Message from the Headmaster

Throughout the week, we helped raise awareness during Anti Bullying Week of the importance of supporting others and those in need. On Friday, we continued with this theme as pupils and staff took part in Odd Socks Day and made donations to the Anti Bullying Alliance. I would also like to thank all those families who contributed to the Shoe Box Appeal in support of such a worthy cause.

I am delighted that Mr Afana has officially launched the Digital Schoolhouse Esports Tournament for pupils at Cranmore. Together with Nintendo Switch, the Digital Schoolhouse competition offers our pupils an opportunity to take part and apply for one of the six jobs to manage and run the tournament at Cranmore. The tournament will run between November 2022 and February 2023. The winning team at Cranmore School will be competing against other regional winners, which will lead to the National Final and the Grand Final in April 2023. Our Senior pupils have also been completing the UK Bebras challenge, which introduces computational thinking to students, is organised in over 50 countries and is designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. Successful students will be invited to take part in The Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC) in January 2023.

I would like to congratulate all the Cranmore pupils who took part in the Henkes Shield on Saturday. It was another competitive spectacle and I am delighted that we have managed to tip the balance of successful victories in our favour. Another notable success was the U14 ski team on winning silver at the Surrey Championships. It is a wonderful achievement considering that a number of the participants were actually skiing up two age groups; this highlights the bright future these pupils will have in subsequent years.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Modern Studies

As part of the Modern Studies programme, Year 7 have been learning about personal finance. Early lessons explored barter, the role of money, different currencies and foreign exchange. One student was able to bring in a one billion dollar note which was very exciting although, sadly, not worth perhaps as much as expected !’

Library News—The Effingham Reading Challenge

We are pleased to announce the Effingham Reading Challenge 2022 23 which is running across Cranmore and St Teresa’s for pupils in Year 4 upwards. Pupils can read three of the books for a Bronze certificate, four for a Silver certificate and five for a Gold certificate. Pupils who would like to take part should go and see Mrs Watkinson in the Cranmore library or Mrs Clarke in the St Teresa’s library. ART COMPETITION

It is a three stage competition designed to support and encourage the development of photographic skills starting with a local heat in February, with the best entries going forward to a District competition and on to a National Final at the end of March. Entries are submitted in age groups for fairness. The initial task is submit one photograph based upon the theme, “The Beauty of Architecture” with a sentence to explain the relationship to the theme.

This competition aims to encourage young people to experiment and express their ideas and interpretation of the subject through the medium of digital photography. Judges will consider technical merit, content and composition, and imagination and style. Competitors will receive a certificate of participation with appropriate awards for the winners at all stages of the competition.

Entries for the local heat, closing date Saturday 4th February 2023, are invited on behalf of the Mole Valley Rotary Clubs and should be submitted to Mrs Sanders felicity.sanders@cranmore.org no later than Wednesday 1st February.

Anti Bullying Week

The theme for this year's Anti bullying week was Reach Out. 5FS and 9EN delivered two excellent assemblies on this topic. The school participated in variety of different activities throughout the week and it culminated in the pupils and staff wearing Odd Socks to highlight how unique we all are.

The Senior Chamber Choir performed at the Woking Music Festival on Thursday and received a well deserved Distinction. They received some extremely positive comments from the adjudicator. Well done to all pupils involved.

On Saturday, the 37th Henkes Shield took place with Cranmore taking the spoils 5.5 points to Rokeby’s 2.5. This included 5 wins and a draw from the 8 matches. Sports Roundup

This week saw the start of our rugby season. The excitement and enthusiasm has been very obvious for this change of core sports. On Wednesday, we were very fortunate to have Dorking’s RFC Director of Rugby, Armand Roux and Head of S&C Daniel Mackenzie to help with our U11s and U14s. The pupils gained so much from the visiting coaches that we will be sure to invite them back again soon.

We wish both our U11 and U13 football teams the biggest of good lucks in their respective Surrey Cups . Good luck Cranmore.

Year 6 Games

Mr Hodgson, Director of Sport This Week’s House Cup Winners Congratulations : the senior merit cup winner this week is: Tylor

Thought for the week:

Christ the King

Is it service or applause that matters to you?

Christ the King

O Lord our God, You alone are the Most Holy King. Forgive us, O Sovereign King, our sins against you.

Jesus, You are a King of Mercy. Have mercy on us, Lord, and forgive us. Amen.

POPE FRANCIS - REFLECTION ON CHRIST THE KING

Let us reflect on this: in front of Pilate, Christ says he is a king at the moment in which the crowd is against him; but when the crowd was following and acclaiming him, he remained distant from this acclamation. That is, Jesus is showing that he is sovereignly free from the desire of earthly fame and glory. And we let us ask ourselves do we know how to imitate him in this aspect? Do we know how to govern our tendency to be continuously sought after and approved, or do we do everything to be esteemed by others? So, I ask: what matters? Is it applause or service that matters about what we do, particularly concerning our Christian commitment?

Let us Pray: Our Father Hail Mary

1 minute silence

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
