CRA has provided a range of consultancy services at a gas processing installation in Bangladesh, including a waste management and risk audit across four sites and at the head offices in Dhaka. The audits included the identification, characterisation and quantification of hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams, the identification of existing waste disposal routes, and an assessment of the adequacy of these arrangements in relation to current Bangladeshi and accepted international standards. As part of the auditing process, an intrusive investigation was undertaken of historic drilling cuttings, which were stored in excavated pits at all four sites. This investigation involved the delineation of the depth and extent of each cuttings pit using a hand auger. Samples were also collected using the hand auger and shipped to an accredited laboratory in the UK for chemical analysis. The samples were submitted for solid and leachate analysis to allow comparison to accepted international criteria. This information was used to determine potential remedial/disposal options for the cuttings. A review of the operation of the on-site black and grey water treatment plant was undertaken to determine if the efficiency of the treatment process could be improved. This included a meeting with the designer of the system and interviews with site personnel. A review of the sites’ MSDS and COSHH recording system was undertaken, along with a review of the testing and recording procedures of the on-site laboratory. The CRA audits identified a number of potential improvements, with recommendations being made to improve site procedures to a level in line with the client’s own standards and international best practice.
