my Lord and Saviour. Thank you for taking over my sins and granting me the gift of eternal life. Amen.

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS FOR LENT 2023

To deepen our knowledge of the Master, to fully understand and embrace the mystery of his salvation, accomplished in total self-giving inspired by love, we must allow ourselves to be taken aside by him and to detach ourselves from mediocrity and vanity. We need to set out on the journey, an uphill path that, like a mountain trek, requires effort, sacrifice and concentration.

Let us Pray: Our Father

Hail Mary

1 minute silence

“Here is a first test: what is faith for me? If it is mainly a duty or a bargaining chip, we are off track, because salvation is a gift and not a duty, it is free and cannot be bought.”

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
