Mini macramĂŠ hanging LEVEL: BEGINNER

Welcome to the world of Macrame! This craft is fun and fairly easy. The exciting part is creating your own patterns and exploring how to combine knots to get pretty effects! Materials + Tools 3MM cord any color (Amazon) Hanger (Dowel rod, cleaned stick, OR large keychain ring) Scissors Clipboard or tape (to help hold while you are working)

1. Gather your supplies and cut your 3MM cord into 4 pieces approximately 2025 inches long. (Longer is better!) 2. Make the Lark's Head Knot on your chosen hanger with each cord. (See Knot Guide) 3. You will have 8 single strands. Mentally number them 1-8 from left to right. 4. Find cord #5 and hold with your left hand. This will be your Holding Cord. Take cord #4 and make a Double Half Hitch Knot. Repeat this knot with cords #3-#1. This creates your first row of knots. (Your knots should begin to angle downward. If they don't, you may be pulling your knots too tight. Practice makes perfect!) 5. You will now repeat this knot on the right side using cords #6-#8. Your holding cord will remain cord #5. 6. You have completed your first row of knots! Continue making two more rows of Double Half Hitch Knots. (Explore how using different cords as your Holding Cord creates a new knot pattern. What happens when you use cord #2 as a holding and make Double Half Hitch Knots on the left and right?) 7. You may choose to create more than 3 rows. That's great!! When you get to a stopping point, you will take the 4 cords in the center (#2-#5) and create a Square Knot. 8. Create two more Square Knots on either side using cords #1-#4 and #5-#8. 9. You should have a bit of cord left. I encourage you to add more knots and continue with your own pattern! You can trim and leave it as is or make a Gathering Knot with a colorful piece of yarn or another piece of your cord. 10. Trim and comb out the ends if you wish. Congrats! You did it! Now you have learned 3 knots to combine to make other types of macrame hangings. Try making a piece with 8 pieces of cord instead of 4! or 16! (It is best to work with a number that you can divide by 4. Most knots will use a group of 2 or group of 4 cords.) Happy Making!!

Take your chosen colored cord (6"-8") and fold an end like pic #1. (This is a great not to finish pieces or secure a large group of cords in a hanging piece.) Using one hand to hold the cord, take your other and begin wrapping the cord with the longer end. Make sure that you can see the loose end and the loop. When you have reached the end, thread the remainder through the loop you made in step one. Holding everything with one hand, use your other hand to pull the loose cord at the top. This will thread the loose end through and secure the knot. PULL TIGHT! Trim the ends. DONE!

Either way you lay your cord, fold it over and pull the other pieces through the loop...Pull TIGHT!

Start with the Loop to the Left and place it OVER chords 2 and 3 and UNDER cord 4.

Take cord 4 and keep it OVER cord 1 but put it UNDER 2 and 3 and through the first loop you made. Slowly pull the ends and slide your knot up the middle cords. This is a HALF SQUARE KNOT. If you continue this pattern, the knots will twist!

To make a full SQUARE KNOT, repeat these steps but this time use cord 4 and place OVER 2 and 3 and UNDER cord 1, then the opposite with cord 1, going over 4, under 2 and 3 and through the loop of 4.

To make a Double Hitch Knot, take cord 4 or the "working cord" in your right hand and hold cord 5 or the "holding cord" in your left hand. Take the working cord over, under, and through the loop. Slide this knot up to rest against the Lark's Knot. This is a Half Hitch Knot. To create a double, repeat this step. our "holding cord" will remain the same. You will create these same knots with ""working cords" 3, 2, and 1. To create the pattern on the opposite side, you will use cord 6 as the "holding cord" and begin with cord 5 as the "working cord" and create double Half Hitch Knots with working cords 5, 6, 7 and 8.
