FESTIVAL OF IDEAS
Professor Steven Connor Director of CRASSH
We enter the new academic year with an exciting crop of conferences and new research networks, that continue to make good CRASSH's determination to make things happen that could not easily happen elsewhere in the University. We are mounting 6 conferences in the Michaelmas Term. These include Media of Hate: Representations of Religious Persecution and Repression in Early Modern Europe (3–4 October), which explores the entanglements of different media forms with the expressions of religious hatred and distrust, and Common Currency (7–9 November), which, ten years after the global financial crisis of 2009, brings together some of the leading figures in economics to try to develop a new, and expanded understanding of what economics is and might mean. Our Research Networks in particular help groups of researchers from different disciplines and different stages of their careers, from graduate students to senior professors, to develop new topics and new ways of thinking. We see these networks as hothouses for larger projects, helping to generate grant proposals, publications and collaborations. This term we have 6 new Research Networks beginning, all of them involving new departures for CRASSH and Cambridge. Archives of the Disappeared will study study cultures and lifeworlds that have been destroyed through acts of political repression and mass violence. Auralities brings together academics in literature, music, anthropology and beyond to consider the possibility that we may be entering a 'post-aural' period in sound studies. Risk and Renewal in the Pacific will provide a forum for researchers across more than six departments with an interest in questions of risk in the Pacific. CAVER, Critical Approaches to 'Vulnerability' in Empirical Research, will reflect critically on what it means to define a person or group as 'vulnerable'. The Writing Dance Workshop will ask the question 'What Do We Write About When We Write About Dance?' Solidarity Across Difference will explore the future of solidarity in increasingly globalized and politically fractious world.
As always, our funded research projects will be busy mounting events arising from their work. On 30 September, the Giving Voice to Digital Democracies team, who are exploring the social impact of Artificially Intelligent Communications Technology, will mount a workshop on 'The Future of AI: Language, Society, Technology'. The Centre for Global Knowledge Studies will continue their 'cum panis' seminars, which are a space to share work currently in progress and break bread (or cake!) with new intellectual companions. On 9 October, Sebastian Porsdam Mann (University of Copenhagen) will speak about 'Biomedical Data in the Era of Blockchain'. 'When Does Explaining Become Explaining Away?' (27 September), a woprkshop organised by the Expertise Under Pressure project, will explore the relations between explaining, accusing and excusing. We are delighted to welcome Professor Caroline Bassett as Director of Cambridge Digital Humanities, and look forward to continuing our assocation with Digital Humanities, who are mounting a two-part workshop on 18 and 25 September on the social network analysis of scientific correspondence. From 19 September to 1 November, the Alison Richard Building will be exhibiting a selection of 36 works from Yoko Ono's Grapefruit (1964/1971), as part of the YOKO ONO: LOOKING FOR… multi-site exhibition in Cambridge.

DIRECTOR’S WELCOME
We will have 20 new visiting and early career fellows in CRASSH over the course of this year, among whom we are particularly looking forward to welcoming Anni Zaidi, the winner of this year’s Nine Dots Prize. Anni will be using her time to complete her prize-winning title with Cambridge University Press, Bread, Cement, Cactus, which combines memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging rooted in her experience of contemporary life in India.
WHO’S NEW / FELLOWS Visiting Fellows Annie Zaidi Nine Dots Prize Fellow Anna Zaidi’s entry for the Nine Dots prize, Bread, Cement, Cactus, combines memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging rooted in her experience of contemporary life in India, where migration – within the country, especially from villages to cities – is high. Zaidi began her career as a reporter and has published both fiction and non-fiction.
