It has been a fantastic final week of term at Cranmore. On Monday, pupils were inspired at a career talk by Mr Young who shared his experiences as a camera operator while he was travelling all over the world. He explained how he worked on movie sets such as Harry Potter, recorded footage from inside craters of a volcano for documentaries, and, most interestingly from a pupil perspective, was involved in the Qatar World Cup fixtures. Our pupils were also fascinated by the insight he gave into the control of cameras using advanced technology from thousands of miles away during a typhoon in Hong Kong.
Our Carol Services are a fitting end to the week. I was immensely impressed with the performances of the pupils on both evenings, they were a real credit to the school. Thank you to everyone involved in the preparation for the celebrations and for all the support from our Cranmore community.
Finally, we have accomplished an incredible amount this term and supported numerous charities. I would like to wish everyone a well-deserved rest and peaceful Christmas break and I am looking forward to seeing you all refreshed in the New Year.

Talk by
to Year 7—9 Pupils
On Monday 12th December, Cranmore was pleased to welcome Doug Young, the father of Theo in 4FH, to speak about his career as a cameraman. The pupils were fascinated to hear about his experiences of filming with cameras attached to planes, helicopters and cars and to learn how much problem-solving his job entails, in often quite perilous situations. We were particularly lucky to hear about his more recent involvement with sporting events, including Wimbledon, the Olympics and over the last couple of weeks in Qatar at the World Cup. For me, one of the most interesting things we learnt was that, once the camera has been set up in, for example, the back of the goal, the cameraman will be working remotely at quite a distance, rather than being physically present in the stadium.
We are very grateful to both of Theo's parents for the time they gave up to make this presentation to us. I am sure that, as a result of this talk, there will now be some budding future cameramen at Cranmore!

to entertain the residents. We sang Christmas carols and played festive melodies to a large gathering of residents and staff. We also shared some beautiful hand-made Christmas cards with the residents which had been made and written by some of the other Cranmore boys. One of the residents was 102 years old and in such fine voice! After our performances, the boys took time to chat with the residents and wished them all a very merry Christmas. This was a wonderfully humbling and rewarding experience for us all and is certainly a trip which we will repeat next year. My thanks to Mrs Thornton and especially the pupils, who showed themselves to be very polite and well-mannered gentlemen throughout.

Sports Roundup
The rugby season finished with some outstanding performances form our U12s and U13s against Sevenoaks school. Our rowers have continued to use the facilities at Walton RC, both on the river and the rowing machines in the clubhouse. Whilst Year 7 & 8 have continued with having the option of multi-sports.
On Tuesday 13th December, the sports scholars and performance group had a presentation from Chris Finill, who has run every London Marathon since it started in 1981. He is only 1 of 7 that has run every marathon since it began. Chris talked about how he first started running at 9 years of age and how he continued to run in the 2018 London marathon despite breaking his arm after 3 miles! The talk focused on the traits of hard work, determination and resilience.
The boys got to see all 42 medals from each Marathon and the year 9 were able to have a photo with him.

Christmas time is drawing near,
Festive cheer for all to hear, Hustle and bustle all around, Everywhere a cheerful sound.
The shops are crowded, Busy streets come to life, friends and family gather together, What a magical time to be alive!
The church bells ring, The angelic voices in the choirs sing, Heavenly sounds flow through the air, I stop in awe and dreamily stare.
Twinkling lights spill over the horizon, All Colors of the spectrum sparkling and shining, Every house decorated, shining bright, I cannot wait until its night.
I gaze out my window to the heavens above, The stars twinkle and sparkle above an icy blanket of snow Could it be a white Christmas this year? Oh I do hope so!
The smell of warm, roasted chestnuts fill the air, Mulled wine bubbling, children laughing on the merry go round, Joyous sounds from all over the town.
Just sixteen sleeps now until that magical day, Christ was born on Christmas Day, Spread love and joy everywhere you go, And make this Christmas the best you’ll ever know!

Thought for the week:
Advent
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favoured, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil his promises to her!”
REFLECTION
As we move through Advent, this reading from Luke prepares us to witness Christ's birth by showing us how Jesus was recognised as Israel's long-awaited Messiah even before his birth. It is appropriate in this season of Advent that we consider the role of Mary in God's plan of salvation. Mary's faith enabled her to recognise the work of God in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to everyone.
Let us Pray: Our Father Hail Mary 1 minute silence
“The Mother of the Lord has her own special presence: she is the Mother of all, regardless of ethnicity or nationality.” Pope Francis
In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
