31 OCTOBER 2022 Message from the Headmaster

I was delighted to welcome everyone back to Cranmore with renewed energy after the half-term break for what promises to be a busy and exciting second half of term. Just before the break we had a superb Action Day with pupils throughout the Upper Prep and Senior School displaying their individual talents and working on important presentation skills. There were some impressive and entertaining performances that our community used to raise funds for our chosen charity, Action in Africa. There are some beaming smiles in the Chronicle from the pupils involved in Book Week. It is immensely encouraging to see such enthusiasm for reading and creative writing, and I know the pupils thoroughly enjoyed our recent author visits. Congratulations to all those who took part in the various competitions. Black History Month was observed with pupils in 6WL presenting their assembly on work done by members of the black community and their outstanding contributions to society. Year 2 celebrated sporting stars who have overcome obstacles to achieve great success. I know we are all looking forward to the CPA fireworks display this weekend on the Henderson Fields. It is a highlight of the Cranmore calendar and promises to be another spectacular event, I look forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow night.

Mr Everitt

Action Day My congratulations to all the boys in the Upper Prep and Senior school who displayed their talents at the two Action Days before half-term. From magicians to musicians and actors to readers, there were so many wellrehearsed acts on show. This event was a charity fundraiser and monies raised will be sent to our chosen charity, Action in Africa, who help two communities in Tanzania. Mr Harris, Director of Music

Book Week: Competition Prize Winners and Book Fair We held two competitions for the Upper Prep pupils during Book Week, each related to the author visits we had by Tom Palmer and David Farr. The Tom Palmer competition was a short quiz about the author and the David Farr competition involved selecting the one book they would save if the library burnt down, an event which happens in The Book of Stolen Dreams. I shall be creating a display in the library with all of the books pupils chose.

Congratulations to the winners who received books as their prizes:

Book Week: Lower Prep Joint Story During Book Week, our Lower Prep pupils put their creative writing skills to use and wrote this story together. We hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we did. Well done, Lower Prep!

Once upon a time there lived a very sad yellow dinosaur called Frankie. His home was made of sticks and yucky leaves with a chimney made of chocolate. All the other dinosaurs across the land would roar and roar at poor Frankie. The problem was Frankie could not roar.

Frankie felt sad and lonely. He was worried he would never be able to roar. Some of the dinosaurs even laughed at him. But, there was one dinosaur who wanted to help. He was a green dinosaur called Roxy Lox.

Roxy Lox took him to his house on the beach. They swam in the sea and made amazing sandcastles. Roxy Lox opened his mouth and showed him how to roar and breathe fire. All of sudden, Frankie was able to roar a gigantic ROAR. They could hear his roar from the South Pole!

The problem was, Frankie’s roar was a bit different. When he roared he breathed out ice! Freezing cold ice.

Suddenly, the sea turned into ice!

Roxy and Frankie went ice skating. It was really fun!

All of a sudden Frankie fell over and the ice cracked!

In a flash Roxy ran to grab Frankie. A giant fish appeared out of the crack to come and eat them…..

Unfortunately, Roxy couldn’t get to Frankie before the fish leapt out of the water. Suddenly, Frankie had an idea. He let out the biggest ROAR ever and created the most secure, strong, thick ice defence. Roxy and Frankie were safe. However, the fish was stuck, he couldn’t get past the enormous barrier but he also couldn’t get back in the water, the hole had been frozen over! Roxy slid over to the poor helpless fish and breathed a small blast of fire, making a hole, just big enough for the fish to slip back into the sea. Roxy and Frankie happily ice skated back to land.

Black History Month Activities In Year 2 we celebrated many incredible sporting stars who have achieved great things in their sporting careers and overcome many difficulties. Pupils chose one who inspired them most and enjoyed some mindfulness colouring on the theme.

Our Year 4 pupils produced some fantastic work on French-speaking Afro-Caribbean countries.

On Monday 10th October, 6WL presented their class assembly to the Upper Prep. As part of their study of jobs and industries in Geography, the class researched some of the jobs that ‘extraordinary ordinary’ members of the black community do for the UK. This included the work of architects, coal miners, NHS nurses and activists, and the valuable contribution they have made to society. The boys researched and compiled the information themselves and presented confidently to the school.

If you would like to read more about Black History, there is a reading list on the VLE here:

Firstly, they located China in an Atlas and on the globe and investigated the distance between China and the UK. Next, they sang a song to help learn some greetings in Mandarin. Then, they used the virtual reality headsets and visited Bejing, the Great Wall of China, a tunnel in the mountains, a lantern and dragon festival. Finally, they used gold and silver paint to writing special words using Mandarin symbols. Mrs James, Mrs Stefano and Mrs Carpenter

The football theme our first week back at school has been 1 v 1s. Head of Football, Mr Cox alongside our other football specialist coaches have been making sure every pupil has been developing this skill. Alongside lots of quality practice, House Football has been taking place throughout the year groups.

Yesterday, our U9s enjoyed fixtures against KCS and U8s played in a triangular against RGS Prep and Milbourne Lodge. Today, our U10s play in a block fixture against Milbourne Lodge. Good luck to our U8s at the Cumnor Tournament today.

Rising Star in History Congratulations to Hugo in Year 5 on his Rising Star in History award. Hugo invested a huge amount of time and effort in his History homework before half-term, making a board game called Romano. This was loosely based on a well-known murder mystery board game involving weapons, locations and different characters. Hugo’s game was highly intricate; showing considerable understanding of Roman life, towns, architecture and language. His own classmates felt it deserved more than a Supermerit, and burst into spontaneous applause when Hugo demonstrated the game in class. Year 5 are really enjoying their Roman studies which this half term focus on the invasion of Britain, Boudicca and life in the Roman Army. The History Department

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

All Saints’ Day

Thought for the week: How will you answer the call to lead a saintly life? A prayer for All Saints’ Day Dear God, thank you for the example of the Saints. I desire to join in their company, worshipping you forever in Heaven. Please help me follow their footsteps, and yours, Jesus Christ. Please help me to conform myself to Your image, seeking Your will in all things, as the Saints did. Please help me to devote myself, and all that I do, to Your glory, and to the service of my neighbours. Amen. REFLECTION Monday marked All Saints’ Day. On this solemn Feast of All Saints, the Church invites us to reflect on the great hope, that is based on Christ’s Resurrection: Christ is risen and we will also be with him. The Saints are the most authoritative witnesses of Christian hope, because they lived it fully in their lives, amidst joys and sufferings, putting into practice the Beatitudes that Jesus preached. Let us answer His call to do the same.

Let us Pray:

Our Father Hail Mary 1 minute silence

“The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, the happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence.” Pope Francis

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
