BOARDING NEWS

On Saturday we went on a shopping trip to Sutton by train, it was a happy day with a few of our international students using the train for the first time. It was a cloudy chilly day but did not stop our girls from hitting the shops and having fun.

In the evening the girls put on their best outfits for a night out at the theatre! The girls were delighted to watch the Northern Ballet’s adaptation of The Nutcracker at Woking Theatre. The evening was filled with Christmas magic as well as added excitement as we were able to watch one of our own St Teresa’s Year 7 students “Evie “ light up the stage during the performance! A very special evening for the girls in the lead up to Christmas.

Evie in Year 7 was part of the Royal Northern Ballet's production of The Nutcracker at the New Victoria Theatre at Woking. She played a party-goer and was an attendant to the Sugar Plum Fairy.

On Tuesday some of the Year 13 students chose to undertake practice interviews in preparation for university and world of work interviews. The interviewer was the Oxford Alumni student, and former teacher at St Teresa's, Dr Wedlake, who asked the girls university style questions to help them with any university applications that require an interview. All the girls thoroughly benefitted from this experience and received individual feedback about their performance and how to improve.

On Wednesday current Year 6 students, who are applying to be a St Teresa's Senior School student in Year 7, had their 11+ Entrance Exams. Olivia, Pippa, Charlotte and myself in Year 13 signed in the prospective pupils and welcomed them into the school. During the examinations, lots of the Year 12 students helped as runners, which was really kind and allowed the prospective Year 7 students to get to know the Sixth Form students. Thank you to all the girls who helped.

The Year 12 buddies helped the Year 7s with their Floreat Project in their buddy session on Thursday morning before lessons. The Floreat Project is an opportunity for the Year 7 students to research something they are interested in and have a passion in. The Year 12s enjoyed hearing about the project ideas and were keen to help Year 7 to enjoy their research.

The 1st XI Hockey Team played in a Cup Match against JAGS on Thursday afternoon. It was a fantastic afternoon for hockey and well done to everyone who played, we showed great team spirit to drive to success!

On Friday after school, the FOST Christmas Fair took place. The Sixth Form students ran three stalls: Human Slot Machine, Hair Braiding, and glitter tattoos. All the Sixth Form girls enjoyed helping and took turns on the stalls. All in all it was a lovely festive way to end the week, thank you to all of the Sixth Form for helping to run the stalls.

I hope everyone has a restful weekend.

SIXTH FORM NEWS

YEAR 8 CHEMISTRY CLUB

On Wednesday 9th November the Year 8 Chemistry Club became wax sculptors. We cut up some white wax and mixed it in a test tube with some red wax. We heated the wax until it melted and then we slowly poured it onto a tile while lowering the tile slowly into cold water to form layers of wax. We repeated this process several times and we eventually created some beautiful wax sculptures. Chemistry Club takes place every Wednesday lunchtime from 1:45 in lab 32 for pupils in Year 8.

ECO COUNCIL NEWS

The Eco Council presented a wonderful Assembly to all the school on what they have achieved so far; reducing our food waste from 42 bags per week and diverting it from landfill, COP27 and what their action plan is for the remainder of the year which includes an energy audit, looking at the impact of micro plastics on the ocean and at our transport footprint. They discussed some of the forthcoming activities such as the used book sale we held on Thursday, litter picking and providing each form room with an indoor plant .

ALUMNAE EVENT

Last Friday, our recent Alumnae Leavers met for a fantastic reunion at the Royal Automobile Club in London. The evening started with a drinks reception, followed by a delicious three course meal. During the event we all enjoyed a St Teresa’s Quiz, written by our current Head Girl Team. The venue for the event was beautiful, with all the table decorations handmade by our current Year 7 students and our Art prefect Charlotte R. The winner of the Quiz was our very own Miss Nelson, with the competition being fierce from some of our other members of SLT!

The conversation and laughter flowed from this lovely group of young women all evening, it was delightful. We look forward to hosting our next alumnae event in the Summer Term and, seeing them at school.

We hope that you are all well.

As the weather is so variable at the moment, please make sure that you come with a jumper (no hoodies!) and/or a coat to wear when it’s chilly out. As we are on top of a hill, we get a bit of a cold wind when riding in the arena!

A reminder that if you wish to cancel a lesson, we do require 48hrs notice or more in order to offer credit. Any later and we are unable to fill the slot with a rider for a catch up lesson or off the waitlist.

Finally, while the weather is showing on and off rain, we’d like to remind our riders that we still run lessons in the wind and rain provided there is not a risk to anyone’s safety. As an alternative for those who don’t want to ride, then we do offer stable management lessons in the warm barn.

A new horse arrived at STE on Sunday afternoon. His name is Barney and he is a 15.1hh, 10 year old skewbald cob. He is still settling in, but is very friendly and sweet!

Christmas Holidays

The dates are available to book on the system! Please check out our online site to book your spaces now!

There was a Grassroots NSEA competition on Sunday. The ponies have also been moved up to the winter fields and are enjoying the new grass! The centre square at the Equestrian is also getting better and is starting to come together!

The horse of the week is… Oliver!

This Week

We have all become very aware that at this very moment in Egypt the leaders of the world’s nations are gathered to discuss the climate emergency at COP27. While there are always reasons to be hopeful in the wake of such events, many of us share a deep concern for the plight of our planet. We are aware that we are using the world’s resources at an unsustainable rate and that our excess has resulted in pollution that is poisoning the environment. Dependence upon the luxuries of life, most particularly unsustainable sources of energy and single use plastic is destroying ecosystems both on land and in the sea. Many of the consequences are only now coming to light, including the long-term impact on health, the damage to food supply and fertility to many of our food sources. Unquestionably the greatest tragedy is that so many people across the world have been driven into grinding poverty as a result of greed, violence and injustice.

While it is to be hoped that our leaders will make bold and decisive changes of direction as they meet, we can often be left asking ourselves ‘What difference can I make? What change can just one person make in the face of so many challenges?’ While it is certainly true that there are many changes that we can make to our day to day lifestyle perhaps more than anything else we should change our attitude. Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his Holiness the Dalai Lama have proposed a solution that everyone of us can participate in. Both of these significant individuals have faced enormous challenges in their own lives. Desmond Tutu was an outspoken critic of the evil system of apartheid in South Africa, but more significantly, having overthrown the system, he now works tirelessly for peace and reconciliation within his country . The Dalai Lama was exiled from his home country in his early 20s and has fought for the injustice both in his homeland and across the world ever since. These two characters have forged an unlikely friendship. So what is the solution that has fuelled their work and lives. The solution they propose, outlined in the book and their film, is to live a life infused with joy. Whatever the adversity and hardship that we may face we can transform that situation by consciously choosing to adopt an attitude of joy. When watching this film it is abundantly clear that not only is it an effective strategy, but it has also forged deepest of loving friendships.

As we are challenged once again to make those changes for the sake of our planet for this and for future generations, we are encouraged to learn from Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama and choose joy as our lifelong strategy!
